  • Off grid is a popular term these days. What does it really mean? For us, it means finding and cultivating deeper relationships with our environment. As Black homesteaders, we want to inspire others by showing you our adventures, mishaps, and successes since leaving the 9 to 5 life behind in DC.
We’re living off grid (ish) with our van and our tiny home log cabin on our solar and rain powered homestead in progress. We are a family of artists and herbalists learning as we go.
Be sure to follow along with our journey as we build our homestead from scratch.

In this video, we’re basking in the glow of neighbors supporting neighbors as we transport a gifted chicken coop and eat lunch with ‪@Robin.Greenfield‬ ! Help us decide about a new adventure, chickens or rabbits?

I haven’t raised rabbits, but I have chickens and love having fresh eggs on supply all the time

That does sound like a huge benefit. Leaning that way for sure. Feel free to share any tips for getting started 💚

I’d do a bit of each?

I agree! Both have such great benefits. Right now we’re still dealing with a lack of water. We’ll have to get that sorted before adding animals.

Chickens! Can't beat the daily dose of protein. We'll be making that move soon.

@@OffGridishHomestead Right on! I thought so. :) I am likely to be there. I'm based in hardcore suburbia (Roselle IL) but there's space here if you need it 💜

I'd go with those little quiet birds...I think someone had quail and they were absolutely awesome, and ducks are like all dark turkey meat and are so yummy, but I would avoid rabbits if rabbit starvation is a thing with domestic rabbits- (on wild rabbits, you will starve to death because they contain so little fat, and protein has no calories)...it's something I believed but didn't really understand until I took biochemistry. Also rabbits are just too cute and sweet. I would have a really really tough time eating and especially dispatching rabbits. Their fur is soft, but it's not that warm, and you would probably be warmer with duck down.

Hmm! That’s good info. Wasn’t thinking of the rabbits as a main food source. More for compost.

Obviously chickens. You shouldn't eat rodents
