They only take a predefined maximum current of which the battery is maximum capable of. They cut down the extra power. If a device can take a maximum charge of 1A then it won't charge fast with a 2A output from the adapter. It will just cut down any extra charge.

Dimitry4Life except you only need one port on your phone. unlike a computer in which many people plug the charger in, connect 1 or 2 external hard drives and some even a wired mouse. a laptop is more productive than a phone hence more ports are needed
+taz874 Two external hard drives on a tiny macbook at the same time? That's not what the machine is intended for, but you could with an adapter. With that said, it should have 2 USB-C ports. With the adapter, you can also plug in a screen and the charger, and it also has a USB 3.0 in it. So you can charge at the same time.
I love the idea on one port type for several applications. USB-C's biggest and best advantage is the increased power it's rated for, making it ideal for a charger cord.
Yes. Considering it's not made out if very limited resources. When the demand increases, so does the supply, which also increases competition, therefore consumer choice, innovation and all-round lower prices.
The only way I would buy the next iPhone is if they replace the lightning connector with a USB-C. And add another port so you can charge and listen to music at the same time. Unify the ports across the devices. Apple needs to stop confusing minimalism with simplicity -- we want simplicity. I dont care about having a Macbook thin enough to give me a paper cut when I open it, I would be content with the 4 USB-C ports on the new Macbook Pro and 2 USB-C ports on the next iPhone. Simple. Sorry to rant some more, but you cant even plug in the new lightning headphones to the new Macbook Pro because it doesnt have a lightning connector!
Alex Varidin you don't need two ports, the new iPhone is going to be faster, more energy efficient, and probably will have a better battery life, making it costly in both space and money for them to add two ports, and also you wouldn't need to charge and listen at the same time, also you can just by wireless headphones, that could be a solution
USB C name is for the Reversible Form Factor(The Port), it need not necessarily be 3.1(It can be 2.0. 3.1-gen 1, 3.1-gen 2 or thunderbolt). The New MacBook's Type C is 3.1-gen 1 and the Nokia N1 available Since Early January 2015 in some Asian Countries is USB 2.0. USB C is Set to Replace Literally Every Port out there on all Device including -Hard Drives, Displays, Projectors, Charger/Adapter, Printers, Notebooks, Tablets, Cell Phones, TV; -USB A, USB B, Micro USB, HDMI, Mini display, DVI, AVI all will be History. And we will just need a single Cable type & port to do it all.
SchneiderMan true. I have bought a lot of cables from china and today I am not using even one of them because they've all broken or exploded. Apple's cables are very expensive but at least they work :/
SchneiderMan Everyone is going to be making these adapters, thats the point of the USB 3.1 standard. Saying it has USBC and USB 3.1 is redundant. It was planned from the get go, thats why it supports video out.
Excited about future! Technology is improving at such a fast pace, it's really exciting. Charging with Type C and the crazy transfer speeds are mouth watering... When should we expect laptops to come with this (combined with 5th gen Intel processors)?
Type C was a revolution (and no it was not invented by Apple) there are few motherboards that used it before Apple including Asus and Nokia N1 Tablet, but on a Laptop, Apple is first, however 1 port is useless. It should have included at least 2 ports.
Z Soran I acually don't understand the shit apple gets for only having one port. It is not that an expander is so big of a deal on a laptop/ultrabook that small. You wont probally plug in more than one thing when you use it in the situations that it is meant for, like taking notes in a classroom or having it sit on your lap.
Andreas Hagström yes but in this age now we're dealing with Terabytes of data, in other words when you are transferring files between 2 storages you have to copy to your PC then to the other storage, and with an apple you can't. And the apple laptop can't handle heavy apps due to the lack of a fan and the low powered processor, up until now there is no problem, if you want to get a Laptop just for notes and those stuff you can use this Apple laptop right? NO, because it is over priced and any other ordinary tablet can do the same stuff.
USB C is great. However, Apple's USB C requires their own special dongle in many cases. Their own dongles are crap and expensive. Apple is making wrong decision after wrong decision, sad.
+Conor Henry you would think so, but many reviewers are showing that the new MacBooks are incompatible with non-Apple adapters, even though they work on all other PCs. they are locking the MBPs to their own dongles for a price grab.
@@djthedadiofficial i would think it would depend on if the cable has thunderbolt 3 capability or not. Some of them are just straight usb-c, and i can see where that would cause issues in some situations as far as compatibility. If not, then it's mostly because of Apple's damn T2 chip
because of a thing called capitalism. prices for products are set at whatever consumers are willing to pay for it. also, most of their products really aren't that expensive when compared to the competition with similar specs. and you're paying for build quality, design, etc.
Random Help That was beats headphone explained. But Apple actually do set high prices, so consumers will think it's "the best" Expensive=Good, high quality. Cheap= bad, straight from china and breaks after 2 uses. OF course they have advertised a pretty strong name for themselves so they can get away with it. Though anyone with half a mind knows this is bullcrap, but that's Apples market. They sell average phones, accessories etc for premium prices. And it's working good for them.
Iwo V Nope. People like you need to actually get out more and see that real, actual adults use macs all the time. Some people want a computer that works consistently and will pay more for it.
NYxoid How? Slower data transfer rates, non standardization. Every techy I've talked to thinks that USB-C is not only better than lightning but great for both laptops AND phones.
Nicholas Cardenas Yes thats what I mean take all the times you plug in your ac adapter and all the times you use your regular usb port and all the times you use your monitor port and add them all together that wear is being put on one port....Just something to think about but im sure they designed it with that in mind so hopefully its very durable. I have had usb ports fail due to wear of being plugged in and out.
Cranking All Day the same reason they didn't call USB-A, USB-B, USB-Mini or USB Micro USB 1, 2, 3 & 4 - they're just different form-factors, not newer standards.
The new USB-C hardware and USB 3.1 software are a HUGE improvement over existing systems. I think it is going to catch on faster than any of the past 'connector' improvements. While I do believe that it is a little bit crazy that the new MacBook only has one connector, I don't think that it is going to be all that big of a deal. I really wish Apple would have taken this chance to add a USB hub, Ethernet, and display output on the power adapter making it like a 'dock', for easy switching between desktop and mobile workflows. They could have REALLY over marketed that 'innovation' and would have been crazy useful. Oh well, at least since it is USB there will be a ton of third-party accessories for reasonable prices, maybe even what I described! Makes you wonder if Apple could be considering ditching their lightening on the phones, puts them in a bit of an awkward spot.
are people getting dumber these days? What happens if you plug multiple usb devices into your existing computer? Does it blow up? No. They work. Why would USB type c be any different? THINK BEFORE TYPING.
Will Davis You seem to be dumb.... plug in multiple devices won't charge your computer.... but try plugging in two energy cables to it and tell me what happens.
Nicolas Frasson He wasn't exactly clear in his question, makes me think he didn't understand anything about USB 3.1 I'm guessing they'll configure it to only charge from one port at a time, but I suppose it could be configured to charge faster as long as the battery can handle the current as a small sacrifice of battery longevity.

USB C is not USB 3.1. USB Type C is only the shape of the connection. Like USB Type A or Type B. There are USB 2.0 Type C ports out there but also USB 3.1 Type C ports. It depends on the device. Many cheap smartphones e.g have USB 2.0 Type C ports. USB 3.1 doesen't has to be a type C connector. Most laptops have USB 3.1 Type A connectionss and one additional USB Type C port. Type A, B or C, Mini etc are only the shape of the connection. 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 are the classification of the connection.

Yea also LG G5 , Huawei P9 and HTC 10
Damn, this was really informative as always, thank you :)
Most excellent professional explanation. I feel like I struck gold finding your video on USB-C. Thank you Marques.
me: just discovered usb type c
me: **looks at the upload date** what!? it's been here for 5 years??????
Your right, the new iPad just got USB-C.
nothing against usb-c but just 1 port is just meh.
Nah man just buy our apple exclusive LaCie macbook hub for $90, so you can add our $120 dvd burner, $200 hdd closure, $150 displayport switch, $130 Smarter iKettle (this actually exists), $180 alarmclock, $130 blood pressure meter, $80 network switch, $80 magsafe charger which gets a kinked cable easily.

eww 360p, gonna wait 10 minutes for 4k :)
i only have 1080 on my computer

i wish i could run 4K videos on att gigabit :(
MetagrossEatsSkittles i have att gigabit. i think it's cus im upstairs and the router is downstairs.
Haha, it's worth it i guess.
***** 1080p not enough, still waiting for 4k (first world problems)
So I've been using RUclips since it launched and this is my review.

MKBHD keeps RUclips alive for me. Thumbs Up!
5 years into this, and iPhone 12 is still expected to come with a lightning cable!
i think its because they want to have no ports in the future of iphones so don't want to change to usb-c for a few years and give confusing messages.
Ramon Castillo i think it is for licensing money 💰
@Aditya Bhattacharya yep and now I think they are going portless soon because of mag safe
@Aditya Bhattacharya lol
I'm kind of confused - in theory would it replace the Lightning end of an iPhone charger or the USB end?
Both; but the iPhone chassis might already be too thin for USB-C.
ah okay, thanks for explaining
+JaTo Well , maybe then Apple will use Mini USB 3.1 Type C ?
Not only can it go in either way, but you can plug either end of the cable in either side!
Did you watch the whole video? It doesnt matter if it does thanks to these things called adapters made for thos people who arent ready to upgrade.
This video is more relevant than ever now that the iPhone 15 has USB C.
I'm watching this video in 2021 and MKBHD looks... Young.
who's still having the legend itself - "MICRO USB"?
Ps4 controller enters the room
I'm coming back from the future to watch this video😊
Fast forward to year 2020,
Now everything's USB-C. Good Call MKB. 😊
Wow man! Your predictions are awesome!
Holy Jebus, $79 for an adapter!? Fuck apple.
that's what we've learned to expect from apple
Yeah, but there will be other adapters from other producer soon. So it won`t be that expensive forever.
Fuck Apple? At least with the Apple USB-C you know your devices will not blow up. Try using a "cheaper" version on your 4k Monitor at your own risk of frying it.
*****
Especially with their cables and chargers that frequently wear out with normal everyday use, mainly broken plastic on the ends.
Lou Zipping Cables and adapter stuff from Apple always have been from awful quality. Because it's a standard, and not some stupid Apple thing. expect to see adapters and cables from companies who actually know how to make such things.
So if that port somehow breaks you're essentially fucked... GG Apple, GG
+A Person well thats apple for you
+A Person You can buy here www.dx.com/p/usb-3-1-type-c-to-usb-2-0-data-sync-charging-cable-for-cellphone-white-22cm-412183?Utm_rid=16912658&Utm_source=affiliate
+A Person isn't that the same as with your phone? (albeit a slightly less expensive joke, still the same thing)
Crazy how everyone thought this was crazy but I low key love it now
Like all other developing tech it looks alien for the first hour
I usually happen on your videos by chance, but every time I do I love them. They’re concise, clear and just really well done. Keep up the great work!
I love the idea on one port type for several applications. USB-C's biggest and best advantage is the increased power it's rated for, making it ideal for a charger cord.
this guy knows his stuff..
MKB-currently not available in-HD
But yeah I've been waiting on a easy-to-understand explanation for this
Thanks
RUclips has to process the video.
Its in hd for me
***** He records his videos in 4k actually.. Just wait for it to process
I know. That's why I said "Currently not available in HD"
And I think he uses a 6K camera? Not 100% sure about that though.
Just watched it in 2k
Happy New Year 2021 MKB. Mk
Buy your adapters while theyre cheap? shouldn't they get cheaper if everyone adopts it?
good video, but this...i would imagine they'd get cheaper as it gets adopted more.
Throw out your adapters! They are soon to become obsolete.
;)
Mimey Man wow you have been brainwashed by apple😂
yes, but I don't want to.
help....me.....
***** The point I'm making is that dongles are not a solution.
lightning is smaller, I thought the whole idea was: "make ports smaller"
2020 and only now am I be recommended this video by RUclips.
Man its simply nice explanation. Who are all watching in 2022.?
✌Peace..
I thought this vid was filmed in 2021
but such good quality vid back 6 years ago omg
The only person I've ever heard say asus "a soos" is Marques. Is that the correct way?
Yes. It is pronounced "a-soos". I called corporate once and thats the way they pronounced Asus.
Yes.
I've always pronounced it "ay-sis." I guess I'm a filthy casual. Meh.
***** Thanks language for you but. Too many ways to pronounce the same set of characters
I pronounce it ISIS
im laughing at the people buying the new air and the watch.
Yes they dont respect your authority
Shut up, fat ass!
It's not an air
this new thin one isnt the new air. it's simply called "macbook". the new air is the same as the last one just with an updated processor
To be fair, their watch looks pretty good. Why laugh at it?
Very well spoken dude. You have a natural knack for speaking and doing vids like this. Very informative as well. Well done dude!
Anyone in 2019 when you know MKBHD had perfectly predicted the future?
'Not from Apple'
Thanks for keeping it real dude. Overpriced nonsense
Find me one adapter that has USBC, HDMI and USB3 connections like the one Apple made.
SchneiderMan We have tons of them in China lol, for less than $10 USD.
RMTV apple products are manufactured in....?
Marques gets right to the point explains in detail, and is correct on explaining USB Type-C.
Excited about future! Technology is improving at such a fast pace, it's really exciting. Charging with Type C and the crazy transfer speeds are mouth watering... When should we expect laptops to come with this (combined with 5th gen Intel processors)?
the future of apple tech is pay for breath
Andreas Hagström How about syncing a phone while charging the computer at the same time? It LITERALLY makes no sense.
When Its Comes To Explanation MKBHD Is The Boss.
Just Love It :)

Watching this after the MacBook Pro 2016 release. Marques called it.
Morten Frolich Also don`t forget Google Pixel has a Usb-c to Usb-c charging cable. He called that as well.
Here in July 2018,we have USB-C everywhere,so you were 100% right!
2015:This is going 5o be everywhere
2020:All my gadgets still have micro usb
Mkbhd you won new MacBook has more usb-c ports
Actually he was wrong. the 2016 macbooks only had 1 usb c port, the ones with more are the macbook pro
JY Yew this video is about the MacBook with one port. it's in the video. he definitely meant the one after it, aka the new MacBook Pro from 10/2016.
Joe Gibes he was talking about the next macbook (the macbook released after the one he reviewed), which was just a 2016 refresh of the 2015 macbook
Man you've always been one of the best content creators and one of the best tech reviewers. such a pleasure to watch good content does so so well : )
"Usb type-c is the future marques thinks apple wants to say. New iphone still having lightning ports :I"
Lightning ports SUCK
which one is the video of mkbhd explaining why apple has high prices?
A little word we all know Apple to be. Pretentious.
because of a thing called capitalism. prices for products are set at whatever consumers are willing to pay for it. also, most of their products really aren't that expensive when compared to the competition with similar specs. and you're paying for build quality, design, etc.
dan428 It's not that, it was something to do with Apples absurd amount of advertisement
Random Help That was beats headphone explained.
But Apple actually do set high prices, so consumers will think it's "the best"
Expensive=Good, high quality.
Dude you totally called it with the new mac book pro
Nice description and commentary on other type connectors Marques. Thank you.
Great video! You're a fantastic presenter. :)
Yet the iPhone 7 didn't have a fucking USB-C port. What the fuck Apple.
UR Stupid
NYxoid Oh really? Give me a reasonable argument as to why I am.
Lightning port is much better on mobile devices than USB-C.
NYxoid How? Slower data transfer rates, non standardization. Every techy I've talked to thinks that USB-C is not only better than lightning but great for both laptops AND phones.
That's the beauty of Apple innovation. Nothing fucking changes
Hope the port doesn't wear out fast due to it being used for everything from power to flash drives to monitors etc...
Recommended by RUclips in 2020, congratulation you are a prophet 😁
Who got this recommended 5 years later
Who’s here after Apple announced the 2020 iPhone lineup?

I DON'T GET THESE COMMENTS, EVERYONE IS HERE AFTER THE iPHONE LINEUP.
When you're watching this video with your phone having usb type c 🤣🤣
Where did you plug your usb type c into? Like is it some sort of box or what is it?
the old mkbhd intro never gets old
USB 3.1 is NOT USB Type C.
USB Type C is the connector, USB 3.1 is a standard which also works with standard usb a and b ports
Why USB C and not just called it USB 3.1 or even USB 4....
Because the C refers to the plug type, where 3.1 is the "standard"... See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#/media/File:USB.svg
Dustin N Still dont know why they called it USB C... I think USB 4 makes for a better name
Cranking All Day the same reason they didn't call USB-A, USB-B, USB-Mini or USB Micro USB 1, 2, 3 & 4 - they're just different form-factors, not newer standards.
Cranking All Day Imagine USB like an engine. Although you can find "engine 3.1" in a truck, you can also find the same "3.1 engine" in a small car.
Cranking All Day In my opinion, USB-C just has something, like a ring to it. USB-C sounds better than USB 4 to me. But to each, their own.
Good call on how far USB-C will go. Kudos sir.
What happens if you plug in 2 usb type-c's on both the sides of the chromebook pixel?
...They work as usual...
are people getting dumber these days? What happens if you plug multiple usb devices into your existing computer? Does it blow up? No. They work. Why would USB type c be any different?
THINK BEFORE TYPING.
Will Davis I think he means two chargers
Will Davis You seem to be dumb.... plug in multiple devices won't charge your computer.... but try plugging in two energy cables to it and tell me what happens.
Nicolas Frasson He wasn't exactly clear in his question, makes me think he didn't understand anything about USB 3.1 I'm guessing they'll configure it to only charge from one port at a time, but I suppose it could be configured to charge faster as long as the battery can handle the current as a small sacrifice of battery longevity.
2015: no
2016: not yet
2017: nope
2018: wait buddy
2019: yesssss .
Thanks for clearing that up!
Damn, I made my comment before seeing this one. 😂😂😂
You are a very articulate you tuber, keep it up. Great Job
It's very funny that Apple first gave USB Type C on their MacBooks but they didn't give in the iPhone Xs Max
Awesome video, *****!
Whose there in 2020 when Apple still hasn't ditched lightning and moved to USB C
Concise, comprehensive, "professionally" produced, entertaining, and of course informational. Thank you, Marques.💥
