If I were FIA, I would try to entice Netflix to show WRC. Kinda like what Red Bull did, and maybe still does. 1 hour episodes that would show the highlights of the day, and then show the super special stages and the power stage live. That's what this series needs. New people excited of WRC and the people behind it. Like Colin!

I like the fact that the championship leaders have to clean the road. Makes the championship more interesting in a non-forced way. Kalle and Ogier managed to deal with it, so can everyone else. Regarding Sesks, it is not his pace vs the top drivers that impressed me most (road advantage), butr the pace difference vs Munster. Similar road position, same car, so much faster during the friday.

Colin-with respect to road position, could the FIA not do a lottery drawing before the start of each rally to determine the starting road position? At least it becomes a random process and gives the top drivers a chance for a better road position. Having championship leaders penalized on gravel events is not an incentive for the top drivers to push for wins in the earlier rounds of the season. Fans also deserve better. As always great commentary by you on these events-keep up the great work!

The WRC cannot allow Martins Sesks to slip though it's grasp. The promotor has to invest in Martins. F1 and WEC are seeing increased winners and interest. WRC is not, sadly it is 3rd in line and dyeing. 2 + 1/2 teams does not make a championship that sells.
I love rallying I watched Richard Burns win in 2001, Henri in 1980, those levels of excitement seem long gone.
Bottom line, the current rules "Do not work."

Hope to see you do more of these....as a huge rally enthusiast since I was a kid in the early 90s hooked by a peak era of Irish and British rallying, I've gone from never missing an event to sadly finding myself lacking the will to even watch a WRC rally since the sad loss of Craig Breen (something I thought I'd never say)......That sounds daft to say given you knew the guy on a personal level....but you're infectious energy and enthusiasm for the sport is needed now more than ever in the absence of shining lights like Breen and Block!

  • @tapio_m6861
    @tapio_m6861 Месяц назад +2

The problem for this year is that there are two part-timers that take advantage of the road position. But, true champions overcome such issues. Did Rovanperä or Ogier complain when they were leading the championship and had to do road sweeping. Absolutely. But did they still manage to do well and even win those events? Yes. For Neuville to complain that the road position is harming him is in truth him admitting that he might not be at the level that the champions of the past decade have been. He has had the better road position for years, now it's up to him to do that.
This current system is still great in that it is almost like a golf handicap that forces that fastest driver to overcome a tougher road position. If we were to go for a shakedown quali, which I believe Colin you suggested during this rally at some point, we would go back to time where the top guy would have a lot better road position and drive into the distance with their tail lights barely visible. I don't think that's good for the sport.
Now we have had Fourmaux finishing at the podium for multiple times and as much as I love Adrien (and I do love him, absolutely great character and has improved immensely!), those podiums have come partly because he has had a favorable road position on Friday which he then managed to defend. And those battles where a faster driver is charging against the slower underdog is exactly what we need! Not the time where the best driver would have the best road position and the rally would be over on Friday, barring technical issues. That's not exciting at all.

Great to have you back Colin when the WRC first started the running order was just like National rallies are seeded still today that was based on last year’s results so you won you were no 1 starter second number 2 starter and so on and at minute intervals on dusty events no complaints at starting first on the road .
Now Mr Neuville is complaining about part time drivers starting behind the championship position order but who started this idea it was his own team that started this he was very happy when it was helping him ,when he is been interviewed why does out ,and finally the power stage should be a stand alone event with everyone on new tires and not the results of the event and be for bonus points only.

The road position issues really shouldn't be that difficult to resolve in my mind. Here are a few ideas:
Option 1: you bring back the shakedown qualifier and then watch Munster open the road every rally.
Option 2: have drivers alternate on each stage just like at the Dakar (the most fair option imo and it would introduce some very cool strategy for each loop).
Option 3: have drivers alternate on each loop rather than each day.

At one time it was usually better to run first rally car on the road for dusty gravel or very wet world rally events. One of the keys is the time gap between the course car that runs last & first competition car and the amount of time the first rally car on the road can close to the course car on a stage. The first full day (usually the Friday) for world championship gravel rallies might be changed to allow reverse start order (based on points table) for the Rally1 cars (though inexperienced Rally1 drivers could start behind the regulars) as there are now more points able to be earned on the Sunday. I see it as there should be some benefits for leading the points table during the season. Other options could be a) Have 5 of the slower but experienced Rally 2 (non-wrc2 championship entrants) cars start in front of the Rally1 cars on Friday to reduce the amount of gravel even if the lines are not the same as the Rally1 cars b)or Have 2 loud Dakar V8 four drive vehicles with large tyres as sweepers behind the course cars on Friday.

I think the WRC should add a new championship alongside the two current championships (the driver championship and the teams championship). With the third being a true manufacturer championship which only includes the car makers, a bit like in sportscar racing, they should make it so only the points nominated cars from each team will score points with the top 4 or 5 cars of a certain car make counting towards this new manufacturer championship so manufacturers will be strongly incouraged to sell to privateers to increase the amount of cars in the championship which would help young drivers like sesks get a drive in a rally1 car imo

    - Second WRC event from Suninen: was in second place until the last day and was winning stages. Great performance from Sesks though.
    - I hate this misconception: Manufacturers dont join for the damn regulations. They join for the marketing potential, the regulations just have to allow them to promote something they are selling.
    - The road position debate was completely blown out of proportions and just reduced to talking about road position and Neuville complaining again while everyone ignores the tiny fact that I think 2 Rallies were won by regular drivers, the rest was part timers, when has that ever happened? That Neuville talked about this gets ignored completely. (I dont have a problem with this btw, but its understandable that manufacturers do)

There is no good solution on the running order but the problem is bigger in this year because cars are more reliable, not so many craches and competion is very thens.
Solution for the next year: qualifications for each rally or tarmac/gravel rallies need to be alternately.
Overall whats scrwes up WRC is dominance. Like Citreon days, like VW days and now Toyota.

I don't recall any of the legendary rally drivers of the last 50 Years complaining about road position. They understood that rallying is an off road sport. They could always go circuit racing! Sad state of WRC when a Retired 40 year old "part" time driver is 2nd in the standings after Finland and will most likely win the title.
Also Neuville still holds the lead despite winning only 1 rally this year.
Just shows how idiotic the current rules are and how weak the current drivers are that do the full season.
If I made the rules, I would have qualifying on Thursday on a short special stage....THE ONLY short stage in the entire rally.
Starting order for Friday are based on the results of the qualy.
Friday all times are reset and the Rally starts.
Plus cheaper Non Hybrid cars like what Martin Seeks drove in his first Rally...
Just Make it cheaper so that we get more private teams to compete in the top class and win rallies.
Rallies themself needs to be longer, back in the 90s they had more Stage km on Friday than we have now in the entire rally weekend.
Biggest issue these days is the service parks, it's all in one massive area, there is no need for those massive service parks, just a couple of trucks and vans and tents that can be moved from one location to the next during the day.
Pop up the tent and service the car and then move to the next location for next day.
Like they used to do in the good old days before it was ruined by morons running the sport.

OK, now I went thru video.
Tänak never recovered from his worst life decision, to leave Toyota. Last year M-Sport, he did not even try to take maximum out of car, as old Tänak did from any car, showing incredible times, no matter how bad car he was at any moment.
But current situation, you could say, Hyundai is bad, not even close to Toyota at moment. With good car, Tänak was able to win stages, no matter of starting position. Lappi proved that also, he was nowhere, despite good starting position. Probably still this Neuville-Tänak different car development directions = you will never catch Toyota. As long you do not focus on one and instead of trying to do multiple directiosn simultaneously, Hyundai never become best car.
But young promising drivers, all future top drivers has shown super speed in lower classes and winning there. All, Loeb, ROvanperä, Latvala, etc. they all were super fast and earned RC1 seat that way. Last decade or so, M-Sport money tactics, take some random youngsters into team, I never been fan of that, but it is partially understandable, when you have very tight budget.

    • @bett431
      @bett431 Месяц назад

I agree with the Ott/Neuville different directions development because last year Lappi, Neuville and even Sordo once talked about about setup preferences and how the current car was developed in a different direction in the past. And when they made new dampers with Lappi and had Neuville try his setup he was immediately good on fast rallies which were his Achilles heel for years. Neuville did have extra practice though, which he also didnt get this year thanks to Otts crash in Estonia.
