Folks use these with dogs too. Greyhounds, Whippets, etc....any sort of sight hound, or dog that has strong prey drive. They will often set up turnbuckles to change the direction of the lure, as well. Cheers from N. FL.
Enjoyed the video, Ben! I love to see hawks trying to figure things out and laughed right along with you when Sundance ignored the lure and flew into a tree. LOL Ours would do the same, I'm sure.
I was LITERALLY going to ask for a video about this. I've been interested in starting my hawk on one of these because I haven't had any success with him yet on catching what I've kicked up for him and I think he needs to work on his muscles. Thank you so much for sharing!
About to watch this video! But before I forget, Ben could you do a video on rough legged hawks? I’ve always thought they were the most beautiful buteos, and I recall you mentioning you had flown one once (no pressure I know life is crazy, please take care of yourself 😉)
Very cool to see this! As an (technically since the UK has no apprenticeship system) apprentice falconer, I see lots of people use one of these in online spaces and around the community. Such a cool tool, great for setting good habits in place and keeping birds fit. One piece of advice I've heard is that you shouldn't rely too heavily on it in the early stages of training before a bird is entered because they know it's not real prey and they know it's easier to catch too, birds can get lurebound to it very easily and refuse slips on prey, especially smarter birds like HHs and eagles. Not advice from experience so take it with a grain of salt!
Hey Ben, love your videos they have helped me so much over the years and still currently. Any way I can donate to help towards a new camera? Let me know thanks
Ben. Always looking forward to your new video. First of all, I am sorry about your camera. Sound and video is very good with recording on your phone. Let me share what I use instead of a lure machine, traxxas slash, a remote controlled car I dressed as a rabbit with the rabbit pelt. Advantages are it can make turns and no lines to deal with…
If you get some sticks and strategically stick em in the ground and set the line of the lure round em when you turn the lure on the lure will sharply change course around the sticks simulating what a prey item might do in the field and it will give your bird more of a challenge
Had to watch several times just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Why on earth would you put the hawk on your knee hooded without a leash through its Jesse’s. 😮and don’t tell me the hawk wouldn’t go anywhere. I’ve seen a falcon flying round hooded cause it’s dumb arse handler trusted it to go nowhere while he put its telemetry on while it was sat on the block. Luckily it ended well for the falcon.
I really liked this video too. Gave me some direction with my machine.

I love this idea! A long lure drag line. Fantastic

Super incredible
Great & informative video as usual. Thank you very much.
Hello. Nice video. Wish it was longer. Thanks.

I've always been curious, how do falconers prepare a passage bird for release?
Hi Ben, who is the manufacture of the coursing lure and where did Kevin get it?
Ben, are you a hang glider pilot ???
I use too. Transcendent knowledge you share with us. Thanks

Are there bonelli eagles in US if so try them out a lots of fun to fly them
Also do u use gps or telemetry on sundance he is very good bonded with u he flys into trees and comes back
In your other video you said Sundance comes to you as a trained and experienced hunting bird. Why was he not more agressi ve with the lure? It's size?
Definitely its size.
Love this as a training tool, but definitely not as a replacement for actually getting the bird out in the field.
you could make your lure using a skinned rabbit cant get anymore like a rabbit than a rabbit
That's exactly what I do. It costs around 10 dollars for the hide.
I train a dog with an RC car covered in a rabbit skin.
I exercise both my passage Goshawk and passage Harris using a Traxxas 4x4
