Having been inside U-505 and modern subs, I appreciate how claustrophobic these scenes are and the amazing cinematography from one compartment to another. Also, the ship modeling and effects nearly 40 years later is timeless. You can’t duplicate it with CGI.

I had a wander about one in missouri, I could have stayed there all day, other half wasn't as fascinated. Had a wander many years back in a proper U-boat...... fascinating, dad and me were spellbound as he was a car mech, me an angry pixie wrestler.
We loved every inch of the sub...
But this..... fuck academy award. Oscar level or higher, This is how you make a war film

Something folks need to understand here - They weren't eager to attack a convoy for the sake of any victory, or the war effort. They were eager to get rid of their torpedoes, so they could get home.

I've seen video of Germany's Type 212A boats; if memory serves she has of course massive battery storage but also a hydrogen fuel cell which allows good submerged speed to clear the coast. The WWII Type XXI "Electroboat" had many modern features; streamlined hull, massive battery, automated loading. If Doenitz had brought them on even one year earlier... the war might've be greatly extended. Not won but... perhaps on balance to deal with the jeep carriers.

"Sharks and little Fish" written in 1954 by Wolfgang Ott is the German side while "Warfish" in 1966 by George Girder tells the American operations in the Pacific. Vastly different opponents; different conditions. Read both for comparison. Gato class was a speed boat on the surface with 18 to 22 knots while Type VII U-boat are 17 knots... with radar the Americans could track a convoy and do an "end run"... charge ahead and lie in wait. A lot of arguments about quality of Japanese sound gear and of course the British invented ASDIC.

Brilliant series, but I do find it irritating that different versions have different translations.
Friends of mine who speak fluent German have often told me that they get a lot of words just plain wrong.
It depends on when it's broadcast or who has translated a particular batch of DVD's.

Translators into English should just check what the actors say in the English version of the soundtrack.

I saw the movie version as a kid. Actors mouths moved in German, dubbing (sound) was English, but as I was in Mexico, the subtitles were in Spanish.
I may have missed some of the subtleties...

To listen for problems with the bearings, and internal mechanisms,as they will produce unusual sounds if something is wrong. It provides a fast and easy way to locate trouble in engines, bearings, and other moving parts before too much damage is done.

Old mechanics trick, any well maintainted engine has a smooth regular sound comprised of hums and taps, which Johann as an experienced mechanic will be well accustomed to. Placing the metal rod against the engine block will transmit the running sound to his well atuned ear, and any unusual noises such as grinding, irregular or missed beats, or unfamiliar higher or lower pitched noises than usual will be signs that there is potentially a problem developing in the engine.

I've done that on my favorite 6 cylinders for lifter noise... diagnostics years ago required "The Force". As watch Steve McQueen in "The Sand Pebbles" where McQueen checks the lash of the main bearings with his hand on the main steam engine.. 😊

"Fangschuß" means to put something over the edge. It is a finishing shot. The term is known from hunting
