My precious Christian, Blue Ridge mountain born and bred grandmother lived to be 102. She was loved by all. This song was played at her funeral and there was not a dry eye after it played, certainly not in mine. I wish for this to be played at my funeral. At that time, I will be with "home" with both my precious Grandma and Momma, and my Father who I do not remember. He passed away when I was 13 months old. . As I listen to it to this day, it makes me cry, but in a good way. It unites me with them all for just a few moments in time until it is my turn for my Savior to call me home.

My great grand father wrote this song. His name was W.E. Sallings of Luttrell, Tn. Burl Ives stole this song while traveling threw this area looking for hill songs. There was a lawsuit and Papaw won. No royalitys were ever given for this song. All hymnals show that it was written by him. Thank you Papaw Sallings for leaving us such a beautiful song to remember you by.

I love this song. My dad was a opera singer turned Minister of Music and no one can sing this song like my dad. He was a Bass Baritone and loved the Black Spirituals because he said they have a sincere honesty and love comes out of them to Christ.

What I want to hear is Emmylou and Trace Adkins to do this as a duet. This was my dad's favorite song. Emmylou's version, this version, was his favorite. I love Trace Adkins version as well and would love to hear them do it together. I don't have a single favorite song but this one ranks very high on my list of favorites.

Though it may take a century or more for them to come together, some songs are simply written for a certain voice, and some voices are simply born to sing those songs. That is certainly what happened in this case. No one has ever done this song better, and only the Hot Band can weave the mandolin, guitar, fiddle and dobro together to punctuate this old bluegrass gospel so well. This is an absolutely superb combination of song, voice and musicians.

I think people should definatly be allowed to sing whatever they like, I think that what Derek means is that this versions is JUST SO GOOD. I've listened to Ed's for me its alright but this is the version I keep coming back to, and thats nothing against Ed or people who like his version better, in fact I am glad he did the song so that more people can here this wonderful Appalachian classic

This is pitched lower than it was originally recorded, and I find it jarring. It's in E flat minor on the original recording, as well as sheet music one can purchase of Emmylou's version. Every other Emmylou version here on You Tube is in E flat minor. Something is off here.
