That's true. The Sony one was a self-pressed shot right? I like the Samsung's automatic motion detection but from what I see, the quality is quite the question. Then again, slow-mo is all about the fun.
Sony's slow-mo is still going to be hit or miss while S9 has AI-assisted motion prediction feature that cannot be found on this phone. Also increased resolution results in even shorter recording time as the sensor itself hasn't been changed, which means it is even more difficult to capture the exact moment you want to record. FHD 960fps slow-mo sounds cool on paper, but I'll take much more practical solution on Galaxy S9 over it any day.

Aria V. Jayarajasa Sony would succeed if they took advantage of the PSN. They should offer Vita and PSP games on the Sony phone exculsively . It should definitely be capable at this point as far as hardware is concerned. IDK I just like the idea of a phone for gamers like Razor came out with.
I think the idea was for Sony to get people excited for the (hopefully) more drastic design changes they'll add on the XZ3. It's not bad right now, but I think Sony deliberately gave themselves a lot of room in many areas so they can make something really original with the XZ3.
Sony really needs to review it's naming scheme, unless you're a die hard fan, there's no way of knowing which one is the top tier and which one is the latest!

the loop design was cool. i liked how it could stand up.(not useful but cool) not many phones have straight egdes like the sony phones. If they just put the front of this phone onto the old shell it would be perfect. I hate that Manufacturers only see what the media is saying about the design of the old phones yet the actual people that were buying the XZ1 were doing it because they liked the design. Sony didn't need to change it up, they were unique, but they had to listen to the stupid media guys that keep complaining about the old design.

This is my wife's phone since november 2019. Go it at a special sale from one of my country's cell carriers. Yes... inventory clearance. But you know what, she loves the thing. It's sturdy and very well made. It's on Android 10 with no 11 update coming, and it feels snappy like the first day. Still great battery life for a 3180 mAh battery. 18 months later, she has no intention to replace it.
Yeah. I have the XZ. It's a briliant device, and I was so excited for this release but I guess I'll jump ship to Samsung with the S9 when I get an upgrade in October.
I'm a die hard Samsung dude & my Note 8 is still flying with no issues(bought it day 1)but this phone here has me attention! The super slo-motion at 1080p shit even the S9 can't do that, & it plays/records up to 4k hdr are you freakin kidding me? Thats amazing! My only worry is no OIS so those beautiful photo's wont be steady & you can forget about low light, so hopfully they have the electronic stabilization(One Plus 5)but so far so good Sony!
Hardware wise Sony’s best Xperia doesn’t was the Z3, they just needed to eliminate the bezels. Not digging the design of the back, how low the camera and fingerprint sensor is, and how thick it sticks out

I'm genuinely excited for this one! Glad to see a rather competent smartphone from Sony that can trade blows with the competition ^^ Need to know the price of it though! I doubt it'll be in Oneplus territory, but I hope at the very least it's cheaper than the Galaxy Note and iPhone X ^^ And that camera's got stiff competition from the likes of Google, HTC, and Huawei! Can't wait for the full review! ^^
I don't know what's going anymore. Half of these features were in last year's XZ Premium, except that that phone had a better screen, a headphone jack and it didn't looked like shit. Sony could trade blows with anyone in the market in 2017 but nobody gave a damn about them.

I think what they offered last year was amazing, and though some people criticize the Xperia's design, I rather liked the refined look of that familiar rectangle ^^ I do miss that though, I like solid slabs rather than soft curved edges, but I'm in the less popular crowd I guess when it comes to that. Most people don't like sharp edges :-/ If Sony had kept that design while minimising bezels and keeping the front-facing speakers, I'd love that! ^^
TechPassion I don't think you're on a less popular crowd, most Xperia fans were asking for the same. The sharp edges of the OmniBalance design made these phones stand out and gave them very particular ergonomics that most of us got used to. Less bezels would have been great but they completely changed the design philosophy to one that I just can't support anymore. Guess I'll keep looking for a boxy bezeless flagship for this year :(
I like the look. If priced correctly then I would check it out. I love the functionality of the camera so can't wait to see how it works in real world use.
My very first Android was a Sony Xperia Z1. Haven’t been very moved by their subsequent releases these last 5 years. THIS, changes that. Finally, a Sony Android I’d consider buying again. The lack of OIS isn’t even a dealbreaker, seeing how well my former Google Pixel managed without it. Don’t fuck it up, Sony.
It kinda looks like HTC. I prefer if Sony just stick to their previous design but just make the display near bezel-less. It seems that they kinda overdone the design change because of too much noise that Sony kept the same design. For now, well see if they manage to stick with this new design or change it again for more Xperia-like design like it used to be for next flagship. The new design still looks nice I reckon, it just wasn't an expected aesthetic from Xperia.
It seems that alot of people (at least in tech bubble) kept echoing what other's opinions and too much following on pop trends instead of more objective approach. Sony seems to listen too much on the noise and didn't get what it really just need to change. I too do like the XZ1 looks despite not personally owning one, it was sleek and looks classy. The only that it needs changing are the top and bottom bezels. I even like the side fingerprint sensor, but I think there was the reason why it now moved on the back, seems related to why somehow US-versions don't get the fingerprint sensor activated. For now, we have to live with this design and hopefully will sell better and just make better changes next time. Though if it sells well, they they might just kept this new design anyways.
Well, from the front it looks far better and has a better shape than S9. I wish, though, that they had just kept a flat design on the back, since it was gorgeous.
Please reconsider your decision to ignore the Compact version. There don't seem to be too many compromises, and it's not as giant as any other modern flagships. Would like to hear your opinion, Michael!

I don't know what you guys are complaining about, the thing looks great. The camera location is great for photos because, it's centered and you'll never accidentally get your thumb on the lens. The fingerprint sensor is a shame, but if it means the US gets a working sensor then I have no problem with it. Why complain that it's bad because it doesn't look like a Sony? Remember when Samsung completely changed their design from the S5 to the S6? That made Samsungs not look like a Samsung, but it was still a better design. The only thing that will break this phone for me is the lack of a headphone jack, I'll be moving to Samsung if Sony doesn't come out with a good set of wireless headphones for sub 100
Edit: Sony has a multitude of wireless earbuds on the way. These new wireless headphones are unpriced as far as I can tell, but they will definitely be cheaper than the 1000x earbuds. Luckily, unlike apple. Sony has a number of solutions for the headphone jack. It's LDAC which supports near high resolution audio through bluetooth will pair amazingly with one of it's many "headsets", small boxes with a headphone jack, media controls, siri/google assistant, and sometimes even a selfie shutter. These start sub £50, and I wont be surprised if they're sub $50 too. You'll miss barely anything in audio quality, and you'll get arguably a neater wired headphone experience on top of that. Alternatively Sony also sells semi-wireless headphones at around $50. You'll also get a Y shaped adapter with the XZ2 that lets you use a 3.5mm jack and charge your phone at the same time. With so many ways to curb the lack of a headphone jack, I don't see any use in crying over spilt milk. As soon as Korean OEMs can bundle wireless headphones with their phones, I can bet you that they'll ditch the jack too.
Err no. The camera on the centre is meh. IPhone and old Sony camera position is good. It's back following the design and that design looks sinilar with Xperia neo V. I'm still not quite comfortable with that centre position but if they want to put it at the centre, at least put it a Lil bit up and put the sensor on the centre between camera and the fps. It would be look better than whatever ambient flow design term use on it.
sam m cant agree more huge top and side bezels for a 18:9 phone, the back with the cam and fp position looks horrendous, no headphone jack for a thick phone. Flop of 2018. Better stick to the XZ1 or XZ Premium.

I was really excited to see the new design and actually thinking about buying it. I think I'll keep my current phone for now. The curved back reminds me of the LG G4.
The design looks like and Htc u11 with a different camera placement. Now I kinda like the last design better. I guess I should wait for next year since all the major android flagships are a let-down
I'm actually more interested in the Compact more than the XZ2. It has a nostalgic design that reminded me of the most comfortable phone I've ever owned: the Xperia SP. The pillow back design and the fact that is isn't smooth glass like every other phone these days is a plus for me.

I think I can talk for most of the Sony fans here. We were fine with OmniBalance. The XA series has been loved by most and we wanted the same approach on the flagships, just with less bezels. I don't know why Sony should focus on casuals. They are so behind in the phone market that whatever they do nobody will care (people think the features on this phone are great when they were in last year's model).

Crimson Koba now i will say features of sony phones are like the best every time their phone has a feature which is first time in the world and then they pass it to samsung for next year.But like people were tiered of seeing the same dual shock controller with every ps model that classic boxy look of sony was also getting boaring.So like dual shock 4 a change was needed.

Maybe, just maybe, the design team that used to design the Sony Ericsson Xperias are gone. Still remember Sony used to put away lots of waves employees at one point? So maybe it's not that they don't want to, it's that they can't. Just a theory here. As fot the display, we should try it out first to see for ourselves. Since it's a slightly improved display from the XZ1, should be great. And btw, they are most probably keeping the AMOLED panel for the Pro/Premium 4K model
It's a fine phone, but there's nothing about it that makes me go "Now THAT feature is badass!" They need to add something like a wide angle camera a la LG, or an insane never before seen screen to body ratio, or some really good, innovative AI features, or just SOMETHING. They're on the right track for sure, but I think they need a little more time before this is truly a compelling option.
I'm using the Asian version of the XZ1 Compact, and with the exception of its hit-or-miss GPS, I'm mostly enjoying it, given the price (paid roughly $470). Which is not something I thought I'd say after years of using Nexus devices and stock Android. But now that they've decided to remove the headphone jack, I guess I'm parting ways with Sony as well.
I mean, it looks fine. I don't use my camera much so that's not a big draw for me, but battery life is a dealbreaker for me. All I want is a high end 16×9 phablet with a ~4000 mAh battery that I can buy in Sweden (for insurance reasons) or at least in Europe (for import fee reasons). I really don't understand why everyone's doing 18×9 displays!!

Sony was ma last android flagship before switching to iPhone and now I feel if they launch it with pride and hype maybe then I’ll think of buying it! And yes the fingerprint sensor placement seems little low but the design is definitely worth it!

Have you seen the rear design of the old Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V?
Still using an xperia z5 compact, works amazing and never lags.
Don't know the specs, but to me the Compact is prettier than the XZ2...
I guess Sony should change the position of the fingerprint scanner a little higher and kinda disappointed about the 3.5mm jack (lack thereof)...

I don't know what's going anymore. Half of these features were in last year's XZ Premium, except that that phone had a better screen, a headphone jack and it didn't looked like shit. Sony could trade blows with anyone in the market in 2017 but nobody gave a damn about them.

I cared about them! I think what they offered last year was amazing, and though some people criticize the Xperia's design, I rather liked the refined look of that familiar rectangle ^^ I do miss that though, I like solid slabs rather than soft curved edges, but I'm in the less popular crowd I guess when it comes to that. Most people don't like sharp edges :-/ If Sony had kept that design while minimising bezels and keeping the front-facing speakers, I'd love that! ^^
TechPassion I don't think you're on a less popular crowd, most Xperia fans were asking for the same. The sharp edges of the OmniBalance design made these phones stand out and gave them very particular ergonomics that most of us got used to. Less bezels would have been great but they completely changed the design philosophy to one that I just can't support anymore. Guess I'll keep looking for a boxy bezeless flagship for this year :(
I like the look. If priced correctly then I would check it out. I love the functionality of the camera so can't wait to see how it works in real world use.
Still waiting for that Xperia Z Ultra successor.... Probably will never happen, but I can dream.

My very first Android was a Sony Xperia Z1. Haven’t been very moved by their subsequent releases these last 5 years.
THIS, changes that. Finally, a Sony Android I’d consider buying again. The lack of OIS isn’t even a dealbreaker, seeing how well my former Google Pixel managed without it.

It kinda looks like HTC. I prefer if Sony just stick to their previous design but just make the display near bezel-less. It seems that they kinda overdone the design change because of too much noise that Sony kept the same design.
For now, well see if they manage to stick with this new design or change it again for more Xperia-like design like it used to be for next flagship. The new design still looks nice I reckon, it just wasn't an expected aesthetic from Xperia.
It seems that alot of people (at least in tech bubble) kept echoing what other's opinions and too much following on pop trends instead of more objective approach. Sony seems to listen too much on the noise and didn't get what it really just need to change. I too do like the XZ1 looks despite not personally owning one, it was sleek and looks classy. The only that it needs changing are the top and bottom bezels. I even like the side fingerprint sensor, but I think there was the reason why it now moved on the back, seems related to why somehow US-versions don't get the fingerprint sensor activated.
For now, we have to live with this design and hopefully will sell better and just make better changes next time. Though if it sells well, they they might just kept this new design anyways.
Finally Sony! It's good to see you trying to compete here in the US.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about, the thing looks great. The camera location is great for photos because, it's centered and you'll never accidentally get your thumb on the lens. The fingerprint sensor is a shame, but if it means the US gets a working sensor then I have no problem with it. Why complain that it's bad because it doesn't look like a Sony? Remember when Samsung completely changed their design from the S5 to the S6? That made Samsungs not look like a Samsung, but it was still a better design. The only thing that will break this phone for me is the lack of a headphone jack, I'll be moving to Samsung if Sony doesn't come out with a good set of wireless headphones for sub 100

Edit: Sony has a multitude of wireless earbuds on the way. These new wireless headphones are unpriced as far as I can tell, but they will definitely be cheaper than the 1000x earbuds. Luckily, unlike apple. Sony has a number of solutions for the headphone jack. It's LDAC which supports near high resolution audio through bluetooth will pair amazingly with one of it's many "headsets", small boxes with a headphone jack, media controls, siri/google assistant, and sometimes even a selfie shutter. These start sub £50, and I wont be surprised if they're sub $50 too. You'll miss barely anything in audio quality, and you'll get arguably a neater wired headphone experience on top of that. Alternatively Sony also sells semi-wireless headphones at around $50. You'll also get a Y shaped adapter with the XZ2 that lets you use a 3.5mm jack and charge your phone at the same time. With so many ways to curb the lack of a headphone jack, I don't see any use in crying over spilt milk. As soon as Korean OEMs can bundle wireless headphones with their phones, I can bet you that they'll ditch the jack too.
Err no. The camera on the centre is meh. IPhone and old Sony camera position is good. It's back following the design and that design looks sinilar with Xperia neo V. I'm still not quite comfortable with that centre position but if they want to put it at the centre, at least put it a Lil bit up and put the sensor on the centre between camera and the fps. It would be look better than whatever ambient flow design term use on it.

I'm actually more interested in the Compact more than the XZ2. It has a nostalgic design that reminded me of the most comfortable phone I've ever owned: the Xperia SP. The pillow back design and the fact that is isn't smooth glass like every other phone these days is a plus for me.

I think I can talk for most of the Sony fans here. We were fine with OmniBalance. The XA series has been loved by most and we wanted the same approach on the flagships, just with less bezels.
I don't know why Sony should focus on casuals. They are so behind in the phone market that whatever they do nobody will care (people think the features on this phone are great when they were in last year's model).

Crimson Koba now i will say features of sony phones are like the best every time their phone has a feature which is first time in the world and then they pass it to samsung for next year.But like people were tiered of seeing the same dual shock controller with every ps model that classic boxy look of sony was also getting boaring.So like dual shock 4 a change was needed.

Maybe, just maybe, the design team that used to design the Sony Ericsson Xperias are gone. Still remember Sony used to put away lots of waves employees at one point? So maybe it's not that they don't want to, it's that they can't. Just a theory here. As fot the display, we should try it out first to see for ourselves. Since it's a slightly improved display from the XZ1, should be great. And btw, they are most probably keeping the AMOLED panel for the Pro/Premium 4K model
It's nice though. Kinda looks like the Sony Ericsson Vivaz. Plus there's substantial upgrades under the hood. I'm sold.
It's a fine phone, but there's nothing about it that makes me go "Now THAT feature is badass!" They need to add something like a wide angle camera a la LG, or an insane never before seen screen to body ratio, or some really good, innovative AI features, or just SOMETHING. They're on the right track for sure, but I think they need a little more time before this is truly a compelling option.

I'm using the Asian version of the XZ1 Compact, and with the exception of its hit-or-miss GPS, I'm mostly enjoying it, given the price (paid roughly $470). Which is not something I thought I'd say after years of using Nexus devices and stock Android.
But now that they've decided to remove the headphone jack, I guess I'm parting ways with Sony as well.
I mean, it looks fine. I don't use my camera much so that's not a big draw for me, but battery life is a dealbreaker for me.
All I want is a high end 16×9 phablet with a ~4000 mAh battery that I can buy in Sweden (for insurance reasons) or at least in Europe (for import fee reasons). I really don't understand why everyone's doing 18×9 displays!!

Apart from the lack of headphone jack, I love the XZ2, especially its compact brother.
Sony was ma last android flagship before switching to iPhone and now I feel if they launch it with pride and hype maybe then I’ll think of buying it! And yes the fingerprint sensor placement seems little low but the design is definitely worth it!
