Here is a shocking example of what the Republican party has become. In Mar, 2019, a woman takes the stage at an event hosted by Steve Bannon and calls for a Trump dictatorship. “Never in my life did I think I would like to see a dictator,” the woman told the crowd. “But if there’s going to be one, I want it to be Trump.” Bannon then clapped and smiled. People who have seen this clip were shocked and appalled. Not only does the woman claim that she never thought she would agree with a dictatorship crushing the U.S., she fully supports the idea of Trump being that dictator, and single-handedly ruling over the nation. While the woman’s words alone should strike fear into your heart for the fate of our country, the audience’s response is the most telling. There was not a moment of concern on many of the attendees’ faces. Instead, many of the attendees, like Bannon, were grinning from ear to ear as they applauded the outrageous idea of elevating Trump to a dictator. The woman’s comment and the crowd’s reaction is a serious cause for concern. Why continue as a democracy when we can go the way of Russia&Venezuela? And these very same people have the audacity to call themselves "patriots."

"When misguided public opinion honors what is despicable and despises what is honorable, punishes virtue and rewards vice, encourages what is harmful and discourages what is useful, applauds false hood and smothers truth under indifference or insult, a nation turns its back on progress and can only be restored by the terrible lesson of catastrophe" - Frederic Bastiat
I recall Ron Reagan speaking up when he felt his father's administration was in the wrong, which impressed me. Now he speaks up when he finds that the Republican party has completely lost the thread. I appreciate that.

Thank you for bringing Ron Reagan to the table on this topic. Too many people in the U.S. have "re-worked" their own concept of Republican Party principles into a odd sort of acceptance of what has happened to their party in the last few decades. I grew up in a Republican household (during the 50s and 60s), and somewhere along the way "my party" left me. I didn't leave them. They left me. Almost overnight, I was voting Democrat - because that was the party that espoused my personal moral, and political, philosophies.
Thing is, given that Ron Reagan is and always has been a solid Democrat, his views don't likely echo those of his dad. It's sort of like interviewing Trump's niece to gage Trump but not quite as blatant.
@@gejost the thing is, just because he is a solid democrat, doesn't mean he can't make a point recognizing truths about his dad's politics and today's ridiculous Republican party.
I have no love for Ronald Reagan Sr. I hold him responsible for the closings of Publicly accessible and AFFORDABLE mental heath and drug rehab hospitals. Now...only the Wealthy among us...can afford to go into most of them. An average person has no affordable place to go to get CLEAN...or SANE. Most of us...cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars per day or per week...to "kick that dangerous and life-ending habit". Reagan Sr.'s War on Drugs has resulted in tens of thousands of people spending decades in prison...for possessing small amounts of CANNABIS for personal use. All because "Nancy" had a PRESCRIPTION drug problem...SHE COULD AFFORD TO GO TO REHAB FOR.

Stemming from the effort after the civil war to rewrite their history towards confederate narrative. It continues today, maybe this ideology was not at the forefront of Reagans Republican party but always did it exist. You're a history teacher, you of all people should know what a scumbag Reagan was. Don't you know about his little deal with Iran about the hostages back in the 80s, to prevent Jimmy Carter from being re-elected...... don't release the hostages before the election, Reagan will win and give you a better deal. Reagan forced the hostages to endure months of additional captivity, all to satiate his lust for power, the heartless, immoral and lawless behavior goes to how the Ronald Reagan we saw saw on TV wasn't the man himself but a character he played in politics and don't forget the Iran-Contra deal, he was also a racist.
The issue is, the son's political views differ significantly from his father's and the son has always favored the Democratic party. So, as a history teacher, you should consider the possibility that the son's views are extremely biased. I suspect Ronald Reagan would have issues with both parties today. I don't think he would buy into today's "wokeness". I don't think he'd like Trump.

We just want them to embrace the truth and hold the Republican party accountable for what they must do next to save our democracy and redeem themselves as proud Americans because we could surely use their passion and patriotism to help heal the country.
I guess I agree with you. There is a part of me that wants to see them admit they were wrong, just because they have been so disgusting in their support of him. So honestly, I would like to see them eat some humble pie (or at least apologize to the rest of us for what they have done). Still I don’t expect to see it. What I do expect (and hope) is that when Harris wins, a lot of the MAGA go back under the rocks they used to hide under, before racism was acceptable again. If the remaining Republicans have the balls to divorce themselves from Trump, and the MAGA voters they might be able to reform into a political party again with a platform other than to fully support the 1%. There are some conservative ideas that could resonate like less of the regulations that make it so hard to build affordable housing. But honestly I am not sure they even know their own values at this point.

Reagan broke laws with reckless abandon during his presidency. Iran Contra was not the only thing he should have been imprisoned for.

like saying the Civil War was just legitimate political discourse. The Republican party is patently absurd.
Today the Republican party is a seditious institution. The lawlessness we see in the Republican party today can be defined as institutional depravity. It isn’t an occasional failure to uphold norms and laws, but a consistent repudiation of them. It isn’t about dirty money so much as the pursuit and abuse of power-power as an end in itself, justifying almost any means.
Here is shocking example of what the Republican party has become.

As a history teacher and former Republican who campaigned and voted for Reagan twice it is fitting and honorable to look to a son to defend the truth of a father’s legacy. May such wisdom be heeded.
Thank you for the piece. Please continue such reporting from primary and reputable secondary sources.

As a Democrat, I always had much respect for Reagan and sincerely believe he helped in major ways to move the country forward. Additionally, he must have been an exceptionally good parent based on the non-biased, insightful comments of his son. What troubles me the most is that there have been so many good leaders in US history, from both sides of the aisle whose efforts are being diminished by the current GOP anti-Democratic agenda. This is much more than just sad- it's the greatest threat I have witnessed in my life.
He and his gay son didn't get along. He hated the fact that his son was speaking against him publicly. It is important to read history instead of making it up.
@@williamnaman3570 Check your sources. The reading I have done indicates the two had a good relationship. We don't need Trump supporters to be humiliated or admit they were wrong. They were played by the ultimate manipulater. We don't expect them to become supporters of the Democrat party either. We just want them to embrace the truth and hold the Republican party accountable for what they must do next to save our democracy and redeem themselves as proud Americans because we could surely use their passion and patriotism to help heal the country.

Still I don’t expect to see it. What I do expect (and hope) is that when Harris wins, a lot of the MAGA go back under the rocks they used to hide under, before racism was acceptable again.

what stalin did to his own people & those of the countries he illegally held all those years was no better than what Hitler did by raising the hitler youth at such a young age. stalin drove that same filthy rhetoric into many young people without any knowledge of what the west was really like, they were taught to hate & mistrust the west but should have been directing it at their own dictator. many did eventually after stalin made family members suffer in prison or simply killed them.
