    I bought a Syncrowave 250 20 years ago to weld aluminum. All I ever have been able to do with it is make nice steel welds. My aluminum welding has been nothing but an exercise in frustration and failure. Until now! Your videos have been the magic bullet to getting things set up and cleaned up properly. I still suck but I`m now moving forward each day and feel like things are now coming together. Thank you!

    If anyone is interested in gas flow look up the difference between turbulent flow and laminar flow; gas lenses and cups help create laminar flow (w/o weld spatter on the inside of the cup) where as conventional collet bodies and cups (and when weld spatter is present on the inside of the cup) have a more turbulent flow. Thank you so much for making this video Dusty!

    • @PacificArcTigWelding
      @PacificArcTigWelding  4 года назад +1

      I usually always starts around %75 on the negative side, then depending on the job I’ll tweak it accordingly to what I’m trying to narrow down:) Glad you got some value from the vid! Cheers!

    • @Rollin8.0
      @Rollin8.0 4 года назад

      @@PacificArcTigWelding so with a positive setting of ~100 amps you'd go with ~75 for the negative? Seems weird that it's of any value to change the amps relative to one another when you can change the balance, which has kinda the same effect anyway.

    Just found you channel, SUBSCRIBED! Really appreciate you clear narration and video. And I was interested to see your use of an ADF attached to a phone to shoot the welding closeups. Still too much contrast to see the puddle clearly, but MUCH BETTER than what I've seen on many other welding videos. Thinking about learning to weld, and definitely would like to be able to weld aluminum eventually. So now I'm doing my homework to decide which welder to buy and am finding video like this that provide great instruction and tips. I'm not sure how long it would take to be able to make use of this videos information, but at least I'll have it for when I'm ready!
    I didn't find the music super distracting, my suggestion would be to lower the music volume more relative to the narration so it fades into the background during voice-over segments.

    I was wondering if you have a video on doing a outside corner joint with .060 with one of the pieces bent into a L facing inward. At work we have these aluminum boxes and the outside corner joints the top piece has a L shape flange. I'm having a hard time not burning threw at the end of the weld. Even when I'm running 75amps and letting the petal drop off where the puddle will freeze then remelt it dab then freeze it still tries to blow out.

    I have a question about your speed when welding aluminum. I've been following along and notice that you move pretty slow when making a pass. I would like to know your thoughts on doing it at this speed. I ask as I was 'taught' 15 or so years ago that you have to move very fast when welding aluminum. I'm starting to learn aluminum welding with my new Everlast machine so curious what your thoughts are on your travel speed and how that matters. Thanks!

    Also: Do you use 1/8” lanth mostly? I do. Even on thin aluminum It keeps me from sharpening and doesn’t erode as quickly like thinner 3/16”. It’s a really good tip !
    I didn’t think would have much impact on my welding but boy was I wrong.

  • @treyrags
    @treyrags 4 года назад +1

    What tungsten do you prefer on aluminum? I was welding 1/4" the last few days and having problems with my tungsten splitting around the ball. I've only had this problem above about 185A. I tried E3, 2% Lanthanated, and 2% Ceriated. I also tried slightly blunting the point and "pre-balling" on a thick chunk. The pre-balling helped, but it would still splinter eventually.

    • @PacificArcTigWelding
      @PacificArcTigWelding  4 года назад +1

      Ahhhh the old cracking tungsten mystery.... it’s a tough one to fix. Different alloys split and some dont- no rhyme or reason. I’ve found that running a more balled tungsten as well as adjusting slightly more or less + side of my balance will find a sweet spot. Slightly more + tends to help in my opinion, but obviously differs for different machines... I’d start with running a little more than usual and then back it off over time to where you see the cracks develop. Then you’ll tend to find that sweet spot:)

      @@PacificArcTigWelding good call. I had been floating between 30 and 35% EP but was afraid that going higher would actually put more "stress" on the tungsten. Yesterday I decided to just try 40% and voila, a nice stable ball!

    • @PacificArcTigWelding
      @PacificArcTigWelding  4 года назад +1

      @@treyrags Perfect. I usually try to push whatever tungsten as far into the positive as I can, before I see the "wobbling" or "fluttering" then will back off a touch and settle there. Like I said, settings are always different, and tungstens always perform differently. I like to help my students learn how to look for that sweet spot and dial it in, this way no matter what machine they're using they can usually dial it in to work pretty nice. Let me know how it goes! Cheers

    I have been a month into my tig welding at my new job. I weld .080 square tubing. What’s a good set up to make my welds look this good? And torch angle for a t-joint weld.

    • @PacificArcTigWelding
      @PacificArcTigWelding  4 года назад +1

      Hmm. Tough to answer with specifics. Square tube, it’ll be a real low setting, maybe 130-140 ? maybe a pulse set to like 100 or so pulse/second. A fast pulse will help to prevent overheating. As for the T fillet. Depends what position. I’d ballpark push angle of about 15-20degrees, and aim at the high side a touch:)
      Lemme know how it goes!

    Can this weld be tested with Radiography & Ultrasound. What should the settings for 1/2 “ thick AWS 1070 material & filler wire grade without compromising the chemical compatibility of AWS 1070 Aluminium.
    The videos is quite helpful as regards the setting of parameters.

    Hey man great video! Thanks! Can any TIG machine weld aluminum? I’m looking to buy my first TIG welder for both stee and aluminum, maybe just under a grand...any machine you think would be best?
    Thanks,

      Hey Adam! Not sure about under a grand, but both machines I use on my channel are pretty cheap compared to big brands and they rip aluminum. Decent bang for the buck for sure! Not all machines weld aluminum, check if you’d has an AC setting 🙏🍻

    Very nice bead young man! Obviously you have much practice at this. You make me want to start TIG welding again 😎👍
    Your machine seems to weld very nice and smooth, very nice super clean precise edits to your video as well. I can tell you’re really passionate and professional about everything you do.
    Question: About how much does this machine retail for? You are using a pedal correct?
    Thanks for your video, very cool, you ROCK!. ✌️😎👍
