  • Check out our longest winter camping trip ever. We spend 15 days alone in the backcountry of Quetico Provincial Park. We travel by snowshoe pulling heavy toboggans making camp each night in our hot tent. Our woodstove keeps us cozy and we share our passion for winter with our malamute puppy Lucy.
In Part 1 we head west on Pickerel Lake and are greeted with mild winter weather. Lucy learns a thing or two about ice travel and we overcome new challenges.

Love being out there as long as possible! Quetico is amazing for winter trips. She definitely knows the drill now. Thanks for watching Alan 🙂

Awesome video! I definitely like your tent setup. Working with a young dog has its challenges, but it sounds like you both are up to the challenge. Lucy's fall through the ice would scare me, too. Especially since we have had some weird weather this year. One good reason to maybe carry ice picks. But also it's good that 2 of you travel together as well as Lucy. Thanks for sharing your adventure! I'm looking forward to your next posting!

Hey Rick! Glad you enjoyed part one of this adventure, part two has some highlights as well! We are lucky that Lucy has taken to winter camping so easily and is not bothered by much. We are pretty confident with reading snow and ice and knowing what to avoid. Lucy's little feet punch threw a lot easier than us with our big snowshoes, but she is slowly learning what places to avoid on the ice. After that one incident with the otter holes we have watched her be more hesitant when sniffing/following otter tracks now. She's pretty smart! Thanks for following our adventures 🙂

Man I give you guys credit for moving camp every day in winter conditions. Lucy has grown into the perfect companion, she is beautiful. Looking forward to Part 2?

We've got a good packing system which makes moving easier but it's still a lot of work. Lucy is in her element on a winter trip and we really enjoy having her with us in the backcountry. Thanks for checking out the video!

No doubt who's more rugged. Lisa and I drive 22 hours south to escape the cold and you and Paige drive 22 hours northwest to seek out the cold! p.s. how the heck do otters punch through 12 inch thick ice?
    Keep adventuring (with Lucy)!

Hey Ian, ya it's been a pretty weak winter around our area. Quetico is a winter play ground and worth the drive! I think otters can keep holes open by continuously using them. Usually near rocky, shallow shores where the sun heats the rocks and raises the temps...especially with this mild winter. We had a Mink that was keeping a hole open near our dock well after the pond had already frozen over. Thanks for keeping up with adventures!

Hey guys! If it looks easy, we promise you it's not haha you know even at it's best winter camping always takes some effort. Part 2 is uploading as we speak and is coming soon! Turns out, there will even be a Part 3, we took way more footage in the second half of the trip. Thanks for checking out the vid!!

That would've been a scary situation, glad Lucy is ok. All that dog food really starts to add up on your long trips, I started to portion my dog's food by the day instead of big bags after finding out on day 14 that my scoops were not so accurate. Looking forward to part 2!

Yeah it was scary at the time but she was alright and learned from it. In hindsight, we were probably overfeeding Lucy on this trip. On trip we were more concerned about her having a full belly, especially during the second half of the trip when the temperatures dropped. Portioning per day sounds like a good idea too. Thanks Jay!

Great video! Did Lucy lose a booty when she fell though the ice? I love the wood crib built around the stove....great idea to keep melt to minimum! Cheers!

Hey Richard! Glad you enjoyed the videos part two will be coming soon. For some parts of the trip Lucy was only wearing one booty because she had a small cut on her foot from before the trip that was still healing. By the end of the trip it had almost fully healed! We tried bootying all her feet a few times but the style we had didnt stay on her front paws. Were going to try getting the simple kind that mushers use instead. Luckily her paws are pretty tough and she was ok without booties. Ya if we can't put boughs down to insulate the floor we make sure we have lots of wood stacked around. Thanks for watching!

BD gloves are great, have good dexterity, and are tough. When I worked ski patrol a lot of the patrollers wore their guide gloves. The dirt bag gloves are much cheaper though so I don't mind wearing them out processing with all the wood on a hot tent trip. Thanks for watching!

They are Steger Artic Mukluks. The best thing to wear when the weather is cold and dry. I would highly recommend, well worth the cost. Bought them from the website www.mukluks.com/Arctic/productinfo/AR+M/
