Brian gets it! There truly is a subconscious bias. My husband is also Caucasian of mostly Irish, English, German descent. He grew up in a predominantly white area but wasn’t raised to be prejudice. However, as a young boy he often heard ethnic stereotypes and derogatory terms used by his family. He ignorantly thought the word “colored” was not offensive nor inappropriate to use. He didn’t mean anything by it and thankfully our gracious friend who’s also a minority/African descent politely corrected him. This was in the late ‘80s in California. Yep! Hubby and I have been together ever since.🥰 I, of Asian descent can relate to misconceptions regarding ethnicity. Hate to say this but be prepared and always aware that some stupid assumptions based on so-called ‘race’ can suddenly crop-up out of nowhere. Prejudice still exists. Sometimes it’s veiled or subtle but it may also be just an innocent faux pas. Try to be gracious but it’s also perfectly fine to correct someone politely. Just be confident and don’t ever let a racist bother you.
I digress….lol…but what I meant to share was during the Trevon Martin tragedy, my husband and I were greatly divided and had opposing viewpoints. Subconsciously, he had tainted views and negative perceptions of black men in hoodies as though such attire automatically suggests a black dude is up to no good. The news media portrayed Trayvon Martin in that same disturbing and deadly stereotype therefore he was guilty and deserved his fate. So devastating and a scary thought that if any minority is dressed in a similar fashion and happens to be walking in a certain neighborhood, their life could be in danger. For many whites, it’s hard to empathize with us minorities who often have to navigate around such issues. Over the years, my husband finally learned to recognize covert prejudice and discrimination. He concedes that I am not being too hypersensitive. Prejudice and racism still remains in some people’s hearts.
On a positive note, there is now more diversity! Always love and protect one another. God bless your marriage and beautiful families.❤😇

Thank you so much for this episode. I truly enjoyed and connected with it on so many levels. I am an African American woman and my husband is Irish English American. We have been together for almost 48 years and married for 43. We also met at 19 while in Junior College. It was my 2nd interethnic relationship and his first. We have two sons ages 41 and 39 and we also taught them they don’t have to deny one side just to fit in. One son definitely looks mixed while the other son get mistaken for Hispanic. Thank you again for this podcast it was deep, informative and insightful. ❤️💙🩵🩵

What an AWESOME conversation this is!!! I love it! And i agree with conversation regarding "men." A man is man first. Its about the upbringing and how they respect morals....regardless of race. Pray for a "good" man/woman who loves you, respects you, cares for you deeply and considers your feelings and who can listen to you with patience. It all goes well in a relationship when he/she has the qualities. And he/she is a good forgiver!😉

The two of you have something truly special going on with the Cool Conversations. It was a great topic and it was nice to see the honest, sincere comments by the Coles and your family. It's sad how people can sometimes judge and make insidious comments but it seems like all are prepared to answer the tough questions. I love the part of the Cole family when they had the deep discussion after the Trayvon Martin death. You really have to dig deep and understand what you are embracing when you date inter-ethnic. I love Mariyah comment about marrying someone who loves you for who you are not the color of your skin. Loved this conversation. The world needs to hear it. I subscribed to The Coles. They are also an awesome couple. Thank you Gerber family.👏👏👏👏

Such a necessary conversation to have and then develop and evolve. How do we as interracial/multi-ethnic couples find ways to put our "words" into action appropriately on both sides of the spectrum? It's probably something we don't even think is possible, and then when we do we have no outlets readily available.

    Nice to meet The Coles!❤
This is a beautiful thing to be happening now.
    This conversation is phenomenal.
For the record, I was raised by an interracial couple. My mother is Black and my step-father (RIP, PapaSmurf!) was Caucasian (English/Irish/German). So, there was a lot of teaching and learning in my household.
I, too, have had co-workers say to me, I should paint my face black over something that was equally available to all staff members.
They found out because one of them was attempting to give me a piece of work for the time I'd be out and I decline the work stating I'd out of the office.
They didn't bother to investigate how I was able to do take advantage of this, they assumed I took advantage of and was getting some special, preferential dispensation because of my race.
I told them it was inappropriate immediately, and took my grievance to HR, who then tried to gaslight me.
However, I was determined and wanted it documented for my protection and posterity.
The ignorance is real and too often people misunderstand the dynamics of two people being together from two different racial identifies.
On a lighter note, men, if you're watching this, Brian has provided you with the cheat sheet to winning over that special someone!😂
We've seen Peter do his thing too. So, they're no more excuses.😂

I'm sure we will discus those idea and topics with our (Peter's) Family when we get together. I am myself curious if our conversation will take difensive turn or not; especially with the Seniors and the older generation.

    • @eventhorizon7163

The word ‘interracial’ is a misnomer. Our One and True Almighty God created just one HUMAN race with many different ethnicities. We are all one race, one blood.
It’s more accurate to use descriptions such as inter-ethnic, multiethnic, intercultural or multicultural. These two couples are beautiful.🥰
