  • After searching the internet for a long time I could not find much information on the break down, disassembling, and maintaining internally the Pioneer CDJ 3000. So, I made my own video for everybody to benefit.
It includes detailed information and specifics regarding the jog wheel, cleaning and maintaining, specifically cleaning dust in between the jog wheel screen and the clear plate on top. This video will guide you through all the steps needed to disassemble safely if followed step by step. The type of maintenance should be done every few years to keep the unit running in top shape and so they will last you a long time. Seeing as these units cost around $3000 each please be very careful. All the electronics and mechanisms are exact and tolerances are very high.
By watching this video you agree that I am not responsible for your equipment breaking due to watching my video.

Hey, I just wanted to drop a huge, serious thank you for making this vid. I bought 2 3000s in March this year and have been using them heavily all across Montana. But about 2 months ago, I noticed that the plastic jog wheel on one was heat warped. No clue how it happened, but thanks to your video, I was able to buy a replacement and fix it myself instead of sending it out and waiting more weeks. A couple parts and chips inside were actually different than the ones in your teardown, which was slightly confusing. The replacement jog wheel was only $60 so you saved me a bunch of money too. So again, thank you so much for making this and explaining everything as you went. Gonna subscribe and check out your mixes too, it’s the least I can do. ❤️‍🔥

Very helpful, mate. Many thanks from a fellow Torontonian..although I'm still here--once a Torontonian, always a Torontonian.
I am a little surprised that you prefer the RCA outputs from the CDJs because of their DAC quality. I agree that the converters are high end..same as the nexus2 versions.. So using them with a Xone or boutique analog mixers for example will always sound great...
But I disagree on not using the digital outputs when connecting to another Pioneer mixer with digital inputs..(also many other digital mixers like the Rane MP2015 which also have SPDIF inputs).
My rationale is that the conversion process, AD/DA is always going to be the weakest link in the signal chain. You're always going to lose resolution with every conversion. There is simply no way around this fact.. The amount of resolution you lose will vary depending on the quality of the hardware of course.. But you will always lose something. So the cardinal rule I learned of audio processing and signal chains is to avoid unnecessary conversions. And what's happening when you plug a CDJ using the RCA into a digital mixer is there's a conversion happening from digital to analog going to the mixer. Then the mixer is converting that analog back into digital to process it through its channel strip, and effects unit then at the end of the mixer, it converts it once again from digital back to analog and spits it out the XLR or RCA which then goes to your the sound system..
Ideally you want to keep it digital as long as possible which you CAN do as long as you using the SPDIF functionality. You could even keep that signal at the end of the mixer in the digital domain by using the digital master out or on some mixers there's an AES XLR out which would then go on to your sound system which assuming would have a loudspeaker management system using AES (professional) or SPDIF (for home consumer grade systems).
Moreover, if you keep that signal in the digital domain and you go into a modern digital mixer like the rain MP 2015 or any of the pioneer DJMs from the 900 up to the V10, It is impossible to clip the input stage of those mixers when keeping the signal in the digital domain. The mixers are processing the signal in 24-bit floating point DSP. It makes it impossible to flip.. not just hard to clip.. It makes it physically impossible to clip on those mixers. It's just math. You can still clip on the output stage because of course the mixer is doing the last D2A conversion... But of course you could always employ the peak limiters on the master and booth (which operate at 0 dBFS). The mixers signal path was engineered this way.. It is actually documented in the mixer manuals.
The A9 and V10 (as far as I know) process a digital signal using 32-bit floating points DSP.. A bit more advanced, it gives you more resolution with things like effects and time stretching aligning etc... But also impossible to clip the input stage. The clip lights will never illuminate with a purely digital signal. And the DAC on the A9 and V10 are so much better than the Nexus 2 mixers. As the sound guy, I have so much more headroom with those mixers than I do with the Nexus 2 and a hell of a lot more than the original djm900.
I mean the CDJ-3000s have a good DAC and If I was plugging that directly into my home hi-fi system, It probably will do circles around any of the audiophile grade DAC equipment I have. But if I was given the choice when plugging into a digital DJ mixer, I will always go digital..
But to your point, I did come across one rider for a pair of international touring DJs that specifically wanted their CDJs to use the RCA outputs into a V10 mixer. I regret not asking the DJ or tour managers for their reasoning behind that choice.. because every single sound tech I've spoken with about this have also scratched their head as to what possible advantage could be gained from adding an extra conversion just to transport the sound a couple of feet to the DJ mixer only to be re-converted to digital with obviously less resolution than the original.
And from what I've found out from a lot of these riders is that often the DJs or artists don't even know what's on them and it is the touring company that is just reusing a out of date writer from previous artists from years ago.. (one rider actually required a DJM 750...we couldn't accomodate that one. The DJ had to "make do" with the DJM 900 NXS2!

I use a Xone 96 m, pure analog. As to your comment it depends on the type of mixer and its specs. Some mixers have digital inputs then convert to analog through the signal path and back to digital. Other mixers take analog input and output digital at the end of the mixing stages. Some mixers accept digital input then convert back to analog, signal passes through the whole analog mixing stage and then back to digital on the master. Pick your poison. Either way the DACs on the 3000s are better than the V10s and color the sound in a way you might want to keep instead of using digital. My comment refers to most mixers DAVs being inferior so it’s better to use the analog signal path of the mixer with the superior sounding DAVs of the 3000. I hope this kind of answers your question. I appreciate very much your comment. Thank you for watching. It was hard work making this video. Please like and subscribe it would be highly appreciated. ❤

@ Plastic rollers are a type of bearing. The term is interchangeable. It’s a ring, the roller part, that bears a load or weight. Bearings aren’t necessarily made of metal even tho that’s probably your personal experience. If you want to get technical I supposed they should be called plastic or polyeurathane roller bearings. Or bearings for short 😊❤️ come to think of it you are probably accustomed with “ball bearings” which indeed in most applications are made out of a metal “ring” with metal balls inside. I have also seen them with ceramic balls inside however.
