RL Romance has such strong memories for me and really captures the era. One of my best friends in high school wore it all the time and I'll always think of her when I smell it. I was always a Gap Dream kind of girl back in those days. The school hallways all had a sharp floral clouding them. By the time I got to college it was gourmands galore. Fragrance has fashion trends just as much as clothes, hair, and make-up, but with it being so closely tied to memory it is an even more powerful indicator of the times. As people get older they tend to gravitate towards the type of scents that were popular when they came of age, which is why there are a lot of heavy powdery florals that may be written off as "grandma" scents. Now 30 years out from the 90s I'm sure some of my younger coworkers may be thinking I smell very middle aged. LOL.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  3 года назад +1

That's so true! Fragrance definitely follows fashion, the trends are clear to see when you look back and try fragrances from particular eras. I am already struck by how 00s the fragrances that I wore in my 20s smell. When I went back home recently I retried a few things that I had sitting around back home from the 90s and I decided to use them up. I was struck by how heavy I felt a lot of even very teenage marketed, relatively cheap perfumes smelt.
I found RL Romance really distinctive. It's strangely light and almost aquatic feeling but also heavy and floral at the same time. Thanks so much for watching and for your really interesting comment!

I get soooo many compliments when I wear Calvin Klein Euphoria.
I’m 28 and EVERY time older women ask me what I’m wearing, they’re genuinely shocked that I’m wearing such an old perfume. They expect something newer and more niche.
There’s a reason that these perfumes have stood the test of time! They smell amazing. I LOVE romance and I loved the flankers even more, Tender Romance was my favorite but they discontinued it.

@@dr.claire.perfume Euphoria smells SO good about 10 min after spraying. It settles into a warm, comforting blanket. The orchid, lotus and violet are wrapped in the amber, musk and mahogany. And on my skin, the pomegranate comes through but in a warm, sensual way.
I’m hooked! I’ve gone through 5 bottles and it’s one of my fav cooler weather scents.
Louisiana gets HOT in the summer and humid and sticky, so I usually avoid warmer notes during the hotter months.

Hi Clair! Enjoyed your video very much! I used to have Eternity, a gift from my husband. That’s how I got a lot of my perfumes as he knows I am obsessed. 🙂I had to let go of it eventually. It was almost too much, very shrilly. And you described it so well! I am not sure if they’re 80s or 90s but I can definitely recommend Pleasures, J’adore, Organza, Amor Amor, and Amarige. I would say Pleasures and J’adore spoil easily, so better to buy a mini or something new or at a discount store. Amarige has a very distinct unique scent that can be an instant love or not. Organza is very beautiful but extremely potent. Small dose is heavenly though, at least to me. 🧴🥰🦋

I have j'adore, I actually technically decluttered it but my dad bought it for me so I kept the bottle and I occasionally respray it. The other day I wore it for the first time.since April and I actually enjoyed it... I filmed my entire collection video a few weeks ago and I am regretting what I say about j'adore now... My feelings towards it ebb and change!
I love tried amor amor too, I like that one! Pleasures I haven't tried, nor organza. I may have tried amarige but my memory is hazy of it so I will have to retry!
I know exactly what you mean about eternity, it almost hurts my teeth, shrilly is a good word for it. It definitely has something about it to make me want to retry it though!
Awwh! Husbands are great for that! Mine too has bought me a few perfumes. He's wise enough to know it's a winning present and that I always have a wish list! 🤣

I put it on whenever I am not sure what to wear. It’s luminous and sort of grounding at the same time. My husband also loves it on me. Strangely he doesn’t love the super sweet stuff that is so popular now. I really want to repurchase Organza. I had it a long time ago now. Happy Fall! 🍁💐🌾

My dad used to wear eternity, the man's version, it was his signature scent. I don't agree that carnations don't have any scent, at least in Greece they smell very sweet, heavy and deep but I actually like the smell of cloves, I even use them in my cooking. I haven't tried secret obsession but I wore the original obsession by Calvin Clein. To me it smelled like cinnamon which I adore but I remember one of my students asking me to open the windows because it seemed so heavy to him, covid free days obviously. To me a really 80s perfume is beautiful, by Estee Lauder, the original formulation. That's my definition of a beautifully made floral.

So everyone tells me! 😂 I only really smelt a powdery coolness from the ones that are here, but I never grew them so I've only smelt cut ones in shops. I'm warming a little to cloves in fragrance now, as long as it isn't too strong, it can be pleasant. I think eternity was popular with both genders, Calvin Klein had a massive hit with it. I've not tried the original obsession, nor beautiful. The only 80s perfume I ever had was le Jardin by Max factor when I was very small. I liked that one. My mum is a bit older than most mum's, she was 45 when she had me, so she wears rive gauche, I feel like I missed out on being exposed to many 80s fragrances... Love your eye look today, Claire. Very fall-inspired.
The notes you include in the description box are so cleverly written and cheeky. You're wonderful!
Yay Veronica and Gaby and Frances and Chantel and Paola! I love all those ladies!
"...patchouli...and the kitchen sink." Hee hee!!! I wore and/or smelled all of these before I knew there was such a thing as a "note," and I can't for the life of me reconcile my memory of Eternity with the notes listed. Cloves? Carnation? I just remember it being sweet in the background with something deep and something...80's? Eau de angst with just enough ennui to make it edgy?
"No, it's not a garlic clove. It's in this really hideous bottle..." Love it!!! I've not smelled the Obsessions flanker, but I'm intrigued.
I think that fragrances are like ideas; they have a moment in the collective consciousness if you will, and then things change and tastes evolve en masse and what was once popular becomes...well...poop. I don't think that's ALWAYS the case, but I do feel like there's something to be said for the fact that there are trends in perfumery that don't outlive the scents themselves, but there are people who outlive the trends? Or old souls who are still in the vibe of what once was? Like, that's only way I can really wrap my head around someone (anyone!) having any reaction other than nausea and horror to Shalimar and Samsara and Chanel No 5 and others of that ilk. Ick. Having said that, it's still a slice of olfactory history to smell these and to think, "Oh. This is what our "ancestors" smelled like when they were young." History of Scents should be an elective in high school or arts programs in post-secondary.
Thanks for the food for thought!

@@scentedsnowdrops it wasn't bad but I don't think I smelt the magic either 😂 but maybe it's different on a card to skin... I often think I don't like perfume much at all on card. I always prefer to test on skin.
Living on a farm 5 miles from the nearest small town definitely made me want to try living in a city. I went to uni in Nottingham first time around and that was a shock. Shottingham at the time, but I think it's a little better nowadays. LOL I love the way Banksy did that piece of art at the end of the exact road that I used to live on, clearly in my honour 😂. York seemed nice when I moved there but I only lived there for a few months and I didn't have any money so I felt like everything was for tourists and impractical and expensive. I never lived in Peterborough but working there was enough to experience it and that was definitely a no!

Oakmoss is the bitter, slightly green bit behind the rose. You will know it when you notice it, you can definitely smell it more in vintage bottles of Romance. I went and compared my bottle to a new one and I thought the formulation has been tweaked slightly. I checked Fragrantica and a few other people were saying the same thing, so I assume it's not just that my bottle is old, but that could also be the case!
