I made this recipe on sunday and it was delicious. My wife who usually doesn't like lentils loved it too. I will make that dish again it was incredible.
That really looked delicious. Love the cherry tomatoes and that lentil based soup looked really hearty.
i love her so much! her voice is so comforting and great to listen to and her directions and tips are amazing!
Garlic will go great with this, we call the preparation "Tadka" , the one you added to the dal in the end and plus if you make the consistency a little soupy instead of creamy, dal is great with Rice and Roti, it is a staple in our country
I was super stressed out just now but watching this vid has made me feel calm. This vid was so slow and peaceful ♥
Great recipe! I really love watching you and your videos ❤️
One dish looks better than the other...I have definitely to try them.all..The dhal with the roastet tomatoes is looking soo delicious💚
That looks both beatiful and delicious!! I can't wait to try it 😍
Looks delicious, thanks Shira.
Shira, I'm still in denial about the fact the you're going to be absent for a while again. Your segment is the best and the ultimate proof that healthy(ish) food can be delicious :)
Very nice recipe. Thank you for sharing. Try adding a pinch of crushed saffron to the lentils instead of the turmeric.
This looks really tasty. I hope I can find some golden beets at grocery store because I want to make this ASAP!
Wow... Look delicious really.😁 Thks..
Thank you from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Is it a good option for dinner? Is it heavy for digestion?
I love dal, especially with roti
_Yuumy and healthy_
Comfort food!
I made this for dinner tonight. Very delicious! The dal itself is very mild. Most of the flavor comes from the tomatoes, shallots, and yogurt. My kids didn't like it so I'll be able to include it in my upcoming recipe collection, "Food My Kids Won't Eat." :-D
I love Shira's recipes so much. soo healthy and nutrient packed but never boring or flavorless. i can easily veganize everything she does because its already packed with so many whole foods to begin with. Shira looks soo cute preggo!!
Shira is so impossibly healthy. I wonder how she got to be that way. I would like to be like her!!!!
Looks so good and I know I’m going to devour it , but my roommate hates tomatoes what’s something I could use instead cause I can’t imagine anything but tomatoes in there because it seems so perfect , happy to hear any ideas , from anyone , thanks !
tom hunt what about raw mango..the visual appeal wouldn't be as good as the tomato's but unripe mango in dal tastes..so very good!!
What about diced red bell pepper and a squeeze of lime juice? Those will go well with the cumin seed and shallot.
It looks like that soup was pureed or mashed. Or does that happen just from the simmering.
Red lentils break down a lot when cooked for a long time. Usually no pureeing or mashing is necessary to get that texture
yellow lentils are like that, they break down very easily, but there is always a sweet spot between firmness and completely done, if not cooked properly it is very easy to get hard lentils
Overcooked, but generally texture depends on preference.
I am an indian. Dal is our staple. Even I will also cook this. Really nice innovative recipe.
As an Indian, I agree. For once there's not a person from the food's country of origin saying "oh this isn't authentic bla bla plz learn how to cook food"
That looks amazing
I missed shira so much that it cured my fear of her utensil banging
Can u come back with more recipes?
Where can I find the golden beets? Or what can I use instead of...?
Jeekai W Farm to Table has golden beets.
Usually farmers market. The thing is, they're not always in season or available - so maybe you can to put another pepper/carrot/sweet potato/parsnip instead. They'll add a little hint of sweetness, too.
You can usually find golden beets along with the red variety at many natural food stores. Beets are surging in popularity so they are getting easier to find. I've even seen them at my local Walmart Superstore in the produce department along side the red ones.
You can buy them at whole foods
Would it taste good over a bed of rice noodles? I'm a huge fan of noodles, so I'd love to know!
Yuri Bernhardt it tastes better on plain rice
kkg _47 I see. The thing is I've eaten this variety of dal with rice my whole life, so I was just curious how it would taste if the rice were replaced with noodles.
This type of dal is my favourite, so I do enjoy it with streamed rice, but I have more of a preference for noodles. So, I'd like to learn how noodles can be incorporated into dishes like this one, which wouldn't ordinarily be served with noodles.
Yuri Bernhardt I am not sure whether the texture of noodles will be good with dal. Dal itself cannot be used as a sauce so to speak to coat the noodles.
kkg _47 I see.
I love lentils in soup/stew but hate the red variety. They are so mealy and chalky and can be overcooked really quickly. :( I much prefer the green or French variety that have a better texture.
Could you imagine how Americans would eat the hell out of this if they used it as a pizza crust dipping sauce OMG
is she in denial about messing up her tomatoe dish with burnt cumin seed or what!? why they dont cut and make her remake the coconut oil shalot and cumin seed part? its not that complicated, it take just 5 or 10 min to do it! it happen to me sometimes at home too (for example with the garlic...burnt garlic beerrkk...), but i never go on with the recipe, because obviously I do not want to waste the ingredients that come after !! i put the burn stuff in the trash, and i start again from the beginning, no big deal! its such a waste, in her case this beautiful tomatoes..and then she mix it with the superb dal that she made,,its a pity.. and dont tell me that she believe that the viewer aint gonna see that the seed are burnt, how take people for fools!
💕💕💕🤗😍💐
Yikes those cumin seeds are burnt! Please don't do that at home people! Also take the fry part and just pour it on top of the dal while it's sizzling hot.
Small tip from an Indian cook:
1. Those cumin’s are burnt and that would make the tomato dish taste funky. Cumin’s don’t taste good when burnt.
2. This is not a whole meal. Where are the carbs???
3. If you simmer those veggies for 45+mins they would just mush up and become baby food. (Actually that’s what it looks like)
Red lentils are like 68% carbs.
Lentils are carbs. Vegetables are carbs. So everything except the water and the coconut oil contains mostly carbs.
True. But I think what prisa means is that dal isn't usually eaten on it's own. It's eaten with some sort of bread or rice or other complex carb
its not a complete meal. don't try to hack indian cooking with what you know. learn from indian chefs and better off home-cooks, for a proper balanced diet. and the veggies in that would be completely mushed. this is almost baby food..
@@F9mhk as an indian they're right. Plus you can't use your vast knowledge of food to try to dismiss facts
We don't really put any vegetable in dal. Idk why you'd even call this a dal. It's not dal.
No wonder Indians abroad are teased for smelling like curry. We never eat only one thing on its own like this.
Sharon Bellenger I understand it's inspired from dal. It's not actually dal.

Pine Apple reading is fundamental :)
Your pronunciation of “Dhal” is wrong. Try making trini dishes please !
Don't get mad at people for pronouncing wrong. Some people can't pronounce things the way others can
A Dal is not a without a tadka... Hence stop calling it "Dal"... This is more of a boiled lentils with vegetable broth.. And stop mocking Indians
Sorry, you're wrong about the meaning of Dal. It means split, as in, referring to legumes that have been split into halves. Porridge? Lol. Nice meal anyway.
yeah youpi! cumin seed burnt anyone?!??
Kuch bhi? Dal means...... Hadd level ki bakar
why is she always shooting for...? Btw, that's NOT how you cook lentils
There's not 1 specific way to cook lentils
this is one pathetic dal recipe....
It was never supposed to be authentic
Are you vegetarian?
Tash Cute l am.
As for Shira - I don't think so. She cooks chicken and fish from time to time on this channel.
I am. Plus, india is like 30% vegetarian
The hair 🤢
Queenie x what's wrong with it?
