Entire Chimera Ant Arc Explained through Gungi | Hunter x Hunter

- The Gungi boardgame has a big role in the Chimera Ant Arc, but what does the Gungi match between Meruem and Komugi actually mean?
A version of this was uploaded as an entry for the Abunai! 2023 AMV competition. It didn't make it to the finals. This is that version: • Hunter x Hunter Gungi ... - Развлечения
You didn't record a word yourself and yet this is one of the best video essays on this site
A chess game can feel as real as life and death. These two shared many lifetimes of divine experiences with eachother
i hope you never think that you don't have an extremely special talent for this
Damn, thank you! :ooo
Chimera Ant is such a robust and tight bundle of themes and symbols. All these years later, the depth of it still blows my mind. Thanks for yet another wonderful tribute to one of the most resplendent and complete stories out there.
Agreed! Togashi almost never disappoints :D
I actually shed a tear. No joke. This has to be one of the best gems I've ever seen, and it kinda sucks that it's not higher on views. At first, I actually thought it was goinf to be a brief explanation, but then I was shocked by this masterpiece instead
Haha that's how I lull everyone into a false sense of security ;) No but holy shit, thank you so much! Thankful to be able to move people like this!
nice vid. I really liked the "Dont make me repeat myself / I'll repeat it as many times as needed" part and the scene with the wolf leading into the "bliss". thx!
Oh gosh yeah, I was making this and all of a sudden I saw a yt short that explained that one and I just had to find a way to incorporate it. Thank you :D
Not to say something hyperbolic, but I swear this video has changed how I view stories straight up. I like to pick up on narrative or thematic resonances in a story and this video visualizes that resonance in an evoking way. I was re-watching Kaguya-Sama after having finished reading the manga and I swear I started to get flashes of future and past scenes in my head like they show up in this video lolol
Damn, that's high praise!! Thank you so much! It's hard to look at stories that way and even harder to write them o.o But I'm very humbled to hear that this had such an effect on you! Thanks :D
Holy crap dude you are so amazing I always thought that gungi was just to show the relationship of meruem and komugi but it actually had some lore oh my goodness you are so amazing with your editing skills
Thank you so much :D always glad to be able to enrich someone's world c:
This needs to blow up
It is slowly I’m happy to say :)
That was amazing, incredible how you managed to reframe this arc through the lens of gungi so well.
Thank you! :D
First, so that nobody has to do this.
First reply? Jk cool edits
This is an amazing summary of the arc! I especially loved how at the end you showed the chinese characters and that they differ only by human / insect radicals! Overlaying the last conversation between Meruem and Komugi over that was insane, loved the execution of the video. This should blow up more for real.
Thank you so much :D the whole Chinese character part really felt like the embodiment of what the arc was about, so for me there was no other place where that could to go, but the end :b
I cried so hard at the end of this arc years ago and I never fully understood why at the time. Now having watched this, I finally get it! Thank you!!!
Awww thank you su much 🙏
Ooooh my God!!!! What the F?????....this is PERFECT!!!! Thank you so much!! You brought that HxH thrill to me I missed it so much..really thank you!!!
No problem :D :D thank you for liking it!
Came from reddit, this was GOOD SHIT
Thank you :D :D
I teared up while watching this.
Great stuff man.
Awww thanks man!
This is like... godly levels of editing
I am humbled!
Thanks for this incredible video man. I have gained a whole new appreciation for his incredible series.
Thank you :D the show is full of things like this :o but Togashi has made it pretty difficult to find it :D
Dougurasufilm knocks it out of the park once again! These videos are gifts. ✊🏼
Thank you!! ❤
such poetry. beautifully put together
edit: wow, I was like " this reminds me of the visual poetry in eva video" and I checked your channel and you are indeed the same person lmao
Haha wow, that’s kinda funny :b indeed, it’s the kind of video I like to make :b
I gotta watch hxh again
This was incredible, damn
didnt expect to cry wtf
You're welcome c:
I have no words. 😢
I loved the previous title, ngl but man, I still come back to this video every month. Much love, bro, and I'm going to recommend this video to everyone I can ❤
Thank you so much :D
Genuinely the best analysis I’ve ever seen of this arc. Your editing made me tear up dude.
Thank you so much! I'm honoured to hear that!
I'm crying once again after so many times for this arc :) Thank you so much for your amazing work. I knew that Gungi related to fighting strategy but it was too difficult for me to understand until this video showed up. Thanks a lottt!!!!
Aww, you’re welcome :D
Amazing. You just summed It so well. It's beautiful.
Thank you!
My mouth was agape the entire video from 1:52 and so forth, holy heck, amazing job!
Thanks :D
What a beautiful video! Thank you for this!
Amazing video. I cried a little in the end. I didn't know the japanese spelling difference between Gungi and Ant is so simbolic.
this is one of the most beautifully put together videos I've ever seen on this website. your ability to say so much without needing to add one word of explanation is so truly impressive. thank you.
Thank you! It does help that so many people have said so much on this topic. This for sure is a product of many people's research.
What makes your AMVs a step up from all others I've seen is the way they give viewers further insight and understanding for their respective series. You never ever miss.
That really is my leading mission o.o There is so much information out there that is conveyed in just someone talking over images of the anime in question. But it's way more interesting to let someone watch something and make the connection themselves. Of course with my edits I'm making the connections more obvious, but the realisation how some things were set up in the anime do come from the viewer.
And also I like people to engage with the video on a meta level. Like stop and rewind, go through things frame by frame, make them active watchers instead of passive ones.
OMG IT IS THE MOST PERFECT VIDEO I EVER SAW, you are so incredible with u work of art love it
My god who are you and where did you come from 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 this is invaluable and priceless. Thank you 🎉
The best video I've seen in recent years on Hunter and anime. Thanks for your hard work!
Thank you so much :D
This is soo amazing!!! 😭😭

Wow what the fuck that makes so much sense now amazing video
beautiful video! I miss meruem and komugi story! I wish that I could go back in time when I first saw the entire Chimera Ant Arc. have to rewatch again because of your video. feels man! I shed a tear😢
Videos that deserve more recognition😢
youtube please, recommend this video for everyone on the platform. i was looking for some irl gungi plays when i found this and im eye sweating
Duuuude what the actual hell I legit looove this and I also HATE how it hasn't blown up yet 4.4k is such a sad crime you're honestly a brilliant visionary. This was an absolute pleasure to watch it was both lovely to witness and blew my mind a lil so thank you for this ❤️
I'm still left wondering if there's any significance to the pieces used beyond marshal (king). Does spy represent Kumogi? Do they perchance move in a way that's similar to her? Also my Japanese knowledge is limited but aren't shinobis ninjas? I just finished episode 135 and I knew there had to be some symbolism in there since the writing in this story was brilliant and they allotted a substantial amount of screen time for these moves, so it just left me with this curiousity which you've most graciously fullfilled. Now all that's lingering is the names of the pieces 🫠
@@001100AAAEA The Spy definitely represents Komugi. That's what the cuts at 5:04 are about. Welfin says "Komugi" and you see the Spy chess piece (which I translated on screen for clarity ;) ). The 'spy' translation comes either from the manga source I read or the anime source I watched, not 100% sure. But the idea is that she wiggled her way into the battle and defeated his ant side and embraced his human side. Shinobi apparently literally means 'one who sneaks'. But I guess Spy could've been an Americanization to make it more clear? Not sure :o Also the part where "The Spy has done nothing this entire game and now controls the board" was taken from an earlier episode, but it's definitely linking to the fact that Komugi has been doing nothing but play board games, and all of a sudden she has taken the King's heart and basically 'defeated' him, while not having any offensive powers at all.
The names of the other pieces are also kind of interesting, but the links aren't that clear. For example there is a New Bow/New Archer used in the same episode that gives Cheetuh a a crossbow. Probably intentional, but I most of these aren't one to one, and I doubt it needs to be. Just like how Gon and Meruem have extremely similar sitting poses it isn't in our face, because we RARELY get the same camera angle of them sitting (I think that's the same in the manga). Most of these symbolic meanings aren't pushed in our face and are really kinda obfuscated. It's a little imperfect, but I guess that gives more room for more interesting interpretations.
Thanks though!! It's also hard to break through with videos XD At least my Palace Invasion in Real Time blows up every once in a while :b
@@Dougurasufilm yeah I had an inkling that she was being referred to as the spy but it just felt weird and a word that doesn't fit her innocence I guess y'know? I agree that not everything needs to be a one-to-one comparison but once again the way you've explained the spy really put things in perspective for me for the second time, I like you 🤚
@@001100AAAEA no prob :D
It was rewatching the series that I realized about this. They show you a game that it's about creating a strategy to defeat the king. It's a beautiful metaphor
it turns out oh it turns out the whole fight has been explained through gungi Your video is amazing bro, how can you understand it, I didn't even realize it myself
Well not gonna lie, when I watched it for the first time I only like... scraped the iceberg. I was like some of that could be... metaphorical. But didn't really pay that much attention to it, until I saw other videos about that. So at some point I just found as much videos about this as possible, of people finding this stuff, and some of the symbolism I realized myself (like the beginning with the heroes beating so many of the ants or Netero asking the King's name and Komugi's hesitation and then striking).
So in short, lotta research on other people's findings, adding some of my own and then in the end trying to think of a way for this all to make sense visually in one edit :)
@@Dougurasufilm
Wow remarkable
Thank you bro for helping explain other interesting things about H x H.
You research by combining everything in 1 edit is awesome and reveals another side of this anime that not everyone is aware of
Incredible.
Ohhhhh my god I'm cryingggg
4.8k views? Just fucking how? this needs 4.8 million views.
Too good!! 🎉
I couldn't believe how this masterpiece would be greater and you just did it. What a piece of art ur editing skills. NGL, you made an excellent work worthy of Grammy. Sir, absolutely flawless. This is art!
Thanks so much :D
well done
This is phenomenal. What a shame it didn't make it to the finals, let alone first place. I love your style of showcasing motifs.
It's a shame it was disqualified for not being an AMV. But I do understand that decision. Thank you!
You have amazing skills
Increible
I knew that Meruem isolating himself was parallelled with kokoriko, but there were so many foreshadowings that I didn't even pick up. thank you so much for making this, you've changed my life
Wow, changed your life even :ooo thanks :D
you have both helped me understand something i didn't and make me cry at the same time
very well done
nice
You are underrated.
Thank you :D
Masterpiece.
Thank you!
WTF this is so underrated
Thank you :D
Good editing, I don't know how it could have been done better.
Do you happen to have a video in mind about Gon-Pitou as well?
Thank you! I'm always critical of myself, so i feel like some things could've been done better. Like the first shot that compares Gon's and Meruem's sitting pose, I feel like that could've been done better, but I couldn't figure out how.
As for Gon-Pitou... no, I mean not really. I really would like to make something about Attack on Titan and how everytime Eren breaks out of a cage there's a whole new cage until he finally finds out he's in the biggest cage of them all, fate and time itself, a future that he cannot change. But they really need to finish AoT for that o.o And I need to rewatch all of it.
I think there are many levels of cages present in his life that he breaks through and I think that would be an interesting video... but we'll have to see.
@@Dougurasufilm Being critical of yourself is what allows you to make videos like these (better than other people's).
The fact that they sit the same way is interesting but I think the strange thing is the fact that Gon no longer appears before or after; it seems out of place.
Regarding Gon-Pitou, in the manga there is a scene that made me think of symbolism ie:
At the beginning of the story Gon enters the forest and the mother bear, in order to defend the cub, attacks him but Kite kills the mother bear by cutting off her head and wants to kill the cub too, but Gon intervenes and makes sure that the cub is saved (he feels sorry for him).
If Kite and Gon are considered as one person, it could be compared to Pitou, then:
the mother bear (Kite) to defend the cub (Gon) fights with Kite (Pitou), but Kite (Pitou) cuts off his head. Kite (Pitou's rational part) would like to kill Gon to defend the king but at the same time Gon (Pitou's sentimental part) is sorry.
This symbolism is strange but I like it because it originates at the beginning of the story.
However, I'm sure the one on AoT will be good too.
@@robbe1534 that sounds like not a lot to base a video on though. Also I think the similarities between Gon and Meruem are bigger. They are sitting the same way so the audience knows to compare them. Meruem for example is turning more like a person near the end while Gon descends into darkness and becomes perhaps more like an ant (or at lesat more evil and callous).
When Netero says "He's wavering" in my video he's talking about both Meruem and Gon. Meruem's change of side or change in alignment is also signaled by him beginning the story using black Gungi pieces and after his revival using white Gungi pieces (which I tried to make clear halfway the video with the piece that turns from black to white, immediately followed by a close up of Meruem using a white piece).
Anyway. I might one day come back to Hunter x Hunter, but I don't think Pitou-Gon has enough meat on the bone to make a video about.
@@Dougurasufilm I agree about the similarities between Gon and Meruem, but I still think that in the video of Komugi and Meruem are a bit out of place (Gon is stopped by Killua otherwise he would not have wavered with Komugi and Pitou).
It's also true that there isn't much about Gon and Pitou.
Honestly, I don't like AoT but maybe with your video I will appreciate it more.
@@robbe1534 what do you mean you still think? :o you started off saying you didn't know how it could've been done better? I was the one saying I wasn't completely happy with it XD
But the comparison is still relevant I think. While Gon is descending, Meruem is rising and that is a big theme of the whole arc. Who are actually the bad guys etc? I felt that parallel was important to this video.
I only have three videos liked, this is one of them.
Damn, thank you!
I think if u change title this video can go viral, refrase it in some way
Thanks for liking the video :D And hmmm okay, I'm all ears :o what do you think I should name it? :o
@@Dougurasufilm give me time, I will do a little research and came up with something for you, I will do my best
@@Dougurasufilm I promise you, I will come up with 3 suggestion, so it can make a breakthrough
@@Dougurasufilm There is so low quality content out there, that get so many views. Your's is a masterpiece and I believe more people would appreciate this work if they only saw it
@@Emir-su8ufThank you Emir! I greatly appreciate that :D
What an insane video…
It boggles my mind how one single man can come up with a story like this.
I now know why Togashi suffers from back pain… it’s because his spine got worn out by carrying this enormous brain every day
This is not even half of the symbolism in this arc :o it has many themes and arcs interwoven into one amazing, beautiful story.
Guys hxh is coming back and Togashi kept going past the 10 chapter mark he usually does. We’re going to see the dark continent and most importantly EYE get to see the zodiacs in action!
Sounds cool, you got any sources to back that up?
What means Symbol = Shinobi = Spy?
That’s the piece being played :o not the thing being said tho :b did that on purpose.
@@Dougurasufilm I didn't quite understand. I simply translated through a translator because I don't speak English very well
@@user-et8wp2wr4g The piece being placed is the 忍 piece. You can see the symbol on the piece itself. In Japanese that's called Shinobi and to english that would translate to Spy. But at the same time Welfin says "Komugi". Komugi is the spy, "defeating" the king without anyone realizing by going under the radar like a spy.
@@Dougurasufilm How interesting! Thanks for clarifying!
@@user-et8wp2wr4g No prob :D thanks for liking it :D
How Komugi was enjoing playing with such a noob?
Did you… see the show? Meruem was a genius. He mastered chess and go overnight. Besides, Komugi has never lost a Gungi match. Her whole deal is that she would kill herself if she did. So if she wins a match that doesn’t automatically mean that the person she beats wasn’t good at the game. Also Komugi literally loves the game and is mega honored to be playing against the king.
@@Dougurasufilm that supposed to be a joke
@@The1ASHAS Ah, okay. I don't get the funny, but you do you.
-(Dark Knight Lich King Arthas)-(--#CIA--)-(--#Gungi--)-
Can you explain the ending with the Japanese letters "Gungi" and "Ant" and why when you halve them it turns into "People" "Insect"?
Japanese kinda works like that. The more complicated symbols are called Kanji and are usually made from other symbols called katakana and furigana. But someone please correct me if I’m wrong. Anyway Togashi did that on purpose, to make even the words related to each other.
@@Dougurasufilm I don't remember but was that shown somewhere in the anime or manga? I mean was it displayed that the words relate to each other in that way or is that your interpretation of togashis intention?
@@BigBootyBatman It's shown in the manga in the sense that it's the Japanese symbols :b This interpretation is a wide-spread belief that I think comes from Japanese fans. This is from the unofficial Hunter x Hunter wiki:
"Gungi" is written as "軍儀", while "ant" as "蟻". The difference between the second kanji of "gungi" (儀) and that for "ant" (蟻) is the radical: in the first case it is "亻", meaning "human", while in the latter it is "虫", meaning "insect". Since the game and, consequently, its name were created by the author, it is possible that this is not a coincidence, but a subtle representation of how Meruem grew progressively closer to humans through his games with Komugi.
So whether it's the intention is up for debate, but Togashi is meticulous about a lot of things so I choose to believe that this was intended :) The animation like that was never shown in the anime, I made that myself. Just like the shot of the falling Marshall Gungi piece that changes color from black to white to show Meruem's progression when after he remembers Komugi again he starts playing with white instead of black.
@@Dougurasufilm excellent answer. Thx a bunch
