About this Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Memorial Day vlog:
In this episode, I’m in Ankara, Türkiye. After getting a lot of feedback from my Turkish fans, I wanted to capture the events on November 10, 2023, especially what happens at 9:05am. I started off in Kızılay, an area of Ankara and saw the incredible demonstration by the Turkish people. I was awed by their love for the Father of the Turks. It is one of my favorite travel experiences to date.
I then went to Anıtkabir, the mausolem of Atatürk. It was very crowded but well worth it. I waited over an hour to get inside of Anıtkabir and was happy that I could document the experience.
Finally, after leaving Anıtkabir, I went to the victory monument. This monument depicts Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as a World War I officer. I explained some of why he is such a beloved figure to the Turkish population.
    About Atatürk Memorial Day:
Atatürk Memorial Day, also known as Atatürk Remembrance Day, is an important day of commemoration in Türkiye, observed annually on November 10th. This day marks the anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Türkiye, who passed away in 1938. The day is marked with various ceremonies and events across Türkiye to honor Atatürk's memory and his monumental contributions to the modern Turkish state. At 9:05 AM, the exact time of Atatürk's death, a moment of silence is observed nationwide, reflecting the deep respect and reverence held for Atatürk in Türkiye. Schools, government offices, and many businesses participate in this tribute, demonstrating the enduring impact of Atatürk's legacy on Turkish society and national identity.
    About Mustafa Kemal Atatürk:
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Türkiye, was a military officer and revolutionary statesman. Born in 1881 in Salonika, then part of the Ottoman Empire, he was instrumental in shaping Türkiye into a secular, unitary republic. Atatürk's military prowess was evident during World War I, notably at Gallipoli. After the war, he led the Turkish National Movement in the Turkish War of Independence, fighting against both foreign occupying forces and the Ottoman monarchy.
In 1923, following a series of military and diplomatic victories, he established the Republic of Türkiye, becoming its first President. His presidency was marked by profound political, economic, and cultural reforms to modernize Türkiye. These included replacing the Arabic script with the Latin alphabet, promoting secular education, and adopting Western legal codes. Atatürk's policies also focused on women's rights, granting them suffrage and opportunities for greater participation in public life.
He passed away in 1938, leaving a legacy as a charismatic leader who profoundly transformed Türkiye's societal structure and its place in the world.

We, Turks are very active on social media (I don’t know why) and sometimes some foreigners make Turkish content just to get Turkish interaction. I understand them because we all have to do something to make a living but they look so fake. Your video, your reactions, your feelings were so genuine and I enjoyed watching this. Thank you so much for being so real and so respectful❤️

His genius intelligence? Really? He prohibited the alphabet, which was used over 6 centuries from one day to the another one and introduced the latin alphabet. So the new generation was not anymore able to read and understand the books and the newspapers, which written only one or a couple years ago. This is genius? On the contary. I am sure, In Norway you would name such behaviour stupid.

In a very short time, everyone learned to read and write thanks to him. Although the industrial revolution came 200 years late, it happened very quickly. There are thousands more. Türkiye fought with almost the entire world at that time. Despite this, their money was very valuable.

Atatürk has an amazing saying: "There are no hopeless times, there are hopeless people. I have never lost my hope." And when you read his books, and yes he did wrote a lot of books including a geometry book between all the wars and countless fronts he was in, you understand that all these inspiring sayings came from a very very hard place. Maybe a place that we will never be in thanks to him. And I personally try to repay him and his comrades in arms by working hard everyday. And going on the path that he light up. As a woman engineer, I am so aware that non of my rights would've been like that if it wasn't for him. He inspired me as a child, his thinking about science and rationalism moved me and I wanted to go to that path. My favorite saying that he has is: "If one day my words and science contradicts, choose science."

I don't think there is another leader in the history who has a connection with his nation in this way. 85 years after his passing away, 100 years after the declaration of the republic, there is an unbelievable bond with him, and always will. The ones with the negative comments are unfortunately are the ones who don't know him enough or sadly misjudged. I pity for them. He is a real inspiration for the world. We are over 80 million people with different ideas in a small area. He's the man who made this possible. He is the man who devoted his life to make these happen, even though he does not receive enough respect in the country he founded today. The man who laid the foundations of science and art.

He was a great leader, visionary, heroic soldier and political genius.

Instead, he gave us the republic; elevated us from the servants of the sultan to the free individuals of the republic.

Throughout my extensive 44 years of personal experiences as a Turkish individual, I find myself repeatedly moved by a profound sentiment. The luminary figure of Ataturk resonates deeply within me, not merely due to his exceptional prowess as a distinguished military strategist and leader but, notably, for his unparalleled capacity to transcend warfare. At the cessation of battles, Ataturk ascended to new heights by spearheading Turkey's trajectory towards fundamental human rights, the establishment of a secular state, advocacy for women's rights, recognition of animal welfare, the monumental transition to the Latin alphabet, the embrace of Westernization, and an expansive array of progressive initiatives.
His multifaceted persona as an extraordinary civilian, an esteemed pedagogue, and an astute statesman underscores the breadth of his influence. It is imperative to recognize that Ataturk's indelible imprint upon the Turkish nation far surpasses conventional comprehension, a realization that, regrettably, eludes even segments of the Turkish populace. His profound legacy, often underestimated or overlooked, reverberates through time as an unparalleled force that has indelibly shaped the future of the Turkish people.

I just want to add a key point about the Victory Monument. When you look at the Monument of Honor in Samsun, which is the city that Turkish war of independence began, you will see that the front two legs of the horse are raised. This actually has a symbolic meaning. Atatürk started the struggle for the republic by landing in Samsun, and that's why the horse in the monument is in motion. Later, he declared the republic in Ankara, and as a result, the horse is now at its stop position.

Ülkem şu an çok zor günler geçiriyor, gençler her geçen gün ümidini yitiriyor.

A European or American may find this all old-fashioned or militarist or authoritarian. It's easy to talk from there. People in Turkey (intelligent ones of course) love and respect Ataturk voluntarily. No force or anything else.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk dedicated his whole life to liberate a nation who was suffering from enemy occupation, wars, darkness and doomed to their destiny by a ruined empire, for a long period of time. He is not only a glorious military leader,he is also a distinguished genious and intellectual way ahead of his time.He introduced countless reforms, wrote books and articles light to way for enligthenment of Turkish Nation. As a member of Turkish Nation, our primary duty is to honor his precious legacy he left for us.Fortunately Turkish Nation is embracing him with respect and gratitude than never before.I deeply thank you for this respectful and touchy content.

At 9.05.. You were about to cry even if you were not a citizen of Turkey :) It is difficult to express this moment in words. That is a real and natural feeling that comes from inside a person. This is being done for Ataturk and there is no other example in the world like this. It is truly a great feeling for the Turkish people. And you understood this immediately. I see it from your eyes shapes after 9.05..

Thank you for sharing this video and appreciating the emotions of Turkish people on this memorial day.Atatürk was not only a great military strategist and commander but also a man who seeked peace and harmony among all people . His thoughts on science, society, secularism, education, humanity, equality, art, music , sports, nature, agriculture are of great importance and are universal. One of his famous sayings which we must all remember today is “Peace at home and peace in the world”

As a Turk, I should say that trust me this is really important for us thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in english with other people about him. Of course there are Turks saying they love him but they don't follow his lead, there are "Turks" that hate him but every of us knowing about who he really is, understanding what he did break down when we talk about him about the way we miss and need him. There is countable amount of people who met him or saw him, we didn't see him with our eyes, we didn't meet but we miss him. That is such an incredible feeling and it is too hard to explain. This means a lot dude thank you.
"Peace at home, peace in the world"

I am a 35 years old Turkish citizen. Every day I live more and more aware of ATATÜRK’s legacy to us. Every year when the clock strikes 09.05 on November 10, our hearts are crushed. Of course we are under no obligation to do so. But when we think of what this great man has brought to his people, we consider it a debt to respect him. He will always live and be remembered in our hearts and the hearts of the next generation. We miss him very much 😞😞😞

You got chills and I got tears. Thank you for being there for us and thank you for sharing with us. Have you ever seen anything like that anywhere around the world? Nobody tells us to do this, we do it by heart ourselves every year since 1938. And we will be doing it until the end of the universe. About the rain, one sentence a high school student wrote on 10 November 1938, "Today the entire country got wet without rain."
