    Hey hey! I love when you post. 🫶🏽I’m always like, “ ahhh my buddy posted a new video.”😂 Not many people on YT enjoy and appreciate literary or contemporary fiction, so I find it refreshing and insightful to watch your videos. Now you have me interested to read an Irish novel. I love that the author of the book is Autistic. It’s only right for me to check out her work now. 😊
    P.S. I love when you speak in Spanish! Even though I have no idea what you’re saying 😅🤪

      Hahahaha the yt buddies, I love that Joyce! Theres a teeny tiny cozy corner of lit fic on the 'tubes, but totally agree the norm isn't that. Which is okay! But grateful we found each other! And oooh, have you read some Rooney yet?? I'd start there (if you're wanting to do some tandem listening and watching, the Normal People adaptation is still something I watch yearly its so dang good) Though I feeeeeel like you might vibe wih Beautiful World, Where Are You a lil more! But yeah, can't go wrong with Naoise either!!

    Oo i just found a $1 copy of exciting times and it makes me that much more excited to read it. Currently reading the rachel incident-caroline o’donoghue (loving it) on audio and you’re right there’s something about the cadence, the word play, the syntax that surprises us and adds to the experience.
    This vlog makes me want, nay, need to visit nyc again 😭🍂 not even the sight of crowds dissuade me!!!

    GIRL, I am currently obsessed with contemporary Irish lit, specially on audio. The accents and their delivery are everything. You may also enjoy Close to Home, very much a Belfast story and the cadence comes through the page so well too.

      I am glad I am not on the boat alone. Truly obsesssssed! I need to read Claire Keegan, I feel like shes a miss prereq on the irish lady lit syllabus lol. And adding this to my list expeditiouslyyyyyy, thank you for the rec! Do you recommend this one on audio??

      You know, I’ve read Foster and it didn’t impact me as much as it seems to impact others, it must be a me issue but I’m curious to hear your thoughts! I will try again with Small Things Like These soon. Close to home I read on paper and enjoyed it! Prob would be great on audio but not available in my library. Just finished Conversations with Friends and I feel I am the last person on earth to read it, but what is more quintessential millennial Irish lit than Rooney 😅

      @@KatherineDVrealllllly! Thats so interesting!! But not every book is gonna be for everyone. I just got my hold in and started it on audio but dont like the narrator dude. But yeah, now Im interested to see how I feel. And UGHHHHH! I miss Rooney so much. @@katsfieldnotes Ohh man, I hate it when the narrator ruins an audiobook 😂 I should totally re-read BWWRY! Thanks for putting that in my head. I’m going through a slump so maybe more Rooney is exactly what I need.
      On an unrelated note, have you read the new Nunez? I am debating whether to splurge on the hardback but need to know if it will be worth it haha, I’ve loved everything by her except her last one 🤔

    this is really making me want to read Exciting Times -- I've been lowkey thinking of getting into some irish lit because so many people in these parts are loving the books, so it looks like I ought to add this one to the list. love yr point about cadence when hearing the books. I suspect there's a specialness in the writing that comes partially from the specific lilt of different irish cadences in english. it may be a slightly different english tempo/voice/melody even in the very writing. I'm planning to reread A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ní Ghríofa soon - I liked it a lot 2 yrs ago, and want to listen to it this time

    • @katsfieldnotes
      @katsfieldnotes  9 месяцев назад

      Definitely! Is Milkman on your radar? That one has been so beloved and my brain has been on 2% for the past month, but the language in that was wonderfullll. I'd be so curious to hear what you'd think of that one! And oooh Ive seen that one around, though I heard its quite heavy right? I just remember being scared when I heard it spoken about but I dont remember why 😂 But listening to it must be such a gratifying experience

    • @bibliosophie
      @bibliosophie 9 месяцев назад

      @@katsfieldnotes milkman's on my list, ya -- I found it on the street a while ago, and I know a lot of people love it. a ghost in the throat is pretty heavy ya, and potentially difficult if you're squeamish. really interesting to listen to though. and thirdly, it's taken me so long to reply to this that I have since actually read exciting times and liked it!

      also loved what you said about character study. a personhood is a tapestry on its own with so many happenings with so many different feelings. with this involved, and having other characters involved, it makes for great reading outside of plot-based narratives.

    • @katsfieldnotes
      @katsfieldnotes  9 месяцев назад

      I keep forgetting Murdoch is Irish too, dude! My brain always codes that book as super British and I don't know why! 😂 I think Im gonna do The Sea, The Sea in 2024 if you wanna do another lil buddy read together! Im gonna try to do one Murdoch a year
      And yeah, I think the idea of interority and isolation going hand in hand is something that Irish novels have taught me doesnt have to be the case. You can have super inner-world-y and interior books that are still interested in characters tethered to others. Idk but I dig it
