To the point commentary as always. Thanks Jason.
I have tried most of the Balvenie expressions and totally agree with your "Return for your investment is lacking" assessment.
The 21 year old Portwood is the only bottling I still own and enjoy, but skyrocketing prices will more than likely prevent me from replacing that bottle as well.

Got one of these last year for $125. For that price it's just ok for me. The cask I got was not overly complex and had a lot of Ludens Cherry cough drops flavor and not much else. Actually I accidentally blended some of it with Bulliet cask strength batch 02 and that was quite good 😂🤣😆 In my market there are many better choices for the price. Cheers Jason

While I enjoy Balvenie products I haven’t actually been delighted by them … So, I completely get your rating for this. I do have a bottle of their 2002 Peat Week which I am yet to open.

One would think that they would give us correct and relevant information on all bottles. Nice review as always. Cheers. I hear the other day that most sherry seasoned casks are now American oak and no longer European oak.

European oak is harder to get, more expensive, harder to work with and more bitter than American white oak. Therefore very few distilleries can afford and dare to use European oak. Since 1986 virtualy every first-fill sherry cask used for whisky or other distilled spirit maturation has been seasoned per specification instead of being geniune cask used for sherry fermentation and trasportation. In 1986 Spain has put down a law that sherry has to be bottled in Spain only and nowadays wine is fermented in stainless steel containers with temperature control. That is the why sherry industry don't use any disposable casks which can be handed over to spirit producers and they are forced to either order seasoned casks or to buy used sherry casks which have been also ordered by another distillery in the firts place.

My bottle (Cask 9077/Bottle 3) seemed to have an overwhelming caramel cherry taste to it....not bad, but not great, and very well may have been an off cask. I'm not spending that much again to find out! Glendronach 12 delivers a better sherry experience IMO at almost half the price, albeit without the Single Barrel cache. From Balvenie, I prefer the 12 year Single Barrel (First Fill bourbon). I'm on my second one (Cask 11807/Bottle 157) and it's so much more interesting (and less expensive).
None of my bottles were 'hand numbered' even though they all say that on the outer cardboard tube. (P.S. When is the Dingle Core release review coming!?!?!)

My favourite balvenie is the 25 single barrel! I love it!

The only Balvenie I've had is the 14 yo Carribean Cask. Never found anything special about it. Not bad but very far from being great. The reason I have bought it was the half-decent presentation (43% abv) and half-reasonable price. Every other Balvenie I can put my hands on here in Bulgaria is either poorly presented at 40%, chill filtered and colored and/or ridiculously priced for what it is. The 15 yo Single Barrel goes for at least 125-130 euro which IMHO is plain ripoff. I know their 12 yo Double Wood is talked as one of the iconic "gateway" malts but I just didn't need any to convert me into whisky😀
In my book Balvenie is listed along with other offenders like Macallan and Dalmore who pump out tons of "super market" grade presented expressions at "premium" prices, hidden behind pathetic marketing blurb. Wish them good luck but for the time being I think I'll be perfectly fine without them.
    Cheers🙂

In the suburbs northwest of New York City the usual suspects get so much shelf space with the same entry level offerings it's quite sad. All liquor is sold in speciality shops.
Eventually you get to know the shops that show some interest in their inventory.
Through no particular influence I decided I was going to spend the big mont here and try this full sherry matured whisky. My usual shop was out of stock and I didn't realize it was within the core range so I grabbed the first one I saw and spent and extra 6 bucks for one of the most expensive 15 year olds, all while not liking the 12 double wood.
I'm not disappointed but I'm still not sure why they open themselves up to batch variation with "single barrel". Maybe that's why I was willing to pay more money.

First bottle I had you could taste the rum barrel, fantastic. Second bottle bought recently, tasted like bland scotch. I think they cut corners, it was definitely never in a rum barrel. Scumbags.
