nice work Ben, I went back and forth between using metal pipe and high pressure rated pvc. I finally went with the pvc, price was somewhat a concern but mostly the rusting factor sealed it for me. A plumber friend mentioned that even galvanized pipe will rust, flake and eventually plug up inside. If money wasn't a concern, then stainless steel or copper would be the bees' knees but alas I rather pay for excavator time than fancy pipe...
Our site is actually perfect for a RAM pump. Do you know if the water your pumping can come from a different source than the water that's running downhill? We're going to do rainwater collection and want to pump that water to a tank uphill of the house for gravity feed. The water we'd be using to create the pumping pressure is coming from a spring up high on the property that probably runs at 200 - 300 gpm during the rainy winters here in the Pacific Northwest. It runs downhill in a seasonal creek all winter and can easily fill up a 5000 gallon tank up the hill to get us through the dry summers, IF it will pump water from our rainwater collection system vs the water that's flowing down the hill... Fingers crossed!
hi Carole, you can use one source of water to pump another this type of pump is called a double acting ram pump. typically, its done when you have a non-potable source used to power the ram and a smaller amount say from an artesian spring that is used as a source and pumped as a clean drinking water. they are more complex and I haven't found anyone making them commercially, but this fellow has done his homework and has made one for himself: ruclips.net/video/22MszYsRtMI/видео.html
Ram pumps are so cool. Like magic!
0:58 "water hammers" usually destroy indoor plumbing...

Good point!
