Searching For New York City's Sunken Atlantis: Hog Island
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 май 2021
- Hog Island exists in New York City lore. It was a beachfront south of Rockaway Beach and it was visited frequently by New Yorkers from the 1830s to the 1920's. It was heavily damaged by a hurricane in 1893 and by the 1920's it was fully engulfed by the sea. My mission is to find an artifact from Hog Island with my metal detector.

Hi, my name is Merrill Kazanjian. New York City is an amazing place to go metal detecting. We have lots of parks, colonial history and great beaches for beach detecting. I have gone to all five boroughs of New York City To Metal Detect and beyond. I also currently own 16 metal detectors. I want to have the best and I want to help you choose the best as well. I am a treasure hunter. So in addition to metal detecting, I go mudlarking at sites such as Dead Horse Bay. Think of mudlarking as metal detecting without a metal detector.

My most important series is called Becoming A Millionaire Metal Detecting. I am trying to monetize my favorite hobby in order to do it more in the future. In other words, we put the clad we find in the ground, affiliate earnings, and merchandise earnings in to the stock market and we invest it. This show started in January 2019.

I think it’s a small change purse frame(1/2). The middle had a clasp and the end holes were for the hinge!
Agree
agreed
Yep
Absolutely
Yes!!! As a child i destroyed many lol ...
That odd curved piece of brass that seems to have a flange of sorts looks to be a purse frame. It was designed to sandwich a piece of fabric or mesh in between the wraparound metal frame.
And the round thing with a raised horizontal bar across it is actually an old stove knob. I’m sure if you try to visualize what old stove knobs/handles looked like you’d recognize it.
Thank you
I thought stove knob but there’s a hole in it at the end...
MonCherry13 Ohhhh I missed that spot? The thing was pretty grimy. Well, there are other opinions floating around in this thread. Someone else suggested the stove knob and I guess I was influenced by it. Hey! Sounds good to me! 😂. Well, so much for that. If not a knob then I don’t know what? Oh well. We’ll find out sooner or later. Thanks!

Merrill, just finished watching this video. Very interesting. Good job researching and learning the history. AND...I appreciate you posting this even though you only found one older coin, the 20's Wheatie. People need to see it's not a home run or grand slam out every time.
You forgot your pinpointer. NO, not you! LOL. I see you have a Garrett pouch and waist bag. Slide your pin pointer holder on to that, get a little caribeaner clip & a little bungy, and attach it. You'll never forget it, or leave it behind or lose it!!! AND... as soon as I get home from detecting, I plug my Nox in, so it's ALWAYS ready to go for the next adventure!!!!
Take care buddy, can't wait till you make it down here to the west coast of Florida!

25:40 is something modern. There’s a flared threaded fitting on it. Think HVAC, car brakes etc. maybe part of a diaphragm valve.
The water valve thing may be a thermostat of some kind. Round part is bi metal that opens or closes based on temp. The lead ball is a fishinf weight. The line goes into the slit and the ball is crimped down to hold position. Loved the history lesson Good stuff!
Liking your weaving in of the local history of your hunting grounds
Dang Merrill, Thanks for the history lesson. So glad you tell the stories of NY. Awesome job ! Love the vids. Keep them coming.
Interesting old finds. 21:42 looks like 1/2 the frame from a coin purse , 35:25 looks like the latch off a diary . You never know what you will find on the beach .
So true!
Hi Merrill you put an amazing amount of effort into these videos , they are very captivating and educational and fun to watch, I wish someone could do that for Canada. All the best Harry
Merrill, I love the way you look for old historic sites and head out for some fun detecting. You just never know what the next target will be. The possibilities are endless, and that makes it so exciting. And, thanks for taking us along.
Thank you Harry!
I know you’re a school teacher, I hated school I never listened, For some reason I listen to you it just makes sense?!?You’re a very good speaker and you’re knowledgeable. You have a slow way soothing way of explaining things, methodical way of interpreting history or step-by-step .I don’t know I just get it when you talk soaking it all in. I’m 47
The "pistol ball" with the split in it is actually a sinker that you attach to your fishing line by opening it and putting the line inside and then squeezing it back on. They're made of led. :) The golden object in the beginning looks like the opening/closing part of an old leather money purse to me, and you found one half of it. That's my best guess on that one anyway! :)
Back in 1996 there was a big cut 3-5 feet in the Wainwright beach section.....Army engineers dredged sand in to fill the barren beach......we were finding old silver, buttons and personal items all over the wet and dry sand areas....give me a call if you want more details
30:36 is a split shot fishing weight
the clasp mechanism for the clutch purse most people seem to get. The thing with the "head" is a gas fitting for a stove or something. The "bell" (lol) is a split shot fishing weight. Love the history lessons being from NY myself.
I also thought that looked like a gas fitting of some sort , and also wright on the sinker .
Top part of a vintage change purse.
That thing at 26:00 is a caster wheel from the bottom of an office chair or cabinet, missing the wheel itself, but the 'axle' is still there.
Wow!
20:50 The mushroom hole coin may be scrip from a mining or logging company town. Large mining companies punched the scrip with shapes to identify which company town/store the scrip was issued in. That could put it in the Hog Island era.
Merrill, nice history background and video. I enjoy finding relics and old items around home sites. You never know what you'll find or what story is behind the find. Thanks, man, and Keep Digging.
I think the copper kind of c shape thing is half of a leather change purse clasp I'm pretty sure that's what it is, the square deal looks like a pipe fitting on one end I'm pretty sure that's a fuel pump off a small engine anyway that's my best guess
25:50 a thermostat would be my best guess. 👍🏽
The brass piece looks like one side of a hinged change purse
The ball with the split is a lead weight for fishing.
Noted! Thank you
Good start..keep going out there!
Great video enjoyed learning the history of the place !
Item at 22 mins was potentially a purse bar frame
Great video Merrill, I always love learning new things about NYC.
Thank you Anthony
Really interesting hunt - thanks Merrill!
Wild guess that the ridged tube you showed with the copper bead may be what is left of a lipstick tube.
Wow!
Awesome job Merrill!! Interesting lil history lesson there👍👍
Lisa I saw your comment last time about the break in and theft of your detector. I’m so sorry to hear about that. I’m happy to help you fundraise if need be.
Lived on beach Edgemere 36th street after storm find pieces of cups and plates..
That was a really interesting video. You used the word decimated to describe the destruction of Hog Island. In this context decimated means a large percentage. Hog Island was completely swept away. I don't really give a crap just trying to make it onto a Barry video. Roelf the word Barry. Seriously though, I loved it. Thanks Merrill.
Wow that is a fascinating point. I never made the connection that the word decimal is in the word decimated!
Big object at 25 min looks like a car thermostat to me. Very old one probably.
Great History lesson on Hog Island.
great story of hog island.. i think the brass piece you thought was the edge of a table is a tip edge guard to the end of a ceiling fan blade.
Meryl, that is a pressure gauge. Usually made of copper or brass.
Thank you for the ID Bryan!
Beads are bits off of swivels, and I'm guessing the U shaped brass bit is part of a coin purse.
It's a split shot, another fishing thingy!
Noted thank you!
I think it's part of a change purse for sure
Brass buckle at end from ol timey bathing suit or swim cap
Oh wow! Thank you for the ID
The thing with 4 corners and a gasket on it is probably a pressure gauge, you would have screwed the gage on the top of it. The small round object with a split in it is a split shot fishing weight.
Definitely a purse frame Merrill, l have some( modern but similarly made) to make Victorian style beaded bags.
Thank you Heather
The tiny ball with the split is a split shot used for fishing. You crimp it on the line or bite it. They are lead
That lead thing, looks like a devil food can pull tab...just saying... 💰 👑 🔨
Electric conductor on the thing you thought was a pen tip...
Split lead fishing line weight..you squeeze it onto the line :-) Great to look at history the way you do !
Great history lesson.
My family left Scotland to England due to religious persecution. Eventually left England because they lived across the street from a torpedo factory.
Hog Island barrier island, negative tide would be great to hunt there.
25.50 is the bottom part of a fuel lift pump of an engine.
Wow!!!!!
A Dram is also an old measurement for medicines etc used before grams. Ive detected Dram coins before used for weighing
30:30 is just a fishing weight that clamps onto a fishing line
22:48 = half a coin purse?
30:50 = split shot fishing sinker.
35:30 = suitcase or briefcase latch?
30:40 is a used modern fishing weight that fell off a line after being closed around it. Sorry!
Yep. Called a split-shot
the goldlike object is from a purse. should be 2 with a fabric or leather bag
Thank you for the ID!
Unidentifiable circle could be a workers tag or some sort of tag.
A hinge of some sort, definitely
Hey mer thinkin tin piece remind me of led sodder used on old tin cans
Hmmm
I've always wanted to work over a beach.
The little bit about your family origins was interesting. I know that this may be stereotyping, but I thought you were Italian. Good content sir. 👍
That mystery piece looks like it could be part of a tie clasp.
The brass piece looks like part of a coin purse
30:53. Split shot sinker
Looks like copper thing is a thermostat from older vehicle
Wow! There are all sorts of answers on that one! Thank you for the id!
Amazing, this is some serious detecting ✌️respect 😂😂 dead end
May have only found one Wheatie but boy you did find several older relic items ☺️
That is a grease fitting so my guess it came off a fishing boat and old one that should attach to the winch that brings him the ropes to Halt the fishing
Very interesting finds... Hope you find a gold coin😊😊😊😊
Looks like a check valve with a 3/8" brass fitting.
The gold colored piece you found looks like the top of a womans clutch purse, there would have been another one and the holes at the end is where it would hinge.
Small jewelry piece looks like a pocket watch dial
Item before the bullet looks like an old gas stove control knob used for turning up and down the flames on an old gas stove. Maybe.
Pen clip, coin purse clasp, thermostat
The large copper peice looks like a carburetor float bowl
That looks like a very old radiator cap.
🎶
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the rains came tumbling down
The rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
And the house on the sand went crash
Fun History Hunt
Gas cap and terminal cable that holds wires, glass - olde lens, brick early 1940s
Possible part from an old diary hinge hasp 35:25
Thank you for the ID!
Pistol ball is definitely a sinker, from the fishing era
Agree
Same .
Looks like a old vehicle thermostat and housing or other motorized type machinery that needs the heat of the water regulated through a radiator.
At the point were you start finding old stuff the long thin tin thing might be a collar stay.
Where is the guy with the mustache 😂, he is very funny, thanks!.
The lead with a split is called a split shot
Maybe a vacuum controlled valve or switch on the thing with 4 bolt holes.
Good luck finding what you’re looking for :-)
22.40 it's the top of a coin purse
The tin thing reminds me of a feather pendant, but I'm not sure
Large copper item. 3/8 th flair fitting on a pressure sensor.
Spring looking object. Sheathing from a phone cable
22:15 coin or cigarette purse frame
Muffler bearing and blinker fluid😆
Thanks buddy for all your adventures.I miss your rap tunes. Please take this title and write and sing to this . There will be time enough for cleaning when the digging done.
2nd thing, maybe a conductor of some kind
Do you think the 15 coil is worth the investment?
Tin soldier from the seam of a can.
That's a pot from an old change price that opening part in the middle that's where the class comes through and then you turn it
Propeller of a model airplane maybe?
The thing on 21:40 is an old bag frame.
Change purse frame and caster
3rd , earing back maybe?
Copper piece almost looks like a wheel castor
Round object, olde transit token
