Tympanometry (What is tympanometry?)

Tympanometry measures the movement of the eardrum in response to changes in air pressure measured by a probe placed in the ear canal. The purpose of this measurement is to determine how effectively sound is transmitted into the middle ear by checking the volume of the ear canal and the compliance or mobility of the eardrum.
Tympanometry can confirm or deny issues such as a perforated eardrum, middle ear infection, eustachian tube dysfunction, and other ear disorders.
Tympanometry cannot be performed if an ear canal is full of wax or if the ear canal cannot be completely sealed off. This valuable measurement is used in conjunction with other tests to determine the total picture of a person's auditory system.
