I disagree that Atkins was all about shakes and bars. He was all about the meat and fat. After he died, his book was rewritten and "toned down" to be politically correct, and corporate interests capitalized on his name to produce ultraprocessed shakes and bars. I reckon Dr Atkins is turning in his grave over what has become of his legacy.

I read Dr Atkins' original book in the 80's. My husband and I both lost significant amounts of weight. His book was about REAL FOOD. Unfortunately we allowed the dogma to frighten and gaslight us and we gained the weight back and became very ill. It wasn't until we re-embraced his vision and principles that we regained our health. Her statement about Dr Atkins is factually incorrect.

Whether Atkins, low-carb or keto, the food industry is quick to capitalise on any opportunity and promote junk as "healthy". What is disappointing is that there are still entrenched interests which resist any attempt to promote prevention over treatment. It is encouraging that the waves continue to roll in and that more clinicians are stepping forward to advance the science amd apply it to help their patients overcome an increasing range of conditions.
As a patient who has used this approach to avoid progession to Type 2 Diabetes, I know that it works.

Excellent. Thank you. I've been low carb since Oct 2021 which remitted my diabetes. I also gained a vast number of improvements in my health and am now metabolically healthy proven by blood tests and scans. I don't want to go back to what I was eating because I feel so much healthier now. I'm a 66 year old female and now weigh what I did in the early 1980s before I had children. I've had a 27.5% decrease in my weight and that was without strenuous exercise; I have back and knee issues and life a sedentary lifestyle doing pilates and stretching and strengthening exercises and light hand weights. I recently lost the last 4 kgs by cutting out cheese (which causes me constipation). The other day I bought two pieces of meat, one 3kgs and the other 1.5kgs and carried them into the house, one in each hand (a total of 4.5kgs). It's amazing how heavy they were and reminded me of what a difference losing 22kgs (just over 7 x 3kgs!) would have on my body and not having to carry all that weight around all the time.

Keep up the good fight. I am 72, I am obese, and I am in the pre-diabetic category. None of my various physicians, including my PCP and my Onclogists (PC), are recommending a low carb diet even though they know that I dropped 90 Lbs 12 years ago on a physician supervised whole foods low carb diet. When I dropped that weight ALL of my medical issues disappeared, including high blood sugar, and highish blood pressure, etc. I came off ALL my meds, and my numbers were excellent. I was very near my ideal weight. Unfortunately, I put it all back on when I tried to transition to a maintenance diet. Predictably, my numbers went south. All my physicians give the same reason for not recommending low carb. They say the studies show that low carb is not sustainable. Ugh. My opinion is that low carb is probably my only hope. I say lets get the weight off with low carb because it works. Once that is done, lets get focused on sustaining a healthy diet long term. That is what a plan to do. I recommend that doctors/nutritionists work to help people sustain a reduced carb diet long term.

People the world over have struggled with weight their entire life while following traditional food recommendations. Something has to give if what you're doing is not working. The number of people who have been able to get their weight under control & reduce and even eliminate the use of medication with a low carb keto or carnivore diet can't be ignored.

The fact that a diet can make you lose weight fast doesnt prove that it is a good dieto n the long term, after all you can lose weight by starving to death. The problem is that the basic diet of most american is so bad that even a bad diet like ketogenic diet will be better. Very low carb high fat diet will decrease you insulin sensitivity and shorten your life on the long term as some studies have shown

I once had a Diabetes Dietitian as a flatmate. She was awesome, but I'm pretty sure some of the stuff she was talking about with patients was the exact opposite of how to manage diabetes in a healthy way. And she was fully in line with standard of care from what I could tell. She was also very vocal when she saw other flatmates doing pretty much anything for health reasons.
I feel like dietetics is designed to keep people alive rather than in optimum health. eg calculate the goo they put through the tube if you don't have a do not resuscitate request... and that's why the higher ups seem to always have a problem with progress or anyone trying to do anything positive.

The problem with these low carbs models is that they ignore facts that point in the other direction, why in blue zones they mostly eat carbs ? why in Vietnam where they mostly eat rice at every meal there is virtually no diabetes and obesity in the country ? Extreme diets are the enemy of longevity, Ketogenic diet is very extreme so how a dietician can encourage that kind of diet, if we except some specific cases like epilepsy. Studies show that people following very low carb diet have seriously reduced lifespan for reasons that are not clear but probably linked to the fact that humans are mostly starch-ivore. The problem of obesity and diabetes in usa, and in more an more country, is the hyper palatability of processed food, so people over eat, this being compounded by lack of physical activity. There are no population that thrive or even survive on ketogenic diet, in the story of humanity, none , zero not even the inuits whom by the way have a genetic mutation that prevent them to switch to ketosis, wonder why ? think about natural selection...
