Of all of the astronauts I have had the high privilege of meeting, Captain Lovell and Pete Conrad were two of my favorites. Both men came across as being completely unaware that anybody might consider them to be heroes and Jim made you feel like you were the only person in the room when he talked to you and that you could do anything he could do. Pete was just having the time of his life and genuinely felt you should be too.
I am in awe of both of them as men and then as my astronaut heroes.

When Gemini was happening I made a Revell model of the Gemini capsule. I was really into it.
A bit later I got to go down to the Smithsonian museum where they had a space docking simulator and I could not dock without crashing (good thing I'm not an astronaut then).
Jim Lovell and the Apollo 13 crew were some seriously brave souls to get through that experience.
Bringing them back alive was an astounding feat accomplished by the ground crew. All those involved in the recovery deserve the highest recognition.

I was fortunate enough to have about 30-40 minutes with him at a corporate event and he was just so nice and answered every one of my fanboy questions. This was around the time of the Apollo 13 movie release. Incredible human being.

Was lucky enough to hear him speak at Ithaca. Great man!
