I’m currently following someone who is dealing with this kind of situation. Surveyors came out multiple times and marked the property line, the neighbor came out and removed the stakes on camera, not caring that they are being recorded. A fence was built past the property lines because the official property lines does not match where the woman claims it is. The fence is still up, and sounds like it’s gone to court despite the homeowners hesitances to do so (they were friends until the property line issue appeared)

For the first year or so that I was on graveyard shift, there's a not-theoretical chance that I'd make that same stupid decision if woke up by close gunshots. However, that's because working 7 days a week on graveyard shift left me mentally cooked until the mandatory overtime eased and I was able to adapt. But there's also good odds that I would have slept right through the whole thing for the same reason.
