Lego Western, Pirates, Castle. So many great sets. I miss the days when LEGO was like this. It didn't matter if you got a small or big set your imagination would run wild.

I remember getting Sheriff's Lockup set in 1996. Actually, it was pretty funny/weird story. My parents bought it to me for my Birthday while we had pretty major financial problems at that time (fortunately, we came out of it several years later) - so getting such set for a Birthday was a pretty huge deal to me. Huge to the pretty weird extent - I remember bursting into cry-mode when I got this and locking myself in my room. Whole family was in shock and they initially thought that I didn't like the present. They tried talking to me, but all they heard was a loud cry. Before the birthday party was over, I was able to gather myself, went out of the room and explained to everyone that I don't think I deserve the present and that's the reason I've started crying. It was really overwhelming to me, getting something like that back then. I was very emotional kid at that time and I think this Sheriff's Lockup lego set was first "big" present I got for my Birthday up to this point. I was 7 years old so still a little, clueless guy.

I played mostly with bandits hideout. The opportunities to add lots of stuff when buying other sets not only from western or building new additional things inside the caves makes it even better. Once I used that piece that works with dynamite and made an imitation of explosions inside the mine. Man... That was fun

Man this takes me back. I was 8 years old at the time living in Colorado, and there was so much "old west" in the culture where I lived. So to me, this isn't just a LEGO theme, it's a time capsule of a very happy time in my childhood.

I have sets 8 and 7 and another set with a nativeamerican. (kp what exactly that was). I got them over 25 years ago from a British friend of my parents who used to live here in a western town in Germany.
Looking back and I know Lego is expensive, sometimes you would have wanted to build large forts and camps as well as bases for robbers/bandits and western heroes. Pity . 30 years too late.
Even with videos like this I realize that I actually liked the LEGO own brands, not like today where 80 or more% brands like Starwars Mercedes........ are there.
That actually gave Lego that touch of dreaminess, even if you knew that some game series and house brands were already based on existing brands (Operation Orient with Jonny Thunder was the Indian Jones blend).
Yes, Lego as a manufacturer of terminal building blocks is an endless topic of discussion anyway. with pros and cons.
If you ignore the prices and the partly not so good implementation ........... . Well, I had my Lego time, but today, if I had to play with clamping blocks again or have to build something, fortunately, thanks to the internet and online trading, I would buy everything from these 2 or 3 providers like cobi or bluebrixx. Lego IS, WAS, AND WILL ALWAYS BE EXPENSIVE.

I only had some small sets of this, the sherrif's office was the only structure I had. I was 11 in 1996, could not resist the urge to get some of the cowboys but was trying to stick to themes I already had stuff of.
A friend did have the town which was pretty cool, we played with that quite a bit. I think he had the wagon too.
Another friend had the whole theme I think, but I am not sure if we ever played with it. He was that one friend who'd just get everything of a new theme for his birthday from his parents.

Great pirate sets, great medieval sets, many cool space themes, and other kids who came to play at my house always wanted to play with the marina harbour. I don't think they ever made another harbour for speed boats ever again.

My personal ranking would be something like this:
    1- Fort Legoredo
    2- Bandit's hideout
    3- Sheriff's lock-up
4- Gold City Junction (3-4 are interchangeable)
    5- Covered Wagon
    6- Showdown Canyon
    7- Bandit's Wheelgun
    8- Sheriff's showdown
    9- Frontier Patrol
It's very similar to your ranking :)

The buildings have the charm of 90s sets, even if they stay basics. The minifig are great. But women miss a lot in this universe ! The tan baseplate with road is a banger. Great thing of this theme is the number of little boxes.

    • @keltondavisLEGO

You’re absolutely right about the lack of women! LEGO is only just starting to approach more equity in that regard.

    • @rovhalt6650

What would the women be doing though? As a kid I wanted soldiers to play fight with. Women can fight too technically, but its just not the same. And what other roles can they fill while playing with Lego? Not many. Let's face it, we didn't miss female legos back then, and we dont miss them today either.

If i can I’ll try to get town buildings like lockup and the bank. I really want to build a Lego city and they look very well made. Also theoretically you could place them next to modern buildings and it’s like showing the passage of time figuratively and literally

  • @Lara-Blues

I agree, however, I think Sheriff's Lock-up is much better than Fort Legoredo because it's much more balanced and due to character selection it has much more playability. It just has enough to play with, it's a 2 vs 2, having 2 bandits and 2 good guys, it includes the sheriff who's missing in the Fort, it has a horse, the gold, the large barrel and the dynamite mechanism. It's true that Fort Legoredo has many more minifigs, many more horses, one more barrel and so on. It basically has more of everything, but the fact it's just bigger doesn't make it better and doesn't add more playability. Sheriff's Lock Up has a key role in Wild West theme and can be paired with any other set without missing anything. Sheriff's Lock Up and Bandits Secret Hideout is more than enough for having a great time, or separately Sheriff's Lock Up and Gold City Junction is once again more than enough without needing any other sets around. But any other set alone would miss the Sheriff Lock Up because this set brings everything together as the Sheriff character and his office makes everything to have sense in a Western Universe 🤠
