I play P90s for the most part, but have always wanted a mini-humbucker loaded guitar. surprised to hear the P90s actually have a bigger and tighter bottom end than the minis here... cool demo - thanks as always and stay healthy Johan!
P90s are my favorite guitar pickup for everything. But I fully admit that there is something truly signature about a mini humbuckers and well-oiled, mechanical tone that just gives me the chills for rhythm playing
I’ve got two SG Specials, one with P90s & the other with mini-humbuckers. More beef from the P90s, more bite from the minis. Love ‘em both…same with the LPs here.
I like the way your channel always dials in the various Marshalls. Always nice and dry without a lot of fizz/distortion competing with the tone of the great instruments being plugged in.
never heard such a good demo of the mini humbuckers, here in the states a lot of people routed the Deluxe out and put in humbuckers, never understood why. The Pro Deluxe P90s are not too bad either they have a lot of punch when cranked up, I think I prefer the minis in this test, Thanks for this demo and playing by Simon! Stay safe guys
Maybe its coz some people dont even know that mini humbuckers exist and dont like the hum of singlecoils (which for me is no problem, for me its a charismatic hum, like some people like the constant sound of some car engines). Me personally i grew to like the sound of mini humbuckers more than the sound of regular humbucker
Mark I own 3..2 ebony and one wine red ..all I did was put a DiMarzios Super Distortion P 90s in it. Awesome thru Marshall's 50 watt 2x12 or a 100 4x12 ..my main guitars
The minis are very weak and there weren’t high gain amps back in the 70s. To top it off, most Les Pauls back then were made of concrete...weak pickups and dead wood ain’t fun. I guarantee that the gold top in this video is a lighter, more resonant one.
@@peacefulruler1 yea definitely, them Marshall's , hiwatts and laneys were so clean, the 70s were still stuck in archtops and ragtime, and all them les pauls were horrible due to the heavy mahogany (concrete) solid body's they had. randy Rhoades and Adam jones among many weren't using any damn 70s les pauls, not them horse crap les Paul's. i am amazed by the skills of this man. he is such a great player. i prefer the p90s. they feel better than mini humbuckers . p90s have the single coil feel and more sparkle. more fun to play.
I have a 72 Goldtop LP Deluxe with the original minis. They absolutely sing, have great clarity, overdrive well. To me they’re an awesome pickup. I’ve owned this guitar since 75, it’s not going anywhere but to my kids one day.
This is THE BEST comparison video I have seen. Thank you. I'm looking to splash out on an LP Gold Top and your video has helped me to decide...P90s for that authentic original 50s tone that offers clarity, depth and grit.
The mini humbucker in neck position on that 71` is just awsome. Cranked through an old JTM 45, - it`s just a perfect tone for the sweetest guitar solos.
Unfortunately not all mini HB’s were made the same. My understanding is that the early ones were Epiphone leftovers that were really good quality. Some time in the early 70’s Gibson began their production, and they were definitely less consistent. My 73’s stock pickups were incredibly microphonic and thin, swapped them out for late 60’s P90’s and fixed that right up.
The mini humbuckers are really underrated. I recently got a Les Paul Custom Robbie Krieger which has a Seymour Duncan in the neck, Gibson P90 in the Bridge. The mini is it. Thanx Johan for all your great work which i found just a few weeks ago. In the meantime i have watched ALL your videos!
For some reason, people have always tended to "underestimate" mini HBs. Great demo guys. Yes, I agree, P90/Mini could be a great combination depending on what you're playing!
I've got an axe loaded with a pair of mini's (Seymour Duncan SM3's). They offer a beautiful clarity on clean amp settings, great for finger picking. Raunch up real nice on gritty settings, great for R&R rhythm playing. Mini's serve it up very well, and none of the annoying hum issues.
I would love to hear these guitars through a Fender tweed late 50’s champ dimed out with some ambient reverb piled on separately. The spikey treble does something really cool when you layer it upon itself but dampen it out a bit.
Great video as always Johan. I have a '71 Deluxe and it's my go to guitar, the mini humbuckers take pedals really well and it also sounds great straight into my Marshall Vintage Modern (bought after seeing your video).
Thank you i always wanted to see this comparison because i have a 56 Gold Top with P90's and a Gold Top with Humbuckers 2008 , but i have always loved the Gold Deluxe with the mini humbuckers .. in fact i was looking into buying one now its always been the Holy Grail of Les Paul's to me other than the 56 P90.. but after watching this cause its been 25 years since i got my hands on one with the mini's ... i think i'm good lol i have 3 Les Pauls and a dozen Strats .. so i think i will take some time to thin the herd before i buy one . Great great video I own 79 les Paul deluxe but was lucky enough to dig for original 1960 mini PAF out of Epiphone sorrento and they sound totally different as they are built the same way as bigger PAF same components and enamel wire also they read above 7k another tech note they are nearly 2mm deeper than the 70s one ☝️
Both sound better IMO than a full sized humbucker. I have a newer LP deluxe that I prefer over a standard (Burstbucker pro) and traditional that I have. In fact, I am thinking about replacing the traditional 57s with HB sized p90s.
Kick-Ass playing Simon. Thanks again guys for an awesome demo! 🤘🏽 I have LP deluxe with mini humbuckers that I love, but man those P90's sound killer. I'm getting one...
P90s for the win but the mini humbuckers are cool too! They're even more single-coil like than a P90, it seems. Thanks for your excellent demonstration of their different tonal characters!
I have a 79. I can see how folks like the p90s but I prefer the almost sharp direct sound from the mini. Both great though. Can we all agree Les Pauls are the bees knees?
I love both situation, they have a distinctive character: P90's are brighter and with an attack that bites, mini humbuckers are fuller but they add a bit of "strat" sound to my ears :-) Thanks Johan for your very good videos, keep up your great work!

For the most part the mini humbuckers did it for me, "for the style of music played". The P90s were at times a bit too ... "in your face" ... but the dadgad kashmir, killer man, brilliant. Thank you.
When I bought my 1979 Gibson Les Paul deluxes back in 1980, I never looked back at selling the clanky ice picky strats that I had, a Gibson mini humbucker in the bridge position in a strat would be ideal. Those mini humbuckers are absolute magic, and no 60 cycle buzz.
I’ve a Japanese Epiphone LP Special with P90’s After playing a sunburst 1972 LP Deluxe a couple of years ago, I’d definitely opt for the Mini-HB sound. It’s brighter and tighter and definitely works wonders with my Sola Sound Tonebender fuzzes...🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I prefer the mini humbuckers . I really like Deluxes because they combine the fullness and warmth of a Les Paul with that extra quality of definition and bite that a Tele possesses .
Both are fantastic. The p90s are bigger sounding and have the single chirp sound. The minis are so tight sounding, I bet they work great with fuzz. Both is always best.
Luv P90s ...big fat, warm ..great presence, but the Mini Humbucker sure got is place low end that cuts though and super high end with a vibe all of its own...all easy to hear with great range of tones thanks to Simon..with few nods to Jimmy P ...coooooooooooooool

Love Kashmir ! cool Simon ! No problem with muddiness or over compression here. to bad we must play at micro volume levels in this day and age, but i refuse to get sentimental for the old days-because my ears are still ringing !
I don't play electric, but if I did, I would want P-90's in a Tele or a 335 style hollow body. I thought these sounded great Johan. I come for the amps lol! Another great video as always :-)
The P-90s sound really nice when run through clean. I prefer the mini-humbuckers on overdrive however - as I felt like there was much definition, especially when Simon was playing more than one string concurrently.
Both sound great, and expertly demonstrated...! Ideally I have always wanted P-90's in a Telecaster, more than a Les Paul. But I am very partial to the mini's in a Les Paul, Pete Townshend used them great a effect in the late 70's and that tone is true crash boom bang , though the Hiwatts to were crucial to the sound as well...
Both are great pickups but I preferred the mini-humbucker, somehow more mysterious and even more sensitive to picking, it seems. Though I'm a big fan of P90s as well.
Awsome video, Johan! So cool to see this compare. I have a mid 70`s Deluxe with Minis for my main guitar since about a year. It just plays and sounds killer. Actually I just went to the recording studio with it. I really don´t understand the bad reputation the Deluxes had over the years. I always loved them. Since I´m a big P-90 fan also - I was really curious if I would like the Pro better. But I think at least in this video I`m more into the sound of the Minis. Both guitars sound awsome, anyway ;-) Cheerz J.C. \\m//
The mini humbuckers sound suprisingly good...but I still prefer to p90s overall for tone. Great video as usual. ..oh and don't forget..that JCM800 plays a big part of the sound.
Thank you so much for the great sound samples. @Johan Segeborn can you tell me what riff he played starting @2:09? It sounds so familiar but I just can't put my finger on it. Greatly appreciate it.
I like both as they have their own characteristics but if I had to pick only one it would be p90's because they are less harsh and have more mids maybe? Mini's sound cool but can be harsh. I had a 72 les paul with mini's and I struggled to like them so I swapped them with Lollar P90's and I loved that guitar after that. I picked up a used 68 SG Melody maker that the guy put mini humbuckers from a 69 les paul into and the SG sounds great with the mini's. The SG is very woody and warm so the mini's aren't really that harsh in it. Nice combo. I love that guitar.
Both sounded good. I prefer the smoky quality of the P90, that rolls a bit of the top end off as opposed to the mini hums. I'd be happy to add both these guitars to my collection! I'd be interested to know if Simon prefers a Strat or a LP? His riffage always seems to perfectly suited to the sonics of the single coils. God bless and rock on bros.
@@simonkarlssonroxx7233 I could tell! Your playing is perfectly suited to a Strat. I love to hear you both play and give these amps and guitars a workout!
P90s for me.
No that the minis sounded bad but the P90s just had that chunky tone I prefer.
Nice to hear really great rock & roll playing without excessive gain and shredding!!!! Very refreshing
Can we just take a moment to appreciate this guys playing.....fella sure knows how to.
he made those guitars sweat
There is one answer: mini in the bridge, P90 in the neck.
Exactly what I did on my 2018 Classic.
Great idea!!!
@@100DollarHeadache how does that sound in the middle position? I'm guessing it dripping with sweetness
@@samfosdick9874 Really gives you the best of both worlds - the neck P-90's body and the bridge mini-hum's clarity. Sadly it does have the P-90's hum.

stepvan Joe hell’s yes! His tone is amazing. Tho he’s playing into a Fender combo IIRC
Mini's are my preference, but both LP's sound great in Simon's hands !!
That tone ! Jesus, both the p90s and minis sound fantastic. ,I’m preferring p90s slightly, though.
Surprised the mini humbuckers were so clean sounding... like they're underwound or lower output or something. Really nice bright tone
They are indeed lower output, they have less than 7k.
Both great, but I liked the minis best♥️👍 Nice stuff played very well👍♥️🙂 enjoyed very much
I like both as they have their own characteristics but if I had to pick only one it would be p90's because they are less harsh and have more mids maybe?
God bless and rock on bros.
jcoulter43 I’m a Strat-Man!
Thanks brother!
@@simonkarlssonroxx7233 I could tell! Your playing is perfectly suited to a Strat. I love to hear you both play and give these amps and guitars a workout!
