Growing up south asian, my grandmother was against us eating bananas at night similar to how your mom was against apples. I wonder what these fruits did to them-
I think it’s because fruit (and other sugary or starchy foods) by themselves late at night cause a glucose/insulin spike (which happens throughout the day too)- but the body needs a break from that and normally gets that break overnight. So yeah eating an apple at night here and there is fine, but not a good habit to have long-term

YES I always heard that if you spilled the salt you needed to throw it over your shoulder to counteract the bad luck. One time I was at a restaurant, I spilled the salt and I started freaking out trying to throw it over my shoulder as fast as possible and I ended up THROWING IT DIRECTLY INTO A BABY’S FACE by accident so I guess I’m cursed forever
the nail cutting thing is also a superstition in my culture as well and i was talking about it with my dad the other day and apparently there's logic behind the superstition he said that back then people didn't have nail clippers so they used to cut nails with like a small knife and if you were not careful and there was very minimal light, you could literally risk cutting your fingers off and thats why our asian ancestors say no to cutting nails at night
the different superstitions across cultures are so fascinating, but i love that everyone has their superstitions that they are absolutely trained to uphold (my mom is US southern and to this day I cannot bring myself to break any of her superstitions, of which there are many). I would love to break the superstition cycle but I am too afraid lmao.
@@pendlera2959 oh there are a bunch - the main ones that i always followed was if you're walking with someone holding hands and there is a pole coming up, you say bread and butter before you let go of their hands, or else your relationship is doomed 🤣 there's also black eyed peas and collard greens on new years for luck and money (and if you don't eat them, you therefore will have a terrible new year). Never eat both ends of a loaf of bread (spells financial ruin i think?) and never put your purse or wallet on the floor (keep at waist level or higher). oh and never leave a rocking chair rocking...those are the ones off the top of my head. i just always remembered it was always some new superstition when i was growing up

The 'not facing in the north while sleeping' sort of has a quite good reason. The blood flows north to south in our body, and when we face north, our body's blood flow get quite messed up. This happens because we all know that the electromagnetic field is the strongest in the north. That is what my father told me, and he is not at all superstitious

Btw I'm African, Nigerian to be precise, and I recognize some of these superstitions: whistling at night, writing names with red ink (you don't know how many fights were started by this back in school _🤣🤣_ ). We've also got extras like looking in a mirror at night. It's safe to say I've tried all this 😂.

It's funny the story about not eating apples at night. In Portugal we have a similar superstition but with a different fruit. People say not to eat oranges at night because they "can" kill you -- "orange in the morning is gold, in the afternoon is silver and at night she kills". (in Portuguese sounds better because it rhymes hihihi)
