I've had a 40 gallon reef for a few years but recently set up a 5 gallon planted tank. I just added 4 ember tetras and 4 blue dream shrimp along with a mystery snail. So far the shrimp are more interesting and entertaining than I expected.
This is interesting to me. Mind if I ask for a small update? Starting my own small planted tank soon and will have live plants first, then plan on shrimp later.
@@fuzzy8593 I haven't done a whole lot recently with this. I have 2 shrimp and the snail still in the tank. Just ordered some additives to get the water chemistry up to par and then want to add fish again and some more shrimp and plants.
@@2010johnking Thank you. I’ve been trying to figure things out and one thing that is missing is testimonials. I appreciate it quite a bit. I have had tanks throughout my life and am excited to invest time and care in a planted tank. Always wanted a saltwater tank but they seem really intimidating. Maybe in 5 or 10 years, after I learn to control regular tanks. Hey, thank you again, wish you luck.
Love neocaradina, have a tank full of them, plants, leaves, danios and rasboras. Have a deep sand substrate, decent filter and light. Never done a water change in 9 months and they're thriving!
Ugh i bought plants from my LFS without soaking them and all my crystal shrimp freaked out and died within 12 hrs. Glad u are recommending soaking the plants first! ❤
Nice video mate! I got a small nano tank I made out of a 20L glass bottle. Filled it with Rick's from a local river, and plants. Been running 3 weeks and added my shrimp. So far so good. They been in a week, a lot of hiding. Today tho they all over the place.
Matt is one of the best partners you can have. If not the best :) Someday I would like to start a tank with shrimp in it myself. Great video to keep in mind.
I strongly support the dual filter approach. I always use both a sponge filter and a hang-on-back. In a planted tank, the dual approach allows for heavy stocking with minimal water changes.
Agree - HOB and Canister is also a cool dual combo. So nice to put your mechanical filtration in the HOB. Much easier to clean more often than if it’s in the canister where you can then focus on biological filtration options.
One day I came home from work and one of my cherry shrimp was missing without a trace. I’m going to check the filter. The only fish I had in with it were neon tetra, mystery 🐌 and Cory catfish.
The ideal TDS is normally around 200-300 for neocaridina shrimp. It's not often something that gets worried about as I have seen and heard them doing well in a much wider range of TDS levels. As long as you avoid really extreme levels they generally do fine. The issue with TDS is it's a measurement of everything, so everything can have a effect on TDS. Plant foods, hardscape and just about everything in between can mess around with it. If you're looking at just keeping neocaridina shrimp then I wouldn't chase the ideal parameters. But if you're looking at breeding them in large numbers then engineering your water with RO water and specific mineral mixes is probably your best bet.
@@BRSfresh Thank you very much. I had one tank go as high as 1100ppm and some shrimp, especially Amano have survived. I will purchase some RO water and try to get closer to 400ppm. It shocked me to see how widely the readings over my tanks varied.
Yes, we have Amanos doing great work in our 30 gallon Eden in the studio. We do have Spider Wood in there as well as plants which is where they spend most of their time.
I was in the same situation. On two occasions, I tried to start a colony from 10 shrimp and failed miserably. Then, last month, via a fishkeeping FB group, I traded some of my plant cuttings for 20-ish neocaridina from another user. She included some females that were already berried-up. I don't know if I still have all the shrimp she gave me but I'm seeing some pinhead-size babies that definitely weren't there before, so hopefully things are looking up. Also, FYI, I've seen a larger Amano pounce on a cherry shrimp so be aware that can happen.
How about amount of water change and frequent of doing it? I have many of this shrimps breeder telling me not to always do a change the water. Even if you do a water change, just 25% once a month is more than enough so that they are not stress. My Cherry Red shrimps did hatch some baby shrimps but when they grow up to like half an inch, they just died. But the mother is still alive. I always do 25% water change weekly.

Do you soak them with peroxide or just water?
Love these species focused vids, I've been keeping fish and inverts' for near 20years and I still find I learn something new watching, really helps!
Great info as always, Matt. I’m gonna get some shrimp for my 75 gallon as a cleanup crew.
Mistook this channel for Bulk Reef Supply but no regrets accidentally finding this hidden gem!
I'm glad to see Matt making out here. Great video!!
Thank you so much! ❤
Us too!
Thank you so much, this was very helpful. (all the way from Gilbert, AZ)
Great to hear!

Chili Rasboras on a different channel!! LOL! Great video, Matt.

Nice video Matt, clear and concise, a planted tank just isn’t the same without some shrimp👌
Clear and concise
Yes I still have to buy a test kit 😮✌️🙏🇨🇦
Great info Matt loving videos more please 🙏
Yay fish shop matt!

Thanks for the informative video! Can you do one on green neon tetras?
Good video. I'm thinking about starting my first tank and am thinking of doing shrimp.
Let us know how it goes!

Do you know if i can keep shrimps in a dragon stone setup?
Yes, we have Amanos doing great work in our 30 gallon Eden in the studio. We do have Spider Wood in there as well as plants which is where they spend most of their time.
I have had cherry shrimp in a dragon stone setup for a year
They did well
Dragon stone is good because it doesn't affect the ph, it's ph neutral like Lava rock. Plenty of holes for Shrimp to hide in with Dragon stone.
Are they ok in a PH around 8 and hard water? I've had conflicting opinions but I need a good clean up crew in the community tank
we have a tank with Neocaridinas that's running 7.5 on PH and around 250 TDS and everyone's happy
Spurlina works as food
❤❤❤
John Robert Bellande?
@@DashDrones no, just Clement Bellande.
@@clementbellande8720 ah cool 👍
I have zero luck either neos. Idk why but they never do well for me. Amanos on the other hand THRIVE in my tanks.

I've never done a water change and the shrimp population is booming. Make sure you have tons of plants👍
Anyone kept neo's in a tank with a KH below 1?
I accidentally left a giant tape worm in my shrimp tank and now I can find it how do I rid the fish of tape worms without hurting my shrimps
Yikes! Try PraziPro

@@BRSfresh I know I’m worried on mixing the plants and animals in that tank bc of it and working on the tank is kind of scary as well
Are you going to tell me…. in what size do they come????
You will see a variety at your local fish stores. I have gotten them as small as 3/8” and up to 1”.
No way!!
Again you leave out aquarium size..?:)
These can be kept in a wide variety of tank sizes but 3g is a good minimum. Will really depend on the setup and maintenance schedule
