Ty Reacts To THE BEATLES "Strawberry Fields Forever"

- Today we dive into another legendary BEATLES song "Strawberry Fields Forever". It was released on February 13, 1967 as the double A-side single with "Penny Lane". John Lennon based the tune on his childhood memories of playing in the garden of Strawberry Field, a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool !
Amazing Tune ! What Do Ya'll Think ?!

The song was not over, there was more. This song was actually two different recordings. One was fast and the other was slow. John liked both versions. George Martin
matched the speed of both recordings and that is what you were listening to.
I 'm not sure but i had read somewhere that this song was recorded in more than 2 recording takes.I remember something was reported for about more than 20-25 takes but i maybe wrong. It was also rumoured that this ended up being the most complex song they ever completed in their whole discography.
Great Comment about the Mix! Yes I cut off the song too early, I know big mistake on my part. I screwed up!
@@reactionextraction did you listen to it again, to hear the end? They did that in several songs of theirs, where you think it's over, but it's not.
Geoff Emerick was the primary sound engineer for this song , not Martin
You totally missed the end of the song! Back then because they only had four tracks, they had drums on one track, guitars on a different track, vocals, etc...They put it out on stereo later. This song was revolutionary when it was released. No one was doing this kind of music back then. It certainly still holds up against any so-called music on the radio today!
Agreed it not only holds up ..... its still better 😎😎
John Lennon lived near a orphanage and he used to climb the walls and played with the kids - the orphanage was called Strawberry Fields. The orphanage is long gone but the gates still remain. The song is Lennons memories of that place when he was a kid growing up in Liverpool.
Ringo's drumming is stellar.
In the 1960's everyone listened to mono. Stereo was seen as a novelty thing and the artists were usually not involved in the mixing process. It was usually up to a couple of studio technicians to make a quick stereo mix and it was always made for loud speakers. The thought process was something like: "OK, how do we separate the sounds as much as possible to make it in stereo?"
I'm kinda learning that "Mono" is the way to go with Beatles tunes 😎
Yes, but I think it also had something to do with the limited amount of recording tracks they had at the time. They wouldn't have been able to do a center-based stereo mix the way we are used to nowadays even if they wanted to.
The standard at EMI was to record all the music on one track of a two-track machine, and all the vocals on the other track of the machine. When it came to overdubs they used a second two-track machine.
Then the two tracks -- which were NOT stereo -- were mixed together as Mono -- because the two track recordings were pre-mixed MONO. The main means of promotion was radio airplay -- which was MONO. And the market was MONO.
George Martin addresses all those issues in his book "All You Need is Ears".
Guys, you didn’t let it finish - it fades back in for the “I buried Paul” part…,
I know I cut off the song too early. Yikes that's a pretty bad mistake on my part.
Stereo was in its infancy. The spacial qualities were just being explored. From Revolver to Mystery Tour. The studio itself was used as an instrument,. A lot of creative work being done.
I think the song is absolutely amazing, killer studio work being done for sure.
"Led Zeppelin's" first Lp was 1969. They were warmed-over "Yardbirds".
"Strawberry Fields Forever" was originally a single.
To add onto the stereo convo-The Beatles released a mono and stereo mix of this stuff, and the mono mix was the main mix people listened to. Very few people had stereo systems. This meant that the engineers probably spent a lot more time on the mono mixes.
To your point about the drums being on one side of the mix, the Beatles also recorded to four track in this era (!). This means the drums probably didn’t have many spot mics, and were bounced down to one track for mixing. This meant you had to pan the entire kit together. You couldn’t really have a kick in the center or a snare slightly off center. But to build on other peoples’ points on this, conventions around stereo panning techniques didn’t exist yet because stereo was brand new.
Awesome info ... Indeed Beatles in mono I hear are the better mixes 😎😎
67 is pre zeppelin by a year. But this was the time Pink Floyd was recording their first album PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN and the Beatles let them hang out and taught them how to record in a studio.
Isn’t this when people were still experimenting with stereo? I think that is part of it. I mean, they had MONO records!
True Dat 😎 I'm learning the "Mono" Beatles mixes might be the better way to go.
Released 1967. Imagine how this sounded to a 15-year-old (me). I remember liking it but not understanding it.
The Beatles took popular music and turned it upside down and inside out (that would make a good lyric...), breaking all the rules and being allowed to because - well they were the Beatles. I was learning to play the piano and being taught music - proper, classical music - and trying to fit what I was hearing on the radio into what I understood to be "proper" Music. I failed, but I still understood these guys were doing something wonderful.
We must remember (Sir) George Martin, the classical musician who engineered all the weird things the Beatles wanted to do. They would say "can we do this?" and he would say "we could try this": he never said "no". Thank god. Because he liked them, and they liked him. A match made in heaven and gradually being re-made there,
I woulda been blown away by the song in 1967 😳
This and Penny Lane were released as a Double A side single (45 rpm) record 10 months before Magical Mystery Tour album and TV special.
Cool Info 😎😎 Actual History in the making !
Twas my father's generation I wasn't even born.He was already an adult (mid '20s) having stepped out of his"Elvis era".I remember him telling me they were all 4 into drugs and LSD at the time while doing these late '60s kinda psychedelic recordings. It was a hype in the music scene for most artists to experience that kind of stuff.Especially in that "summer of love" era(1967) that everything was 'in full flower power'.For personal reasons I can relate more to their earlier stuff though.Michelle/And i love her/Something/ but also In my life/Long and widing road are my faves. My uncle was also that gen but a Mamas and Papas freak. He intoduced them to me and i got addicted.(Cass Elliot had some real strong "pipes" btw long before Adele and all others happened.)Nice to see you 2 again, i'm very oftenly aware of your reactions!
I love classic rock, in fact the mammas and pappas are one of my favs for sure. The 1960's must've been wild !! 😎
@@reactionextraction I'm more into American soft rock as i had also written in your Chicago "Stay the night" reaction comment section. The Mamas and Papas was mainly folky rock pop and sometimes '60s sunshine pop and psychedelia.I loved that bitter-sweet fragance in their music. And also loved their image. All shapes and sizes ha!ha!Michelle Phillips was for me, the one of the 3 most favourable blondes in the pop buisness!lol!
wow Ty is wearing a Hofbrauhaus Munich Jacket?? nice!!!
That’s what was great is the deep mixed instrumental
You cut the last part😉! Anyway I appreciated your reaction very much. This is one of my absolutely favourite song ever ❤. More Beatles and more Maneskin please 🙏
Yes I cut off the song, my mistake, thumbs down to me on that one for sure, Ha. Yes always more Beatles and Måneskin on the show 😎😎
song wasnt over
You should have listened to the mono. The Beatles were never involved in the stereo mixes only the mono. George Martin said " If you have never heard Pepper in mono then you haven't really heard it."
Great Comment. I wasn't aware the stereo mixes were so controversial. Next Beatles were going "Mono" 👍🏼
@@reactionextraction Also, The Beatles never really liked stereo. John Lennon used to wear a T shirt that said "I prefer it in mono" and when George was told that the albums would be released in stereo he said "Why bother?"
Come on Ty - you don´t look at your phone when someone´s talking about a Beatles song :D Also love the introduction - "I am Ty, this is dad".. hilarious :D Your reactions are greatly appreciated and I truly like the idea - both of you have to "suffer" so much.. but you´re doing a great job :)
Thank you and yes were bringing the "suffering" to the show sometimes, not always easy listening to another generations music, HA !! We appreciate the support !! 😎😎
LOVE your reactions, guys…..keep it up👍!
Thank you so much ... We appreciate that 😎😎
I guess it's a generational thing, but I think the more separation, the better. That's why they adapted stereophonic sound in the 30's.
I started college in 1970 and then had my first experience with marijuana. It was sweet and 'lifted' to an expanded level of consciousness. But the experience was not new because so much of the rock music of the late sixties was marijuana (and other) influenced. Listening to music like the Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and, most especially, the Beatles, took us to a wonderful new plane of existence! And Strawberry Fields was/is at the top of them all. - I still get high listening to it. 8^)
I'll say Hell Yeah to that !! 😎😎 ✌🏼✌🏼
You guys didn’t hear the entire song. It fades out and fades back in!
I know my bad, and on a Beatles tune ..... yikes ! thumbs down to me on that one 😳
The Beatles preferred the Mono mix over the stereo
Great song and agree the mix is not very subtle. Loved this song in the 90's when I discovered it. I love the the way the lines are spoken like reverse questions then statements..ok I can't explain what I mean very well 🤣
I gotcha, no worries, understood .... turns out I cut the song off a little early and am really hearing about it! Ha Dumb mistake on my part, yikes ..... and on a Beatles song too !
Most of the 2009 mixes suck! Always try to find the most updated mix for each Beatles song you react to.
Most boomers don't understand the importance of sound quality and good mixes. If the music isn't up to standard in this regard it is enough to put younger people off.
@@paulknight9998 yea dude. I’m 19 and I know this for a fact
@@paulknight9998 you have GOT to be joking.
No mention of the lyrics?
I know, read the lyrics as always before we filmed and then the convo went into another direction. Thumbs down to me on that one also.
Why did you stop the song before it was finished?
They did not have modern equipment. I believe they only had 4 tracks to work with. Considering what they had to work with. This is an engineering masterpiece.
Yes I cut this classic amazing song too early. Believe you me I'm definitely mad at myself for that one.
when the single Strawberry fields/Penny Lane came out- it was polarizing as it marked a significant change in the Beatles music and look. Watch the video in which clips of both songs were aired on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and listen to the kids reactions-the girls hated it-the guys loved it-both their "new" look and the song. Remember this was the FIRST time the Beatles were seen for over half a year when they were the mop-tops back in 1966. Again the Beatles were at the forefront of a major cultural shift.
Absolutely, great comments .... 😎😎 Important moment in the history of music I would think !!
Father is enthusiastic. Son is bored.
About the mix: Stereo was just invented and bands were experimenting with it.
I'm learning that the "MONO" mixes are the way to go with later Beatles .....
@@reactionextraction The Beatles tried Stereo but never loved it. George Martin - the Beatles' producer - said many many years later: 'Who has only listened to the Beatles in stereo does not know them. To know them means to listen to their mono recordings.' (Something like that - from memory)
It's a bit like black and white and color film. Has the color film devalued the black and white film? So did Stereo Mono devalue? Or perhaps both can stand side by side, as separate forms of expression?
They only got 1.5 % of sales but time in the studio was free
Missed the end, DANG!
I know I cut the song too early and screwed up. I made a huge mistake on that one. Thumbs down to me.
It isn't "panning"; it is how recordings were made. in order to "pan" a sound the sound must be recorded on at least two tracks. A centered vocal in a stereo recording is recorded to both left and right tracks.
You missed the ending ,as it comes back in ,do not forget elvis,as well.😄👍
Yes I cut it off too early, my bad ..... and on a Beatles song as well !! thumbs down to me on that one !
You didn't listen to the end, guys, it goes silent and then comes back in for a minute or so!!!!
I know my bad on that one .... and on a Beatles song, Yikes !!
Hi Ty ... the polarised mix you heard must have had something to do with the headphones? All we hear on RUclips is a magnificent blend just as it was intended to be, and no extremes from left to right at all. Try just listening - without headphones. I often don't like it when they do re-mixes and re-releases and stuff around with the original sound. P.S. I've only watched a few of your posts, but you don't always tell us if you've heard the songs you react to before, or is it the first time? I'm guessing that there are quite a few that Dad has heard but Ty hasn't? You need to tell us so we can more fully understand your reactions. Cheers Guys, Terry
Opps ha, we'll work on that , Cheers 😎😎
The Beatles enough said 🇺🇸🇬🇧✌️
Nothing beats the beatles
Song wasn’t over yet
This is from the "Sgt. Pepper's" sessions, and more time was put into this than any of the other songs.
Why didn't you play it through till the end??...You missed the fade out/ fade in......" Cranberry sauce....."
I cut off the song, my mistake and yes that's a big one to make on a Beatles song for sure !! Ha My Bad.....
@@reactionextraction ...if you ever react to their song " Helter Skelter", remember it also has a " false" fade out.
Thx! You might be interested in hearing this song in reverse!
They went to the park to 'Tune' a tree, as you do.
The extreme stereo was because the tape they had to use (the only available at the time) was only able to record 4 tracks in total. The equivalent of a tascam portastudio, the recorder that was used in bedroom studios in the 80s. In the 60s it was state of the art. The revers(ish) sounds were produced by a strange bit of kit called a mellotron which used tape loops for each key which were played by the key moving a tape head towards the moving tape loop to make the sound. Basically a very primitive sampler. Made some amazing sounds, but a fucking nightmare to play ❤️
To match the orchestration which turned out to be a quarter tone lower than John's original vocal take. Lennon, always being lazy about such things, did not want to re-record his vocals and told George Martin to fix it. When the orchestra comes in, They slowed the original down a bit drop the key a quarter tone and it gave a psychedelic sound. Lennon was happy he took off that day.
Awesome song, and anybody who tells me it is not about tripping on acid can eat their hat!
I think it would be interesting to hear what Ty has to say about something from the White Album. The songs are so varied that it would be hard to pick one. You could go with the opening track, "Back in the U.S.S.R." (which would be interesting to compare and contrast with "California Girls" by the Beach Boys). I think "Revolution 1" would be a good choice for both its lyrics and its music. You could pick up something a little more transgressive like "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" or "Happiness Is a Warm Gun." Then of course, there is the closing triptych, "Cry Baby Cry," "Revolution 9," and "Good Night" that I always think of as a single piece. My personal favorite is "Julia," but that may be because it almost gives you time to catch your breath at the midpoint of the album; I'm not going to recommend that one for this venue. You might have a good reason to pick something else entirely to showcase, which would be fine, too.
The white album is pretty Rad. I have the poster from inside the original white album release framed and up in the house, love it, lots of history 😎😎
- ""Cry Baby Cry," "Revolution 9," and "Good Night" that I always think of as a single piece". I like that thought.
You turned the song off early! What the heck...! Go back and listen.
The intro was cut off too. A lot is being missed here.
@@gregsug1640 such as the lyrics.
Yes I cut the song too early, I screwed up on that one ..... and on a Beatles song too, Dang thumbs down to me.
@@reactionextraction It's okay man, I appreciate you were in a hurry.I also like your honesty.
Too bad you didn't listen to the whole song. Strawberry Beatles Forever!
Yes my bad, I cut it off early ... and on a Beatles song, yikes to me on that one !!
This was ORIGINALLY a MONO single.
You cut off the fade in and then back out at the ending. This is a John Lennon song and "Strawberry Fields Forever"/ "Penny Lane" is still regarded as the greatest single in history. This song took 55 hours to record which is still a record for a song to this day. The technology wasn't there yet in 1967 for a song like this. The Beatles and their producer George Martin and the engineers at Abbey Road studios had to invent it as they went along. The Beatles are by far the most creative band in history and it ain't even close. What they accomplished in the studio between 1963-69 in just seven short years isn't going too happen again. This song is just as weird and wonderful now as it was back in 67 fifty five years ago. Check out the flip side, McCartney's "Penny Lane" there is no B-Side for this single as it was released as a double A-Side. ☮️✌️💕👌
Yes amazing song as is "Penny Lane" , Yep I screwed up and cut it off too early. Thumbs down to me on that one!
You didnt let it finish
They mixed 2 versions of the song. Not easy to do in those days. Not easy to do now! They were Way ahead of their time...and they had George Martin to produce. People had just started buying stereo players.. What more do you want from a band?? All over the place....I disagree.
The song was not finished!!!!
I can't believe you didn't listen to the whole damn song! Someone needs to be held responsible and severely punished. Probably the older fart. The kid is a little too smug. He's probably a Genius.
Hello, Yes I am the “older fart” who cut it off early, my bad on that one…. and on a Beatles song too!
Zeppelin was not around in 1967.
Correct Zeppelin's first album was released in 1969, my bad on that one.
Too bad you didn't hear the whole song.
Yes agreed, I cut off the song too early. I screwed up totally, major thumbs down to me on the one.
This was the "B"-side of "Penny Lane".
You guys need to listen to a better mix! The new mix is great! The remix from 2017 is great too! And listen to this song in Mono. Mono is what the Beatles felt was the important mix because that’s what almost everyone listened too.
Yes I'm learning the remastered Beatles is quite the controversial topic! Next Beatles song we do will be in "Mono" 👍🏼
@@reactionextraction , Drive My Car in Mono has a great mix. There isn’t that extreme left side and right side separation. Their first 4 albums and the singles, in England, singles generally didn’t come from an album, sound great in Mono.
Hey thx for the info, I appreciate that. I want to get it right so Ty can hear them at their best 👍🏼
ruclips.net/video/V_spPjaHQPs/видео.html
And listen to the whole thing as it fades out near the end and then comes back with the phrase “cranberry sauce” by John Lennon. Tree hat became part of the “Paul is dead” b.s. story. They heard “I buried Paul “ instead of cranberry sauce.
Where's the rest of the song?
I cut off the song, yes my mistake, and on a Beatles song also !! Yikes to me for that one !
Whoa, no coda?
Its a song that grows with multiple listens
You cut the song short. It's got a strange psychedelic encore!
yeah, that's my bad on that one. dumb mistake to make on my part !! 😳
You cut the song off before it ended.
Yes I cut the song off too early, my mistake and yes I'm hearing about it. I'm angry at myself for that one.
Led Zeppelin did not exist until 1969
Correct, Zeppelin's first album wasn't until 1969. I was wrong on that one.
Check out “Revolver “ album
My favorite album
So great
Why? You cut the ending part?
I’m not a fan of the fake stereo remixes, causes way too much separation.
Just my opinion.
But then I know every fucking note of the Beatles catalogue,I was 10 in ‘64,they exploded into everyone’s lives here in England then they conquered the world.
Nuff said,those who know….know.
Well Said 😎😎
They had four tracks at the time. This song is about John's childhood, and childhood psychological state.
All the jabber about "psychedelic" is 'way overblown, and typically by those who know nothing about it or psychedelics.
I took acid several times in those days, actually in the 70's, and I think some of the Beatle's later music resembled or complemented the trips quite well, with psychedelic themes connecting the experiences to the music.
@@kentclark6420 Read Lennon's comments about his childhood psychological experiences in his 1980 interview.
And that was decades before he did any drugs. It's about his childhood psychological state. In fact, if one focuses on one's own thinking process, one will see the vacillations, the constant and instantaneous corrections of errors, the recognitions of doubts and insecurities not yet resolved.
"I think I know, I mean, oh yes, but it's all wrong/That is I think it's not too bad".
Stream-of-consciousness.
@@jnagarya519 I don't see the connection between that and the psychedelic nature of the times in the late 60s and Beatle's music.
