  • This episode, I review a travel-exclusive expression from Glenmorangie: The Accord. A 12 year old Highland Scotch that has been aged in both Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks. I bought this in Larnaca, Cyprus after over a month without whisky while traveling in Egypt, but I have some strong opinions about it.

    Hi Ya Kevin !
Glad to see you back on my notification board and drinking whiskey !
To answer your question I would have enjoyed a review of the Red and Black just for the experience alone. My guess would be that it was not going to be the greatest. When possible try and review some local bottles . I'm stuck here in the north woods of Wisconsin , snow falling outside, and wishing I was in Cyprus ! Be safe in your travels until the next review.

Hi Curtis! Thanks, it's good to be back. We were so busy in Egypt and I just didn't feel like hunting down a liquor store. But I should have (Judy was encouraging me to do it as well). I'm hoping that taught me a lesson.
From the reviews I read… I didn't miss out. None were kind. Stay safe and warm in Wisconsin. We were sweating here walking on the shoreline of the Mediterranean Sea in Paphos. I highly recommend visiting Cyprus if you get a chance. Cheers!

Thanks for your review. I appreciate your candor and taste in whiskies. There are some duty free whiskies I would recommend. The 1 liter bottle of any Kavalan solist I would highly recommend. Thankfully they are exactly the same as the 700 ml solist bottles ( single cask so they vary in stupendousness ). I was fortunate enough to buy a few locally in Taiwan, where I live, because these duty free marketed bottles were not selling well in the airports. Sadly, there are no more to be had now. 😢

Great to see you back! Is there a chance that your palate had shifted a bit since you were on the wagon for a month? I hadn’t had a good dram in a while and poured my favorite, and it seemed a little off.
So yes - I’d love to see a review if something you know and love, just to see if anything had changed.

Thanks, Lucas. It's been a while since I've tasted the Lasanta, but I don't care for it. I think it's just the choice of Sherry casks that Glenmorangie chooses to use. Their port cask game is on target though with the Quinta Ruban. Cheers!

Thanks, Timothy! I'm in Scotland for a month, so I'm going to try more of the lesser known expressions and distilleries. Glenmorangie has gone pretty corporate as of late. Cheers!

Hi Keith, I do agree. I've always wanted to have more space behind me while recording, but my San Francisco apartment wasn't very big and I had to make due with the slice of our bedroom for my studio. Now I have to really get creative with every Airbnb we're in. Each one in every country and city is different and so is the natural lighting. I don't have my big key light anymore, so I have to rely mostly on sunlight bouncing in from the window.
      Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment, Adil. I started loving the Quinta Ruban back when it was a 12 year old release and I think it was a tad better. I'll still buy Glenmorangie expressions, but not this bottle. Cheers!

A bit late to this, but…
I don’t really like this either - especially for the price.
The taste just doesn’t live up to to what it should be. I told myself I would not buy this again. You can get one and a half bottles of cheaper whiskey with a lot better nose and pallets. I prefer the regular 10 year Glenmorangie over this and is almost half the price.
Or… your could spend another $20 and get any number of great single malts that will make you think, “that was money well spent “
This was not great - it was a disappointment.
However, if you have already bought it ( like me) then I highly recommend adding a little water. For a regular gram of whiskey, I am only adding 1/2 to 1/4 a teaspoon of water. ( I do take few sips straight to see if I can get any more out of it). Those few drops of water will change the experience. Wait 3 to five minutes and the nose is quite different; wait another 5 minutes on top of that, and the spice notes subside and the sweeter, sherry, vanilla, marzipan notes really come out. The nosing is WAY better.
And the taste is a lot nicer.
I was just trying to finish it and put the bad experience behind me, but adding a few drops of water - slowing down again and enjoying it a lot more.
    Summary- don’t buy it.
But if you have, add a few drops of water and give it a breath ( don’t swish it all around - just roll it and settle)
Don’t add ice - doesn’t do anything for it in my opinion.

I think I tried water in it… it's been so long and my brain cells have diminished so much. 😅
Thanks for watching and commenting. It's good to know what others think of these expressions that don't always hit me right. It's always possible that I'm simply holding the bottle wrong (Apple iPhone 4 joke) or my palate is simply misaligned with the flavors. The latter is always possible. Cheers!

I preffer Honda Accord. Good car. Problem is cant dtink it 😅. Not my cup of tea but someone rate it: just another mediocre whisky not worth buying. Nice nose and flat palate. Did you detected Mezcal in aroma? Someone else says that. 🤔 hope you enjoy it 😁🥂🙋🏻‍♂️

    • @WhiskyRiffs
      @WhiskyRiffs  Год назад +1

😂 I certainly can't recommend drinking a Honda. I honestly don't know the Mezcal nose notes, so I couldn't tell you. I do have two more bottles to review in Cyprus and the local whisky shop is pretty amazing, so I may be in trouble of going over my budget here. ;)

@@WhiskyRiffs Cyprus is a lovely place, been in Paphos many years ago before my whisky journey started. Do wee research and choose better bottle and save some money for local alcohol. Wines are superb and remember liquer: Komandaria or something like that quite nice. P.S. Mezcal is smoky so is easy to find it in GM 😁🥂🙋🏻‍♂️

As an Egyptian, I confirm, never buy whisky from local market. They are all fake and unlicensed. We used to get whisky from Duty Free. Otherwise, it is taxes 400% in hotels. Egypt’s local market for alcohol is only good for wine and beer.
