  • Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton[2]) Airport (IATA: WSI) (also known as Western Sydney Airport or Badgerys Creek Airport) is a new international airport currently under construction within the suburb of Badgerys Creek, New South Wales, Australia.
The site was officially designated by the Federal Government on 15 April 2014, after decades of debate on the location of another airport within Greater Sydney. The airport is planned to have 24-hour and curfew-free operations and will supplement Kingsford Smith Airport, which has reached capacity due to a legislated curfew and flight caps.
The first stage of construction on the new airport began on 24 September 2018, and the first stage is expected to be complete and open by December 2026.
The Federal Government announced in February 1986 that Badgerys Creek had been chosen as the location for a second major airport for Sydney. The Federal Government then undertook a series of land acquisitions for the site, primarily during the period 1986 to 1991, and spent approximately A$170 million. The resulting site totalled 1,780 hectares (4,400 acres).
Despite the expansion, concerns remained that Kingsford Smith Airport would run out of capacity by 2030, especially since the introduction of strict night flying restrictions in 1995. Planning for a second airport thus began again in earnest in 2008. A 3,200-page joined Federal/NSW study released in 2012 concluded that Badgerys Creek was "clearly the best site for a much-needed second airport for Sydney" and recommended that planning should start. On 15 April 2014, the Federal Government announced that Badgerys Creek would be the site of the Second Sydney Airport. In September 2018, construction works began at the Badgerys Creek Airport site.
he airport's location is situated 44 kilometres (27 mi) west of the Sydney CBD and 41 km (25 mi) west of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. The site lies 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) south of the City of Penrith CBD and approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of the City of Campbelltown CBD. The Township of Luddenham is located adjacent to the airport, 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) from the runway. It is also located within 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) of the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park, sparking serious concerns about declared wilderness, wild rivers, amenities, World Heritage status, and the City of the Blue Mountains economy. The site is within the City of Liverpool local government area and consists of approximately 1,700 hectares (4,200 acres) of Commonwealth land that was acquired between 1986 and 1991.

As a new key gateway to Australia, we had the opportunity to build something special and iconic, instead we built a T-shaped box. I understand it's only half of the ultimate terminal, but compared to those in Asia and the Gulf it's undewhelming. Good video though.

Thanks for watching yes I'm thinking the same the more I'm looking at the terminal it is pretty plain design maybe it was a politician who designed it 😁

I agree, have been thinking the same. A rare and missed opportunity to build a stunning innovative and iconic design on a greenfield site.
While it will be new and relatively modern it is looking like a second tier provincial terminal in Europe or the US rather than a first tier global hub in Asia or the Gulf.

Early days yet. Look at from a hundred years in the future, It will grow ,expand and constantly be altered as has happened always with Mascot. What you see now I put down to affordability and being paid for by the tax payer . Future alterations will be paid for by the Airport profits if I am not wrong.

Bingo. Just said the same. Only 12 aerobridges so won’t take long to get congested. And notice the Metro station isn’t UNDER the terminal but almost 1/2 km back from the front of the terminal so a decent walk with luggage. You couldn’t make this bad planning up.

@xr6lad as capacity increases over the years I think you will see upgrades done to the terminal more bridges and directly into the terminal from the plane until than we just have to make the best of it I'm just looking forward to using this airport instead of Sydney/mascot so I'm happy overall if everyone starts picking out faults in every miss opportunity in our infrastructure we'll be all miserable let's all positive 😀

Best close ups so far. A little bit I have read regards photography, direct Sun light into the lens can damage your device.

So all that money. For only 12 aero bridges and a metro station not under the terminal conveniently for passengers but nearly half a km back across the car park from the terminal so a nice decent walk. Great planning. Seems we really hate learning from overseas.

You realise the metro station is being built equidistant from a set of terminals around it on three sides. The one under construction is only the first. Those are not aerobridges you can see, they are seven terminal projections each fitted with at least two aerobridges. Each of them can service either one A380 size aircraft, two 737 or A320 size aircraft, or up to four SAAB 340 / Dash 8 commuter aircraft.
