About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

“Living gently on the land” is a great phrase.
It is and it's what we try to do here at Byther Farm too.
Living gently on the land. Love that.
Liz it’s incredible what she is doing for the young people
Really wonderful seeing people grow on hills! Love our Carmarthenshire hills but it’s sure another challenge.
Loved watching this... So inspiring. I will be keeping an eye out for Peni at seedy Saturday in Carmarthen on Saturday. What a fantastic place. Peni emparts her knowledge so well. True wealth can never be measured in money. Rich in wisdom, care and love of neighbours and community. Food security and abundance and the gift to teach and empower others. And doing it all treading so lightly on our Earth. Respect!
Yes, I love what they are doing at their smallholding!
This was the first I’ve heard of OPD, but I loved the story. Hope to hear more of this. Also, those Mustard leaves in the Polytunnel! 😮 Huge!
OPD is a wonderful scheme and is only available in Wales (I'm not sure if it happens anywhere else in the world). I've arranged to go back later in the year and film again and I've also booked to film at several other OPDs throughout the year - there will be more videos about OPD farms to see in the autumn.
Liz. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely ladys story with us.
You are so welcome, I plan to visit her again in the summer to have a look at it when the leaves are out and there is an abundance of food to see. 🌻
Amazing info!🥰 I'm just wondering why was your initial plan rejected and what amendments were made for the appeal??
Fascinating… feeling grateful for my land.
Glad you enjoyed it Josie 🌻
A beautiful lady in a beautiful garden......inspirational.
Hi Andy, I'm glad that you found this inspirational. I plan to share more stories like this over the coming months. 🌻
One Planet Development? Never heard of it, but it sounds good. I'll look it up
Wow! What a wonderful lady and amazing place she has.
a very nice garden. I am glad it is coming together for you and your family. Take care and keep on growing and planning, and expanding.
Now this is what I am talking about
Excellent share Liz. So much food for thought here
So glad that you liked it. 🌻
Thanks for sharing.. Caught you on a coffee break 👍🏻
Oh, well that was good timing!
That was so very interesting. Thanks Liz. Gosh I could aspire to that - just couldn't drag my husband with me!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🌻
That was fabulous, so so interesting...
Many thanks! Peni and her partner have worked so hard on their smallholding, it was a pleasure to share her story.
That is wonderful !!! Thanks for sharing/ I also grow almost all what I eat here in South India!
Your food forest is beautiful!
Thank you so much for sharing, great video, very informative! I am very curious why was your first project turned down and you had to appeal??? It seems like a wonderful concept. I am rather new to gardening, owing land, planning permissions and all that, and even though I know a bit about OPD, certainly not much, so sorry if this is a silly question...
Nice Video Liz, very informative and interesting how experience made changes to the layout and design of the beds.
Yes it is interesting to see the changes made. One of the things we've said so often is that the temporary nature of our fences used to allow us to make changes whenever we needed them.
@@LizZorabAfter 9 years I have altered a small area of my first allotment and it feels so good and refreshing to see it coming together. I now have two seedless grapevines on my south facing wall.
Awesome update my friend
Thanks for the visit

Love this video liz there place looks lovely 😍
It really is!
cracking video
Thank you Steven! How are you?
@@LizZorab ok thanks bad start to the year lets hope it get better my wife passed away at the start of feb
Are you saying that without help for planning, a couple wanting to move to wales to do this wouldn’t have much luck?
I don't think that is what Peni was saying, but it does take careful planning and organisation to make a successful application under the One Planet Development scheme. There are lots of OPD information days that may be worth a look at.
Fab! 💖😊💖
Thanks for watching and I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! 🌻
