For once, the algorithm showed me something relevant!
I just picked up one of these (different brand, but the exact same player) from a local Amazon return and resale shop, and I couldn't get the HDMI to work for some reason. AV worked, but the audio kept buzzing horribly. It took a bit of messing around, but it seems that it doesn't like HDMI cables that are too long: if the total length of the HDMI cable is longer than one meter, it won't display anything but a black screen (the monitor detects there's something coming in but nothing is displayed or heard.) A LOT of people had that problem on Amazon reviews, and I figured it out by pure chance.
I figured, at three dollars and fifty cents (American), it was worth the gamble. And it is. Now I have a mini player that can handle the few European discs I own.

Nice bit of kit. It's kind of a stand-alone version of the USB optical drive you can get for PCs. Personally, I have a mini-PC (Gigabyte Bric) attached to the TV which is my streaming media box. The once-in a while I want to watch a DVD, I just plug a USB one into that, and use that to then effectively pass through to the TV. I enjoy the odd DVD too..... The problem I generally have these days is that as very few people buy new DVDs, you rarely come across one that you haven't seen or want to see really...... So kinda reserved for the classics and the odd time one appears! Thanks for the review!
