Seiken Denesetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure/Sword of Mana has the greatest video game soundtrack ever. The arranged version: Let Thoughts Ride of Knowledge is EPIC! Kenji Ito is underrated genius. I still love Hiroki's work on Secret of Mana
I wouldn't say Secret of Mana 1 or Seiken Densetsu 2 which it's actually is in Japan. The soundtrack on it screeches and destroys my ears. At least in the caves and dwarven cave.
My fav part of the original was the multiplayer. Playing with my older brother is on of my most memorable memories with him. Unfortunately the remake is solo only
Right away I was blown away by the graphics and then also the fact that the Character selection seemed unique for most fantasy style RPGs. Really only Duran & Angela fit that regular mold, and Charlotte to a degree but she was at least clearly not all human so that made it also interesting. Then the more and more I played the game via the fan translation the more I was blown away.
Secret of mana 2 is so good it literally makes me upset that the first game gets all the accolades. Literally destroyed the original in every single way. Put itself up there on the map with Chrono Trigger and Terranigma. INSANELY amazing game. Played this as a kid, Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3 are the stuff dreams are made of. Hell you can play these games as an adult for the first time and you'll be blown away by them. Pure magic.
as a kid? it WOULD have maybe done those things... IF it had ever gotten released in english in 1995 or 96 as secret of mana 2. when it was supposed to likely before you were even born. tbh it is better than the first one and not by just a little bit. it is massive (while slightly buggy) the best graphics of the decade not to mention the finest soundtrack and yet was still unknown because the jrpg even in 2012 was STILL NOT getting the respect on north america it deserved. they waited 3 years to bring just final fantasy to north america and then finally last to europe so stick that in your stocking stuffer .. or stiff it in your stocking sticker with santa.. liar claus. and unlike spoiled pig childrens from these days we didnt get to just rip a game onto a computer back then with some fan translation. we simply got STIFFED. this lists along with mother 3 as real snubs. that to this day i say up yours nintendo. well we still cant play dragon quest 11 on a 3ds so lol even now some things simply havent improved for those of us that know jrpg's are the god's chosen genre of gaming.
Seiken Densetsu 3 was a big upgrade from 2. On 2 you can get cornered by two werewolves until you die they just keep hitting you knocking you to the ground and continue that.
It's even MORE upsetting that you call Secret of Mana the "original" where the first game was actually Final Fantasy Adventure. First was FFA, then SoM, then Trials
Terranigma is not that great of a game which makes me wary of som2 is as good as people say. I love CT it’s my favorite game of all time and Soul blazer and Illusion of Gaia are great. I hope SOM 2 is actually as great as everyone claims.
I ordered the Japanese version of this game from Japan when it first came out and played it on the Super Nintendo. It was a great experience. I got to the end of the game but never beat it. I didn’t understand the Japanese characters. I made it to the final boss (Dark Prince) with only one class change.
I think one of the things that kept this series alive for 20 years is the popularity of a certain character in the doujin circles. I would recommend the remake by a significant margin, and this was my favourite SNES game of all time. The dodge mechanic by itself was a game changer, but the quality of life improvements, voice acting (even if the direction is poor, it's there), huge new endgame dungeon, 3rd class change and both the original SNES and modern remix soundtrack being options just make it feel like going back to the original brings nothing but the 16 bit charm.
I had the same experience as you. I was bummed when I heard it wasn't coming out in the US but in 2000, in college, my first experience with a T1 connection instead of dialup, my buddy and me got the ROM and translation and played this for so many hours. Think we beat it 2 or 3 times. Kevin is also my favorite character in the game.
@@Xygor Gosh, it's been so long. I tried to play with my daughter in the Collection of Mana but she wanted to play Mana 1 because she thinks the sprite is cute. I like all of the characters. Reis has a really cool story. Duran looks rad. Angela is a powerful mage. Probably Kevin, Reis and Duran, Angela or Hawkeye
Another fantastic SNES RPG that I didn't get a chance to play until just recently. I remember hearing about it in Nintendo Power and other video game magazines back in the day, and since Secret of Mana was one of the first RPGs I ever played when it first came out in 1993, I was really excited for the sequel, since the first one had made such an emotional impact on me with the soundtrack, storyline, characters, etc. When it was eventually decided to not bring it to the USA, I was really upset! Well, 2 years ago I found a reproduction English translation cart for sale on Amazon for only $25! I bought it right away, and once it arrived, I popped it in and started a new game file immediately! My 12-year-old son also loves the game, and is really into RPGs, playing EarthBound, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana 2, etc. This is such an amazing game, and truly one of the greatest Super Nintendo games of all time, if not in the top running for one of the best games of all time.
It may not have come to America, but Seiken Densetsu 3 was definitely popular at the time as well. I remember playing the ROM that had an english patch for it already in the late 90's there was a massive fan base for this game that an excellent english patch was readily available for the world to play.
We love the interconnected story line for each character and the Class System, we played through all of it. edit: I played also the demo of the ramake and it really is spot on in every single detail of the SNES version.
There's a lot of really good stuff in this game, but the combat kills it for me. I like the idea, and it's great not to have to wait nearly as long as Secret of Mana, but your inputs are constantly getting eaten, and enemies can continuously use their abilities, preventing you from healing and taking you from full health to nothing, especially in the later parts of the game. It's a frustrating experience. Soundtrack's fantastic and replayability is high, especially because of the job system, but there are moments when I wanted to throw my controller out of frustration because the game made me feel like I was fighting it to get a word in edgewise.
I hear you! I bought Collection of Mana on the Switch some months ago and played Secret of Mana 2 (Trials of Mana). I thought my version was broken because the battle system seemed unresponsive. I had to read through lots of blogs before one guy explained that this is how it was. Yes, the 0-100% bar from SoM 1 is gone, but they replaced it with an even slower system that still makes you wait, makes any strategy on hitting enemies unresponsive, and the worst: when there are enemies on the screen you are almost forced to take them out because your characters goes into battle mode. I will play this through, but I definitely prefer SoM 1.
The percentage bar is gone but their is still a critical timing factor in the battle system to figure out like when to attack after being attacked, so that ur inputs aren't getting "eaten"
@@fukngroovnkc3700 I'm not talking about regular attacks. I'm saying that when certain things happen in this game (typically enemy spells and special attacks), I can't even get into the menu to cast a spell. There's a weird loading time issue in what was originally a cartridge game, and it caused more than one game over because I couldn't heal.
@@SamWeltzinok so like the loading times in final fantasy anthology "cartridge game" for PS1- that would suck cuz the battle actions are fas I just beat the first boss battle 3 minutes ago & took me a couple times, without loading issues, I got lucky & scored a cartridge
@@fukngroovnkc3700 I think it's built into the game. I played it on emulator like ten years ago because it wasn't out in the US, and it had very similar issues. Going to guess they tried to get rid of the exploit that was in Secret of Mana, where you can chain spells until you're out of MP, and they went too far trying to "fix" that. I say this having beaten the game. It gets way worse as the game progresses. Whether you let that be a dealbreaker for you or not is up to you. As I said, I like a lot of the rest of the game. But that aspect was really frustrating when I was playing for my Let's Play channel and lost a bunch of progress in the second-to-last dungeon because I literally could not fight back.
*I LIKE* how hard artists were trying to paint the characters with resolution of like three pixels per a detail and a few pixels total for the whole character. Even though nowadays people love pixel art, I guess the artist would also prefer their art scanned in a high resolution (not "AI-improved" blurry mess) for games like this to have it at least in an alternative mode. Though this would require the game to be re-released. I wonder how similar the 3D designs of the re-releases to the original designs.
I never got to play this game on the snes but I did play Secret of Mana, which for many years was one of my favourite games ever. Its not anymore (after playing the remake the combat is so jarring now in 2022). Anyway when I saw the demo of Trials on the ps4 store I was so excited 😊 after playing it I purchased it instantly. I played the game about 5 times and absolute treasure it now and believe it to be one of the best rogs ever, at least one of the best class based rpgs. I Absolutely wish they would do this full remake with all the other mana games like Sword of Mana on the GBA which is classes too from what I remember I don't know if SE truly know how happy it makes UK people to see JP only games localised ❤ By the way I'm 40 so old haha and the remake is ❤❤❤❤❤
i got this in my recommended, and i agree that this game is one of the best rpgs on the snes. i've beaten it with every character, and it's such a fun game. i think that live-a-live is better, but seiken densetsu 3 is still a great game
I love the original, one of those games you discovered via emulation back in the day that made you wish you lived in Japan in the 90s. That being said, the remake is AMAZING, and really should be the blueprint for a new Mana game.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the original version being part of the Collection of Mana. I like this but it also has some things I dislike. I like the class change system and being able to allocate stats points again (Final Fantasy Adventure, which was the first Mana game, on Gameboy allowed this while Secret of Mana didn't for some reason) but I didn't like each character being limited to a single weapon type and I didn't like the removal of ranged weapons. I understand them not wanting characters to be able to use any weapon like in the earlier games but IMO it would have been better if they either gave each character both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon or allowed them to use additional weapon types based on what classes they become. The most memorable part for me was the first time I took a second class change. I had Hawkeye as my lead and knew what class I wanted him to become but my Internet was down and not going to be restored for weeks so I only had a vague memory of what I needed to do to make him a Rogue (My favorite common Fantasy RPG class). I made the second change but he became a Nomad so I reloaded my last save worried that I had screwed up at the first class change. I was so relived when taking the dark choice for the second change led to Rogue.
In Seiken Densetsu 2 I found all melee weapons absolutely irrelevant only used for hacking away bushes. Ranged weapons were superior in SD2. Because you use a melee weapon and get too close they just stunlock you into oblivion. The very reason I still won't complete SD2 is because of that damn stunlock completely ruins the fun the moment you start fighting the werewolves that corner you then stunlock you until you die. SD3 blew SD2 out of the water having more balance in the way of handling melee. The specific weapon type was specific for their class. Kevin with his fists, Duran with sword, Angela with her magic.
Angela Kevin Charlotte Was my fave party but all characters are good. Hawks NinjaMaster is great for debuffs 🌠 Durants Edelfrei is a strong class too ❤
I enjoyed this game, but I definitely preferred the fluidity of the first Secret of Mana's combat system. Sword of Mana for GBA is also awesome. Have you considered doing a video review of that game?
I played the original SD3 waaay back in 2003, and I loved it at the time, so I think I can say that I think the remake is an improvement in every sense. Definitely give it a shot.
Man this sucks...I love and have the first game. I didn't know there was a genuine part 2 till you mentioned it just now. I have secret of evermore. I actually thought that was part 2. I need to get a hold of this.
Can't believe you didn't mention it's strongest feature the class change. Up until this time I didn't know of a RPG that did this until Seiken Densetsu 3.
Having played every entry in the Mana series, I can agree with you, that it one of the best. But THE best. No. Secret Of Mana handily beats it for many of the reasons you highlighted. The leveling system is needlessly convoluted & limiting, requiring MUCH more grinding than was reasonable, the hand-to-hand combat system wasn't as free-form as the original and the balancing of the game was always just "off". Secret Of Mana was and still is my favorite game of all time, and for very good reasons. It gets MUCH more right than it does wrong. SOM2 is a beautiful, wonderful game, in it's own right. It pales in comparison to SOM.
i personally prefer secrets of mana remake. they did an excelent job on that game and the graphics ad voice acting make it the preferred way for me to play the remake. sharlets voice is kind of clingy but she is supposed to be that way i think. i bought it for a little bit over 25 dollers on steam.
Best rpg of all time to me. You covered pretty much all the points. Best looking game including best animations and best ost of its time. The only non-best part is the story since it's not as involved and complicated due to having multiple story lines. Unfortunately seiken densetsu 4 was a let down imo. Hopefully the future 5th installment will be a great AAA game since we got pretty positive feedbacks from the tom remake.
I'm trying to get into this but I just don't like the combat as much as the first Secret of Mana. It just seems to be a button mashing kaleidoscope with no real tactics. It's also really bad at signposting where you're supposed to actually be going next to advance the story. I'm hoping that I'll grow to like it more if I stick with it.
In comparison to getting stunlocked to death without anyway of attacking back in SD2? Makes me think Square had no idea how to make a beat em up giving you no way to attack back after you're knocked to the ground getting pummeled to death.
I wanted to play this for a long time and ended up getting the remake on sale. It's also good but doesn't feel as polished as the original honestly. This game has so much versatility though that I think I'll play the original via emulation so I can experience multiple paths at the same time.
Secret of Mana 2 Greatest in battle system, graphic, music, magics and techs using scene. Fairly great dungeons. But lack of sidequests and any secrets like its name. Everything you can get from seeding in the Inn. Find rare items in secret passage or get from boss or from dungeon or complete quest are more interesting than the seeds. if have some games will better than SoM2, It 's will be Tales of Phantasia , The Most complex dungeons in SNES RPG.
*WHY* "Secret of Mana", and not "The Secret of Mana" (if they mean a concrete secret), or "A Secret of Mana" (if they mean in general)? Did they forget to use an article?
Trials of mana would actually be Secret of Mana 3 aka Seiken Densetsu 3. Secret of mana is actually Secret of Mana 2 aka Seiken Densetsu 2, Final Fantasy Adventure is actually Seikendensetsu 1.
My one gripe. I say "mon a" or 'maun a" you say "man a" but 'man a' sounds bad to my ears. Not sure who is correct but i vote for not using man follower by a. Asking ai the ai said both are valid. But man a destroys it for me.

I discuss the class change system from 1:33 to about 3:03 and give it quite a bit of praise...
@@Xygor My bad I might have missed it. I was just fanboying over the video I didn't hear it.
@@bizznick444joe7 no worries! Hope you liked the video otherwise
Im sorry but that last song, it reminds me of a Link to the Past to an uncomfortable degree
We need to have Terragnima either remastered or remade.
Agreed!
Hard disagree when it comes to soundtrack between SD 2 vs 3. Also, lacks the charm of 2.
3 does have a lot going for it though.
I think you need to hear SD2 soundtrack again. The most annoying sound ever.
I was wondering if anybody has any information on the fan made SNES Secret of Mana 2? Any info you can give would be appreciated.
The actual cart?
@@Xygor Yes.
Love your voice!
Do a Terragnima review! One of the best SNES RPGs
I have already reviewed it! Check my RPG playlist
Played the original back in the day and the first real western release but I must say.. for me the remake is the best version of the game.
No. Chrono Trigger is.
Chrono trigger enters the chat :D
I just found this online and purchased it. Now the wait begins…😂
Just gonna keep drinking deep from this cup
*siiiiiip*
Yall ever play Eastward?
had the orginal for the snes but got lost duo japanese language.. i finaly did it last year with the remake
So true, I finished the remake but it feels so empty, the original had that bit of love on it.
I played the demo for the remake and it just wasn't the same. I just wanted to play the original
I have a feeling I would think the same!
i like trials of mana more than secret of mana
Secret of Mana 2 Greatest in battle system, graphic, music, magics and techs using scene. Fairly great dungeons. But lack of sidequests and any secrets like its name. Everything you can get from seeding in the Inn. Find rare items in secret passage or get from boss or from dungeon or complete quest are more interesting than the seeds.
if have some games will better than SoM2, It 's will be Tales of Phantasia , The Most complex dungeons in SNES RPG.
Great
Its really hard for me to take a fantasy game seriously when its main character is called Kevin. :-(
*WHY* "Secret of Mana", and not "The Secret of Mana" (if they mean a concrete secret), or "A Secret of Mana" (if they mean in general)?
Did they forget to use an article?
Lore of Secret of Mana 2 (Trials of Mana) - The Greatest SNES RPG? Momentum 100
I still havint beat this game lol
Trials of mana would actually be Secret of Mana 3 aka Seiken Densetsu 3. Secret of mana is actually Secret of Mana 2 aka Seiken Densetsu 2,
Final Fantasy Adventure is actually Seikendensetsu 1.
Right, so like you start the video off with music from the *actual* greatest SNES RPG.
That's xygors video intro which happens to be magus' theme from chrono trigger
Chrono Trigger is still the greatest JRPG on SNES and arguably all time
My one gripe. I say "mon a" or 'maun a" you say "man a" but 'man a' sounds bad to my ears. Not sure who is correct but i vote for not using man follower by a.
Asking ai the ai said both are valid. But man a destroys it for me.
Trials of Mana is a downgrade imo. 3D lacks charm.
They did a terrible job with the Secret of Mana Collection on the Switch .
Bare minimum effort
No. Chrono Trigger is.
