"She's become the new standard for wizards." indeed. know what's wrong about most mages in anime? absolute majority of them are just like other characters, but use magic. so same hyperemotional deepshits are supposed to be almost entirely mindwork profession wich mage is? im not buying it, even slightly. but i belive Frieren is a mage, because she's what a mage should be like - calm, concentrated, smart, controled by mind not emotions, analyze things instead of going head on.

If this channel does a part 2 of this list Azusa Aizawa might be a good fit. She doesn't use magic a lot. But she makes up for it in other ways. She's from the series "I've Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years And Now I've Maxed Out My Level."

its not about popularity, Lina Inverse is there too, even if Slayers best days long gone. and Frieren is THE mage, you may not belive some charcters being a mage, because they don't look like someone who use thier brain, but you instantly belive Frieren is a mage. she's calm, smart, always thinks before act - the prorerties of a true mage, unlike some chars like Megumin for example, who's too emotional and doesn't act smart for a thinker a mage shold be.
Frieren is the very epitome of a mage, but dialed up. She uses her mind in tandem with others to defeat her own exact copy, thinks quickly, is subdued when she needs to be, and hungers for knowledge above everything else while allowing herself to engage with the playful beauty of mortality. She IS the mage.
well, that's why she's topp 1 here. take a side thier power and what left is thier mind, experience, personality, etc. and most of charcters in the list don't hold the competition for Frieren in that regard.
Natsu has a lot of fire Such as the fires of Igneel the Fire Dragon King, the fires of Atlas Flame the Inferno Dragon, the lightning of Laxus the Dragon Slayer, the golden fires of the End Demon, and the fires of Ignea the Fire Dragon God.

Explosion isn't the only spell Megumin knows how to use, it's just the only she wants to use. Also, you forgot about Wendelin Von Beno Baumeister from The 8th Son. Are You Kidding Me? as he's absolutely no joke when it comes to being a powerful mage.

I think Anos, Kumoko for So I'm a Spider, Lloyd from Reincarnated as 7th Prince, Touya from Reincarnated with my cell phone, Cain from Aristocrats Otherworldly Adventures, Yuji from My Isekai life deserve at least an honorable mention. There's a few more i can add (like Diablo and the rest of Primordials and true dragons are incredible at magic, better than Rimuru without Raphael) but thats what i can think of the top if my head.

she's the mage done right. also she's not OP for her world, top tier yes, but not OP. the problem of most mages in anime is that they don't look like they using thier brain much, so its hard to belive in them being mages. i mean, the magic meant to be something like science, you need knowledge and understanding ot use it, not just "say words and it will work", so mage should be at least kinda smart. like Megumin is a mage? she's dumb af, how the hell she's a mage? and the same goes to most of the list...
