Sitarist Niladri Kumar plays Mishra Bhairavi, named for the goddess of destruction, replete with chromaticism, double-stops, and extraordinary string bends.
    Learn more about the music
Niladri Kumar is known for his expansive modern sitar style, stretching the boundaries of classical music. Trained under his father, a disciple of Ravi Shankar, he was recognised as a prodigy. He has since developed an extraordinary technical command of his instrument, complete with dextrous double stops, whispering string bends, and rapid taans [fast improvised lines]. He makes forays into film composition and is the inventor of the ‘zitar’ - a curious hybrid of electric guitar and sitar. Today he tours extensively with Zakir Hussain’s groups as well as a solo artist.
“In Harry Potter, there’s a wand choosing scene where the wand and its user need to have a connect. The sitar too broadly works in a similar style. Only after the instrument and the artiste warm up to each other, the musical spark begins and the magic starts to flow.” (Niladri Kumar)
Bhairavi is often described as the ‘queen of rāgas’. It takes its name from the Hindu goddess of destruction, and conjures versatile moods. To some it can evoke ‘awe, terror, and chaos’; to others ‘a pleasant sobering atmosphere of love and piety’. It is played at sunrise, or alternatively as the final piece in a concert. Understanding the raga in depth is crucial to Hindustani learning - bansuri master Rupak Kulkarni recounts the approach of his guru Hariprasad Chaurasia: “Guruji taught me Raag Bhairavi for five years. When I complained about the repetition, he said: ‘You have to practice Bhairavi until your last breath’. That is what made me realize what swarabhyas [the study of notes] means”.
It is based on the form SrgmPdnS - all swaras [notes] are komal [flattened] except Sa, Ma, and Pa, like the Western Phrygian scale or Carnatic Raga Hanumatodi. The vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes] are typically taken to be Ma and Sa. The raga commonly takes a versatile mishra (‘mixed’) form - all 12 notes are allowed, thus injecting some comparatively rare chromaticism into Hindustani music. Its flexibility is unmatched in the raga pantheon.
Recorded for Darbar on 21 Sep 2014, at London’s Southbank Centre
    -Niladri Kumar (sitar)

If a few brief minutes of Niladri aren't enough…watch his full 65-minute performance of Raag Bhimpalasi in pristine HD on the Darbar Player, along with dozens of other captivating concerts: www.darbarplayer.com/videos/nildari-kumar-pandit-shubhankar-banerjee-raag-bhimpalasi
We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

to all arguing over the variation of bhairavi: bhairavi allows artist to experiment, to add notes, and to play any 'mishr' version of it. This is the reason why there are so many variants of bhairavi which have existed as long as we can remember. Niladri did a fine job. +1.

Bhairavi is a chromatic scale. You can use all 12 notes wisely. This composition is close to sindhu Bhairavi

It was ustad Inayat Khan who started this....he was the one who claimed that the restrictions of raags should be broken so as to increase the melody of the compositiins....he was the one who used the varjit swars in compositions soo accurately that it rather increased the preciousness of that raag

Some of you are saying that he's playing Sitar like guitar. I think most of you don't know but Guitar came out of Sitar and that Guitar has a lot of chords that can be traced back to traditional Sitar notes and tuning.

He has invented zitar. Modifying sitar by attaching guitar elements inside sitar which effectively produces sound of guitar.

    • @bobaldo2339
      @bobaldo2339 5 лет назад

Did not the sitar evolve from the veena? Also I have heard it said that both the sitar, and the guitar (which is really a sort of lute), have their origins in the Persian tar. But in the case of the guitar, and European lutes in general, my guess is that they came most directly from the Oud, and other middle eastern lutes. But that really is just a guess. And then there is some chance that middle eastern lutes came from even earlier Indian instruments. However, I think it more likely the other way around.

Today morning I was at The Dover Lane Music Conference's 65th Edition. This guy rocked everyone off their seats with his grandfather's Surbahar which is 150 years old. For us stupid Indians that would be more valuable than a Stradivarius violin as no can make it like they did this one. He played a number called "Pari" about fairies descending from heaven sung in marriage festivals in his grandmother's time and composed by her. Guys you have to be in Calcutta to hear Pari ( fairies in the English language) descending from up above and listen when this future
Ustad is in the right place the right time and the right ambience.

Really appreciable, and I adore/ respect the famous Dover Lane concert, but what's up with the name calling other styles of music or musical instruments? I like both, western or Indian classical, depends on my mood and taste. No one should be blamed for their likes.

When learning classical music there is a lot of form and rigidness. However, at concert, the artist is demonstrating their variations and their command both of the instrument and the raga upon which they perform.
When I read about "experts" of Indian Classical music I smile because they do not know the history of Indian Classical music and that it is a form of music that was almost killed off by invaders and was and is being resuscitated by current stock of musicians. Variations and what we deem "classic" are in some cases around 100 years old and still being recreated and advanced.
Personal preferences are not expert opinions.
If it looks good, you'll see it.
If it sounds good, you'll hear it.
If its marketed right, you'll buy it.
But... If its real... you'll feel it.
    - Kid Rock

I see comments saying that this deviates from the traditional style of Indian classical music but isn't that the whole point of music? Breaking convention is good because it keeps the music interesting. I wouldn't listen to a piece just because it's technically superior but because it is interesting to my ears.

I don't think I've ever heard sitar played this way, the first part of the alaap forgoing meend almost entirely, integration of harmonies, it's a haunting sound that I will admit perked my western ears used to only hearing that technique on guitars and such. And yet, whereas "playing a sitar like a guitar," as western beginners tend to do, sounds amateurish and flat and dead, Niladri made it glow and sparkle and loom. And then the first hints of melisma were like a ray of sunshine piercing the clouds. Absolutely marvelous.
