  • In this video, I convert a 1970's toy Tonka Winnebago Indian camper RV motorhome to a remote controlled 4x4 rock crawler. I picked up the Tonka Winnebago on eBay as well as a used RC ECX Barrage 4x4 truck on eBay. I had to extend the wheelbase of the Barrage to fit the length of the motorhome. I made longer 4 link suspension links on my shop lathe. With the longer wheelbase, I had to get longer drive shafts and stiffer shocks, which I found on Amazon. I then installed some LED lights from an RC truck light kit on Amazon. Next I used some Tamiya Smoke paint for fake window tint and painted the under chassis with flat black. I made a fake exhaust pipe by using a tubing bender to bend some aluminum tubing I bought at Hobby Lobby. Then I modified a vape device by drilling a hole in the bottom and epoxying on a fish tank air pump. I then wired it all together with a battery and wireless on/off key fob I found on Amazon, to provide fake exhaust smoke. Lastly I got some bigger tires and some white wheels which I weathered a tiny bit with Vallejo umber pigment. I finished the RC Tonka expedition vehicle off with a trailer hitch and some scale rock band bumper stickers.

Sick, this is a great build I'm about to start a 1960 Tonka pickup. I want to set it up as a 2 wheel drive with all the lights and I am thinking air bags if not then I'll just have it sit low. I have a collection of a dozen or so full size (1/8 I believe is the correct term) and half dozen small trucks. There is one truck I have that is just begging to be converted, it already has the rat rod look and has a very cool stance and look. I want to convert it to rc and bag it ohhh yeah!!

Go onto a Facebook group for Tonka Winnebago. One of the guys makes and sells chassis for these. Expensive, but makes it easy.

Hmmm ... that looks like the Winnebago that TRG Restoration restored.

@@57moto59, it was just amusing that the next suggested video by RUclips’s algorithm was of TRG Restoration restoring the same model just a few months previously.

TRG restoration has done RC Tonka builds too. But his were utter crap compared with this build.
