Muslim populations always felt insecure among Hindus because they made inroads into Indian subcontinent through stealth, thuggery, and violence.

Honestly, I am very pessimistic about India-Pakistan relations. A happy outcome is just not possible.
We have to give it to the Professor as he is trying crazy hard on rapprochement and historical turn the clock on India Pakistsn framework and move towards what has so far been an insoluble problem.
I tend to agree with your pessimism. This attitude is based on some harsh and continuing realities: (1) for every intelligent and knowledgeable person like Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, there are literally hundreds of mullahs who spread religious hatred amongst their naive youth through religious indoctrination in thousands of madrassas and who forcibly convert non-muslims into muslims; (2) these mullahs also enjoy the overt and covert financial support of the Pakistani establishment; (3) the preceding two conditions led to the overwhelmingly dominant reality that the Pakistani masses are today hopelessly bamboozled and conditioned into becoming the ignorant masses that they are.
It will take at least 3-4 generations of indoctrination-free Pakistani youth to outgrow the embedded lies and deceptions that pass for Pakistani history today. Nonetheless, for the sake of humanity one must hope that the efforts of intellectuals like Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed will eventually prevail.

As you can note, even in Bangalore his Punjabi hosts are understandably interested in hearing about the partition. The rest of India does not care. India has moved on. Whether right or wrong in 1947, partition has turned out to be a blessing for modern India.

They remember the Direct Action when Hindus were massacred by howling Muslim mobs who turned the Hooghly red with blood. You are right. As you know, (unless you refuse) we Punjabis contributed the most for freedom of United India (today’s India, Pakistan and Bangla Desh). Out of 123 persons hanged by British for freedom, 92 were Sikhs. In addition, majority of persons exiled to undeman and Nikobar islands were my Sikh brothers. What did we get out of India’s freedom, partition of the great State and the consequences. After Independence, Punjab was at the front of sufferings from wars. None of other States of India suffered as Punjab. That is why Punjabis are interested in knowing, why they had to suffer.

@@sushmitanaik1858 Gandhiji and Nehru were actually not equally responsible. Please refer to Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed's several videos and his 3 books that emphasize this. They fought hard for India's freedom, but Jinnah the opportunist who wanted power at all costs eventually resorting to communal lines by propagating the 2-nation theory basis Hindu-Muslim incompatibility and the British supporting it to keep a buffer to prevent Stalin's communist influence from spreading to the sub-continent, resulted in the partition. Gandhiji and Nehru might have made some mistakes, but their vision for a united and secular India post-British independence was demonstrated by their intent and actions. Dear Ishtiaq Sahib:
As always your talk given in Bangalore has been a great education for all us trying to find sense, reconciliation and a happy end-game in the South Asian context. Your fact based deep understanding of the micro and macro level influences on the events of 1937 till partition and the historical pulls/pushes both pre and post partition is essential reading for us. We are grateful that you have been investing so much time in the past 2 years transmitting and explaining this information to us South Asians - both through RUclips and in person.
But I feel there is an elephant in the room which is being missed - maybe out of politeness or possibly we Indians (especially those of the Sanatan, Buddhist, Christian etc faiths) read too much into this “deeper problem”. It is the issue of perceived cultural / religious superiority of many muslims towards other faiths. It is heartening that the Nahadatul Ulama of Indonesia is working towards a structural change in Islamic attitudes and belief towards the concept of kufr, shirq and kafir. The clean-up of the Hadiths by Saudi Arabia which had earlier created the “impossibility” of modern day civilised living in diversity is again cause for cautious celebration. The supremacist mindset which over time has been whittled away amongst upper caste hindus, xenophobic Germans, White settlers in Africa etc will need to be knocked out of the heads of Pakistanis and other muslims who share this feeling. Other communities have wizened up to the unfortunate fact that despite superficial bhaichara there lurks this discordant gene - one in which the sincerity of friendship and trust between equals is hard to establish.
This will also explain why our establishment in India and people of non-Islamic faith have come to the realization that even if the Pakistanis (i.e. Muslims) do an outreach to India - both poltically and economically it will remain superficial and self-serving. While you are doing stellar work in trying to convince South Asia that we can live peacefully and respectfully if we trade and open visas for 65 year plus citizens there is 1 more thing that the Punjabi Mussalmans will need to do. That is to outlaw the concept of the kafir and to publicly acknowledge that other faiths - including Hindus are equally bonafide in the eyes of the lord.
For long we have lived with a Pakistan that had intent and capability to do harm to India. For the first time we have a situation where there is the real possibility of permanently destroying the 2 nation theory. Pakistan’s capability is weakened but the intent or “hekri” i.e. supremacism is intact though camouflaged in flowery urdu and bhaichara. There are no doubt enlightened and open-minded Pakistanis (and other muslims) who dismiss being superior to other faiths but I think a significant number will need to be recalibrated. We in India have decided to nudge Pakistan over the precipice - not because we covet an Akhand Bharat - far from it. We are going after a demerger of Pakistan into 4-5 sovereigns within an Indian sphere of influence because there is a lack of trust = both at the political level and even at the spiritual level. The smashed deities at many of our temples, conversion and present day use of shivlings as fountains to perform wuzoo etc - all still gets a nod and a wink from many in this community.
Explicit and sincere statements of religious equality and respect will need to start coming quickly from muslim quarters otherwise the rest of the world will not let itself be led down the garden path with only platitudes and vague expressions of shared humanity any longer. Ishtiaq Sahib, do shed some light on this issue which I have rather clumsily attempted to highlight.

However, India has moved ahead.
Except Indian Punjabis & few Indian Muslims, Nobody in India is bothered about Partition.
Since Bollywood is controlled by Punjabi Kapoors & Muslim Khans, Bollywood always make content in every movie about India vs Pak or Hindu vs Muslim or Hindi vs Urdu etc.
This does not mean that every Indian is thinking about 75 years old Partition.

Respected Dr. Ahmed. I beg to differ about your three point solution . Fundamental issue is the constitution of Pakistan which prevents any reform specially when Army has very special position in constitution. Unless there is constitutional amendments voted by people , these short gap measures will not resolve issues permanently. These short term measures will certainly bring piece but will not change life of people of Pakistan.

It wasn't partition of just religion.
It was partition of literates and illiterates, intellectuals and stupids, wisdom and radicals, development seekers and beggers.
The ideology for creation of Pakistan was just for attention seeking by jinnah. Who had an alarming attitude when he wasn't recognised by anyone with the growing popularity of Gandhi and Nehru. He then radicalised muslim population who fell in trap so easily. Jinnah didn't choose the path of a development, he choosed to be Anti-India in every podium just to get more and more recognition.
And by then the era had arrived, era of Pakistan's fall and India's rise.

With the inspiration from Sayed Ahmed Khan, Muslim League clearly divided the Muslims and the Rest. Jinnah was nowhere to be seen back then.
Later, Gandhi's absolute surrender towards Ottoman Caliphate and support to Moplah pogrom gave sanctity to the Islamic separatism in India. Jinnah just played the game to become the Leader of Muslims in the sub-continent.

After reading so many books due to Nehru's egoism partition has been occurred and also Jinnah's blackmail of partition. Only violence part of partition had caused killing of 2 millions people including, hindus, muslims, sikhs which was only of the genocide in the world cannot be forgotten and healed. Also culprit Cyril Ratcliff without knowing the geography of India messed everything and the people who lived in west pakisthan, east pakisthan, punjab were not identified their nationality created violence and hatracy. I also like your idea, of reviving the Manmohan Singh - Pervez Musharraf approach is a good starting point. Porous borders even for people over 65 might be a hard sell until Pakistan gets her internal situation under control. The good news is that people of both countries are deeply religious, albeit in different ways, and If their prayers are sincere, Devine Providence, I think, will pave the way. Who is responsible for the Partition?
Many Indian Historians are happy& convenient to paint Jinnah as a sole villain for the Partition of India. When we dig deeper into the History, it gives more insights about those who are not interested to keep British India as one Unit and turn into Indian Union or Federation of Indian states. Amongst the Congressmen, Gandhi, Azad and Kripalani trio were the Major leaders who tried till the last minute to prevent Partition and were willing to negotiate with League. It’s also revealed that the top quartet of League - Jinnah, LAK, Kwajha Najimuddin and Nishthar were also in the mood to get settled for a Federal set up of constitution with more autonomy and power for the States.
Then where and when it’s broken and what lead to the breakdown of Negotiation? Let’s see event presided the partition.
1. World War end and Japanese Surrender - During the World War, League supported the British which had given them a strong wicket to negootiate some favours from Brits
2. The 1946 Elections where Muslim League won majority of the Muslim electorates and emerged as a Major representative to negotiate for Muslims
3. Though the Pakistan Resolution was passed in Lahore Conference, League was hoping to hold that as a better negotiating tool to clinch a better deal
4. British earlier sent Crips Mission in 1943, which was rejected by both Cong as well as League
5. Later immediately after the WW2, the Wavell Plan also faced the same fate after Congress rejecting the Proportional representation formula proposed by Lord Wavell, Viceroy of India
6. Post the war, New Govt. was elected by British, Labour Govt. with Atlee as PM. Atlee was a Proponent for Indian Independence along with Lord Irwin for more than a decade
7. Atlee sent a Cabinet Mission with Petwrick Lawrance, Crips and Alexander
Now let’s see what the Cabinet Mission did.
British were conflicted with their longstanding need for Indian unity. The desire for a united India was an outcome of both their pride in having politically unified the subcontinent and the doubts of most British authorities as to the feasibility of Pakistan. This desire for Indian unity was symbolized by the Cabinet Mission, which arrived in New Delhi on 24 March 1946 in which the subject was the formation of a post-independent India. The Mission members also favoured India's unity for strategic reasons despite both parties, Congress and League, more unwilling than ever to reach a settlement.
The mission proposed a complicated system for India with three tiers: the provinces, provincial groupings and the centre. The centre's power was to be confined to foreign affairs, defence,, currency and communications & Strategic affairs. The provinces would keep all the other powers and were allowed to establish three groups. The plan's main characteristic was the grouping of provinces. Two groups would be constituted by the mainly-Muslim western and eastern provinces. The third group would comprise the mostly-Hindu areas in the south and the centre.
What happened then?
Through the scheme, the British expected to maintain Indian unity, as both they and Congress wanted, while also providing Jinnah the substance of Pakistan. The proposals almost satisfied Jinnah's demands; Jinnah wanted parity between Hindus and Muslims. He believed that provincial groupings could best secure this. He claimed that Muslim had the entitlement to central/union representations almost be equal to those of Hindus or slightly less equal or Jointly equal with the other minority groups viz., Christians, Sikhs and Dalits. Despite his preference for only two groups, the Muslim League welcomed & accepted the mission's proposals.
Then the ball was in Cong’s court. Its position was that the provinces should be allowed to stay out of groups if they did not want to join, in light of both NWFP and Assam being ruled by Congress governments. However, Jinnah differed and saw the grouping plan as mandatory. Another point of difference concerned the Congress position that a sovereign constituent assembly would not be bound to the plan. Jinnah insisted it be binding once the plan was accepted. Nehru, Patel, Prasad trio believed that the scheme would leave the Union govt. with no strength/Power and will be more dependent on the States for revenues.
By the end of July 1946, Nehru announced that Cong. Rejected the Cabinet Mission Proposals and the grouping plan or any attempt to make India as a Federal Entity with more Powers and autonomy for the States. By the same time, Wavell called Cong to form the govt. as they emerged as a largest party in the Hose.
Sidelined with an ignominious insult, Jinnah became distraught and called for a Direct Action which resulted in the sectarian violence between Hindus and Muslims, these eventually lead to a point if n return and ended in Partition.
Frustrated Wavell drew up a breakdown plan that provided for a gradual British exit in 6-9 months by leaving the fate of subcontinent to the Indians itself, but his plan was considered fatalistic by the Atlee & his Cabinet. After his plan was rejected by Atlee, he offered to quit and subsequently replaced by Lord Mountbatten.
Mountbatten came with a task to oversee the Indian Independence before July 1948. He was initially not much interested in this task as he was Keen to get back to his Navy career and had no interest in holding a political office. Mountbatten tried to revive the Cabinet Mission scheme by modifying that for a federal arrangement for India. But Congress leaders (Nehru, Patel, Prasad, Rajaji quartet) weren’t interested and Jinnah had developed a deep mistrust on these leaders though the pacifist group (Gandhi, Azad, Kripalani, Kidwai) within Congress was ready for a negotiation with League. With increasing communal tensions in Punjab, Bengal, Bihar, Mountbatten prepared for a quick transfer of power and advanced the Independence by almost a year for avoiding further embarrassment to the British.

IMV, by going thru the events, I think the Cong. Confrontationist group lead by Nehru, Patel, Prasad & Rajaji were never interested in ruling the whole of British India as Indian Union. May be they could have feared that it wouldn’t possible to lead and administer a Nation with 30-35% of Muslim population coupled with a strong trouble maker like Muslim League. The Pacifist group lead by Gandhi was idealistic but the confrontationist group was more pragmatic.
Partition was a British policy by which they could fragment a land mass on the basis of religious and ethnic fault lines that were used by British to create a situation of creating a basis of them getting a chance to re -enter the lives of those who sought freedom from the British crown.
The have historically done so in every Geography they ruled from Wales, Scotland, Ireland Canada Africa India the Malay Peninsula Hong Kong Argentina it was British Policy to Divide and Rule with Ethnic Racial and Religious segregated policies which left one side to favor the British and their rule and the other to despise the Subjugation of the British Empire.
Partition was Britain's way of continuing its influence on those that it once ruled. Till Modi we were a country that was under the control of the British Financial sector the Russian Military sector and the US Patent and technology sector where(Japanese and Korean control automobile and electronics China for Raw Chems and rare earth metals Germans Automation and Industrial implementation and Saudi UAE Qatar for oil and gas) all revolving around the Dollar as the reserve currency.
This Chaiwala called Modi broke the wheel as we knew it and now has bought Empires to their knees and the funny part is the world is just now realizing it.
