During my dole days, at a Cardiacs gig in Liverpool,Mary the Irish dreadlocked merch girl traded me a copy of this 12" for the contents of my pocket.(approx £3.80). She also got me and a couple of mates onto the guest list in Manchester the following night. I played the e.p. when I got home and this song became an instant favourite. It sounded brilliant in Manchester. Thank you Mary 😊
"While Mother keepest watch while and weepest 'till memories crowd. And Father mourneth absence he burneth grief will cry aloud. And no-one lives the spores have landed there is no bright side. Silence is golden even my spirit sleeps in my open hands. Wettened every flap of England's flag proclaimed that all around are free and millions earthly joy remains. Fiery sparks, the eye of breaking hearts, producing to the mind in every shape and kind. Produce the mind. Had no idea, no-one did, make it quick, and I don't want to hurt, she us my witness. One more stab and it's back to the shop or leave as things are. Vain deceit of grief, show of unbelief, hope to blind and brief. Hide my beloved, death is passed, again no more to me. (Lyrics by Tim Smith and Christian Hayes)
Its euphoric indeed and I've cried a lot of tears after listening over and over at their material. Its a bit complex, but when breaking it, tears flow...
It is from 1991, yet it sounds more like something from their double album, Sing to God. The style of singing is silghtly different on Heaven Born and Ever Bright.
I wish they'd stuck to this sort of stuff, 'this is the life' etc.....the quirky stuff doesn't do their musical abilities justice and hard work to listen to for more than 20 seconds
I'd encourage you to just keep going back to those quirkier songs occasionally. Some of them are songs you need to "learn to listen to". For songs like that, it's OK not to get it the first time round. What you'll find happens if you just listen enough to the quirky songs you like best/ dislike least is that they become the ones that "last". For instance, if you listen to Faster Than Snakes With a Ball and a Chain once, there's a fair chance it'll be a bit much. Listen to it about 10 times, and you start knowing your way "through the game". You get out of "level 1", and move up to "level 10", in terms of knowing your way around the place. And at that point, you know the addictive parts to be ready for. The danger of this is that you might become obsessed, and keep listening to the song over and again. You might think that Tarred and Feathered is too quirky for that? Wrong. First hearing, and it's interestingly strange. 20th time round, and it's beautiful. Anyway, lucky you that there are some Cardiacs songs that you can enjoy, hey? It's a bit like joining the Illuminati. :-)
Its probably down to the style of music I prefer...'straight down the line' stuff..direct and to the point..the type of music when you know what you are getting after the first few bars.. I struggle with Genesis and Floyd for similar reasons..some tracks start off awesome..then bosh!, halfway through a change of tempo and 'weirdness' I find most of the bands stuff too off the wall, like the bonzo dog do da band on speed!...I just cant listen to it for more than a minute...but I will check out your recommendations, I am always open to expanding my eclectic catalog, ta@@sicko_the_ew
Just to add, I am forever picking through the bands stuff on here...theres a hook there somewhere obviously...one such hook is the production...incredible sound.@@sicko_the_ew
@@Lloyd1885 I actually sort of "get it". It seems pointless listening to something that doesn't appeal. I think it's quite normal to prefer the instantly appealing songs (like this one, which you've given me a nice excuse to listen to again, for which I'm grateful), and to even start to feel like life's too short to waste on the songs that "hide something" or go off chasing rabbits midway. However, tastes are something we're free to choose, and to adjust. To make the "long song adjustment", the trick is just to be patient. That's about it. Realise everyone gets question marks pouring out of their ears when the weird changes kick in the first time, so let those pass, and enjoy what's left to enjoy of the more accessible parts, that time round. And then one day some later "next time" your musical ear has quietly puzzled out the gem in the middle for you, and you (truly) hear it for the first time. If you wait long enough (and it's probably a matter more of patience than anything else) there's a reward worth having. (At least in the songs of a band like Cardiacs). But why be patient like this? Because once you've heard what was put in the song for your ear to puzzle out more slowly, for you, the weird song becomes the one with the extra layers. It doesn't wear out. The risk of immediate appeal is that such songs wear out more easily. Anyway, if I carry on like this, it's going to become badgering, so thanks for responding, and I hope you find you some great music today.
Every new find of these guys is like finding money. Brilliant infinity
That's such a good way of putting it.
@@bluehazeburnout cool name!!

The key change from the verse to the chorus is heavenly. It transports you to a better world.
Very much agreed!
It is definitely a jumping up and down and punching at the air moment for me.

This encapsulates how Cardiacs make me feel.
Hugely underrated this - you can get dizzy counting the bars
It's all or nothing with Cardiacs.

Awlays makes me cry this one at the most euphoric points
thank god another guy that cries when listening to great music. I cried during the whole Meshuggah concert in Bologna last autumn.
Its euphoric indeed and I've cried a lot of tears after listening over and over at their material. Its a bit complex, but when breaking it, tears flow...
I always get goosebumps when the outro starts with that wailing guitar around 4.15
Hox Vox haha meshuggah are fookin unreal ! Love it mate x
hugs
This tune just bit me. Simply incredible. Timmy you're the best!
he is.
period.
And to think it's so -seemingly- simple for his standards.
Oh Timmy, I miss you and feel empty knowing that you won't be gracing me with tunes that make my tummy go funny anymore. Love, me.

Yes. A rehearsal for the marvellous vocal recording/mixing on Sing...
All of their songs are my favorite song. Cardiacs CDs now available through their website. Support Tim and our Cardiacs family. BUY TONS OF STUFF.
Just bought all the CD's, now started buying all the other T-shirts, coffee-cups and +++... :)
Marvelous song. For me in the same league as "Is this the life?" and "Dirty boy".
This is toooooo magical I’m getting blown away 🤯
Muse have many thanks to give. And many royalties.
Amazing. Never heard this one before!
Genius
