I used to play at McNabb when I lived in Ottawa in the early 90s. many a great friday and saturday night with all the locals drinking,eating,playing hockey. Great times.
Awesome job guys. I got to play on several outdoor rinks as a youngster here in Michigan. At 63 I still love to skate and shoot the biscuit! My playing days have long since plated.
This is a very special view into what a community truly is. What is a community?? It is the very people that make it a place where life is lived long after one is gone the next continues the work that it takes to keep the traditions that built their perspective community to begin with if each of us put in an hour a week towards our community we would not have deterioration or loss of tradition! Each of these men are teaching us that incredible lesson! I am grateful to have stumbled upon such valuable insight!! Thank you !!
Awesome video! I'm browsing around on making a great rink and this gave me a few good tips. I am doing the community rink this winter for the first time and looking forward to it.
I grew up in Sudbury, where I was so Blessed to have an outdoor rink, at the end of our street - only 10 houses away from our place. I was on skates from the age of 5 and spent as many hours on the rink that I could handle. Of course after hours n hours on the ice, my feet would be so frozen that my Mom would warm them up and defrost them with an electric heating pad. Its probably a miracle that I didnt get frostbite, because I did this every day all winter long. I loved and craved being on the ice, I played playground hockey level until 16, but then was more interested in girls than hockey LOL ;-) I remember there used to be so many fun things for us to do, we played sports all year long. We had a very active neighbourhood with a lot of kids , just on our street alone, there had to be 50 + kids, our family alone had 7 siblings. Apparently they didn't believe in birth control back in the 50's n 60's, I guess thats why they called it the baby boom !!! It was the best childhood that any one could ever ask for. We had annual winter carnivals with hockey, broomball and ringette tournaments. My Dad actually was a coach for the women's ringette team as well he spent year after year maintaining the ice flooding, snow blowing, opening and closing the rink building through the 70's. I wouldn't change those days for anything else in the world and if I could, I would love to do it all over again. This video really brought back great memories of the rink days and tons and tons of snow and reminded me of those great memories. Because back in the 70's Dad used to spend countless hours volunteering to flood the ice and run the snow blowers. (He passed away with Alzheimer's just 10 yrs ago at 84yrs of age RIP Dad) He had a heart of gold and wore his heart on his sleeve and would give you the shirt off his back, He was always helping somebody with any type of problem they had. If you were stuck on the side of the road, we would stop to see if we could help them. Mom and Dad were strong believers in Christ Jesus and I know without a doubt that we will be reunited with Him and Mom again in Heaven. The day that my Father passed away, he told my cousin that his Guardian Angel had visited him the night before and the Angel told him that he was going home to be with our Lord the next day !!! And then Dad had passed away that very same day which he told this to my cousin. I thank God so much for knowing that an Angel had actually visited my Dad to put him on notice that he was going to Heaven, as that boosted my faith 10 fold, knowing that my Dad is definitely in Heaven Praise Jesus , Thank You Lord God Almighty. I dedicate this message to my Dad and can not wait to be reunited with my parents, friends and relatives who were believers.
You need hot water and a diy zamboni attached to the hose to resurface it'll save you alot of time... the hot water melt the bumps and refreeze smooth...
Although the hot water helps zambonis have an ice scraper that takes off a few millimetres of ice and the hot water comes after and freezes almost instantly.
Wait, this is on a cement or asphalt surface? unless your on grass why are you making a snow base? If you want you water to soak into your snow, don't use a loader for 4 hours tapering the snow, just use what a snow-thrower will spit out and then water that! It freezes so much faster and you really only need 1-2 inches.
i just wish hockey was as big in america as it is in canada, such a great sport
HockeyCrab Here in Minnesota, hockey is huge. We are the "State of Hockey!"
I live in LA, and there are more hockey players in LA than there are in Ottawa (because it's a much bigger city)
