I think Mario uses triggers. It is not a sin, let's look back in time, vinnie Paul used triggers with the same technique. I think it makes more memorable the sound of the band on stage. Mario is great for sure.
@stonedav23 he uses them on bass only live, for better control of sound and aid in stamina, as he doesn't have to kick as hard to produce the correct tone. Can't blame the man he does like 50 minutes of double bass per show 😅
I don't get why the hate on triggers. I'm pretty sure he uses them live on the kicks, and also this isn't even that fast. No offense to Gojira, I love them but their modern material isn't the fastest, so you can't compare it to say archspire, or some other insanity like say lorna shore. It simply isn't feasible to play without triggers.
@@KytexEdits He has confirmed in interviews he uses triggers on kicks. I know people like to say mario is a purist but it's just not how it's done anymore. Edit: Whether or not he was using them in 2003, no idea. But as of Fortitude, for sure.
I don't think mario uses triggers, at least to double his subdivision. For tone, maybe. But not for performance... In more recent performances (2009+) you can actually tell that his double kick work is insane This guy is actually this good
Drummers (normally) don't use triggers to double notes. That's a common misconception. The old "they don't use triggers, they're just that good" Comment....drummers that use triggers need to be good and tight. Because they show any tiny mistake with a drummers playing and timing.
Drummers dont really use triggers to double the sound that often, maybe in some very extreme deathcore and stuff like that. They usually just use it for more consistent sound. The speed and precision still needs to be perfect. Mario uses them on kicks in certain venues when the kick cannot be mic'd well enough and he mixes that with the sound for microphones but he never doubles the notes. Everything you hear from him is played by him live. He practices only double kick for at least an hour a day and he never skips that. Hard work and talent, so triggers are not really needed, this guy is just this good. Usually mentioned as one of the best if not the best drummer in the world right now, along Danny Carey and Tomas Haake
I was lucky to attend this concert (2003 in my hometown Bordeaux). I don't think Mario was using triggers, however I think the whole mix was mastered off the console as this was a recording for their "The Link Alive" DVD. Regardless, this was one of my best live experience to date.
Hey Dave Quick Note: Their name originally was Godzilla but they ran into copyright issues so they changed it to Gojira A very fitting name considering how crushing the music is Thx
Hey hey Dave just going thru some old Gojira vids..Mario Duplantier has said in interviews that he used triggers on and off during his career but only in live sets for extra sound and power especially as the sizes of the rooms they were playing grew but not in this performance..He has also said he never "programmed" triggers to quote unquote cheat...In a very recent interview on a podcast Mario said at age 41 he still plays 2 hrs everyday 7 days a week INCLUDING the 2 hr live show every night... He's an alien on the kit...It took me a month and a half to nail the ending when they're all playing in lockstep 🤘
Gojira is where it’s at! So so mich to recommend, but i’d go with The Gift of Guilt or Explosia or Wisdom comes, all Live at Brixton Academy. Killer tracks just like 90% of their discography.
Comment #2. You started with an excellent song. There are a bunch of Gojira songs that also would have been great to start with. Their discography is incredible, variable, heavy as fuck, and melodic as needed. For me, the thing that separates Gojira from other (death metal-ish) bands is lyrical themes and content. Intelligent, passionate, vulnerable. I mean, some of their songs are love songs, if you take the time to parse the words.
My 1st exposure to Gojira also but have heard their name in passing and people were quite high with their praise and now I see why! Wow people like Mark Tremonti has talked about them in interviews that I've heard and can understand why. Like your reaction especially when you realized he wasn't using triggers to double up but was actually just that fast. Keep em coming.

My assessment of trigger using was that it was grounded on the fact that tuning two different drum bass heads it's almost impossible... but then I'm not a musician, let alone professional, Sensei Heretic. I don’t think Mario (drummer) uses triggers. I think he (or a drum tech?) mentioned he uses one for effect to add reverb/heaviness to the kick. Anyways great video! You should check out their song ‘The Art of Dying’ (studio version). It showcases how amazing the drummer is. And funnily enough they’re a french band with a Japanese band haha.
@@THEDavidHeretic Yeah they really are haha, they’re from Bayonne, France. I believe the live video here was filmed in a town, Bordeaux, which is near where the band was formed too.

Mere mortal’s legs would have fallen off halfway through the back half of the song)
Mario’s stamina is insane. You should watch the video about there pre show ritual, Mario’s warmups are an hour long and he does some pretty nutty stuff 😂 he also practices like if Kobe decided to play drums
The Link Alive was recorded in 2003 and Dimebag die in 2004. When Dimegad die, Gojira and other bands was a little more cautious with the fans on the stage.
Gojira stole my heart from the first listen. I love Heaviest Matter of the Universe, but my personal favorites are definitely Space Time, Embrace the World, Backbone, The Way of All Flesh, Liquid Fire, Only Pain and Into the Storm. Just wanted to say you are definitely the kind of metal head I aspire to be! If you or anyone else has a song to recommend please do! Trying to expand my horizons!
I was thinking it looks like he keeps the pedals half way pressed down just to keep the distance close but that constant pressure back is though. He fast in any case but I loved his beats and accents too which are just harder to do in fast pace sounds just putting in that rotating rest on the kick can be hard but he was great in that.
Gojira is an amazing band! There's not many song I don't like by them and that doesn't happen too often for me. For the next song, I think theres a lot I can suggest. The Gift of Guilt (Brixton Academy) The Way of All Flesh (Garorock Festival Marmande, France 2009) Flying Whales The Heaviest Matter in the Universe (Vieilles Charrues Festival 2010) Amazonia Silveria (Hellfest 2016) The Cell (live at Red Rocks 2017) Born for one Thing L'enfant Sauvage The Art of Dying (live at Vieilles Charrues Festival 2010) Pray (both studio and live at Red Rocks 2017). Listen to both cause the live version is the extended version, and its nearly twice as long, so its good to hear both so you see what they added and how different they sound. There's so many good songs in my opinion, but these were the top of my head.
Came from your AB playlist, saw a comment requesting for gojira, and clicked to have some change of sound. This is also similar to how i first listened to gojira -- saw a myles acoustic video where he was wearing a gohira shirt. Love these 2 bands 🖤 I love gojira's vocals. Melodic grit 🖤
My man, Mario doesn't use Triggers on his bass drum and can you even go faster than that. Check out his drumming on the video at Hell Fest live doing where dragons dwell..... he blazes double bass nearly 6 minutes Non-Stop and this known as a human metronome. He does 2 hours of fast double bass as practice everyday for his footwork and it's one of the best drummers on planet
I thought they were American. That's cool. Edit - LOL HAha just had to look it up because I thought you were kidding or one was born there and does the loin share of the writing but I was amazed they were French.

Mario does use triggers but that doesn’t mean anything triggers don’t make you drum faster that’s not how they work all the trigger does is change the sound of whatever it’s attached to that’s literally all it does
OH also, this is a pretty old recording, nowadays the lead singer is an AMAZING showman, he really gets the crowd involved especially performing "the chant" live. i experienced it all live recently myself and it was AMAZING.

Sometimes with those little concert rooms, they use triggers to ensure that the kick sounds clean and does not drown the sound into a mush. Mario is insanely good and that song is not that hard to pull off either on the drums
Dude. This is actually the best first listen. Because all the fans don’t like this album. And what’s sad to me. Their first two albums are my favorite work they have done. Mario does use triggers lmao so you were right in the beginning It’s not possible to be a faster drummer using triggers triggers I think you have a misconception about what triggers are you know they attach the the drum you can trigger your cymbals your toms your snare and your kick you can make your bass drum tighter and sharper to sound better while drumming fast acoustic non triggered drums sound too mushy but anyway triggers allow drummers to turn there kit into an electric kit basically while getting the real drum kit rebound and all that as 66samus video how triggers work triggers are not cheating because you still have to hit the drum the same amount of times as you hear you can’t be a faster drummer with triggers but what you can argue is that you can turn a triggers sensitivity and require less force for a hard sounding kick but very little drummers utilize that and even the ones like Aaron Kitcher the drummer for infant annihilator that do utilize that there’s still legit drummers that can use heel toe technique or any great single stroke drummer can still beat them and do 300+ bpm naturally hopefully this clears up the misconception
Your comment on triggers is a bit off. It's very very rare to find a drummer using triggers to double up notes. You're right about the sample itself keeping the sound consistent. But I think you're mistaking different pedal/foot techniques for some thing more artificial.
Alot of expectations here. The sound is good. If a song is 4x4 all 8 minutes and sounds good is that wrong. Love your reactions but overall i feel always like Gojira is in the mid section for alot of reactors. I dont get why cause i love their work.
