That looks amazing, but I have a silly question: what's lemon tree earth? I did try search engine-ing it first to no avail... Is it just earth from around lemon trees?! And if so, why?
Probably nothing and then they had to worry about the moisture! Just think about pre-plastic days. You had rocks. You had plant fibers. No body was going to waste cloth or animal skins on a floor. Actual clay was your answer. These days people find old tarps or billboard signs to use when building. No, plastic is not the be all, end all. Sometimes there just isn’t a better answer.
@@janiebrackett5713 there simply has to be. In this day and age when we are considering putting people on Mars, there IS a better alternative to plastic and it should be a focus of anyone who loves Earth to find it.
I really want to try this building method! Looks sooo cozy!!
It's beautiful!
Very neat, look forward to seeing hoe it holds up over the winter!
What a cool floor! :)
Wonderful project. I appreciate how each step is laid out in a nice bite-size nugget of information.
That looks smooth.
Great summary of how to make an earthen floor! It is so helpful when old technology resurfaces as new so we can learn what our ancestors used.
It will feel so nice to walk bare footed on this floor, both in summer and winter!
lets go
I ♥ yurts! This is awesome. I would love to build one of these! Thank you for this! God bless you for sharing what you know.
I need a shed like this for storing garden tools and such, just not as large.
Will moles undermine this floor? Could a layer of wire be a good idea?
I have moles in case you haven’t guessed.
❤Very cool! 🎉
Awesome, looking forward to hearing about lessons learned in the years to come. Was that an in-floor RMH that was being hinted as a future project?
well, we didn't build any in-floor stuff. I think that when the yurt is 100% done, we can explore adding a rmh.
in-floor Ronald McDonald House? Can't wait to see that
I'm floored.
If you didn't have plastic, what would be a natural substitute?
More gravel and good drainage to quickly take any surface water away from the site.
@@offgridburbia Makes sense. Thank you!

we have a site where we are preparing to plant a lemon tree.
@@paulwheaton Aha... And that site's soil has characteristics which are appropriate for the floor. Gotcha.
What can be done in place of the plastic liner? What was used traditionally?
Same. I’m trying to get rid of plastic, not add more in.

@@LitoGeorge You could go with a sheet of lead or copper, but it's over 100x the material cost, and 10x the labor to join the sheets.
If you had only typed these questions in the search bar, you might have learned something.
Why the plastic layer?
