I have been lucky to live near a spot that Merlins roost at night. This is in South Central Kansas. The past 5 years from October to April I can go see 2-4 Merlins every evening. They like to show up at sunset in the dying light of day. They are the richardsoni subspecies, females prefer the top of telephone pole and males prefer the wire. I can post more of my observations if requested.
