Fee not free. But you're paying for the cloud storage. Ring only charge $3.00 a month and $30.00 a year. It can get pricey if you have more than one Ring product. But I think it caps off at $100.00 a year. No matter how many products you have. But if you don't want the cloud storage of the videos, it'll be free.
@@JamesHarris- Unless you allow for uploading of videos to a different cloud storage, like the Netatmo doorbell will do - allowing you to FTP video or save it to dropbox. There are controllers for those, but the controllers are pretty generic and only have a predefined set of effects and don't have any wireless connection. If you want to hook them up to make Automations, get a beefy 5V Power Supply, a ESP8266 and use Tasmota or ESPEasy as the firmware. It's amazing and already integrated at our home :)

Paying a subscription for your home appliances? Wtf! I am not especially interested in smart home things and just stumbled upon your video by chance. It is fascinating, but I think I would never buy any devices that only work well when you also pay a subscription for them like those smart locks. If this is the future, my home is going to stay off-line.
Do you have a TV? Computer with internet access? A cellphone? Take a closer look at all the subscription based devices you rely on every day. It is just something new that you are not used to paying for so it feels wrong to you but you do this every month.
+Gregor W. Sky thanks for watching and your comment. One thing I wasn't that clear on in the video is that the subscriptions are for cloud video storage for the cameras. Yes, one of the locks in the video did have a camera but all of the other smart locks don't require a subscription to use them. I'm with you on not wanting to pay a monthly fee for smart devices and almost all smart devices, lights, thermostats, locks, and some cameras including Wyze Cam and Arlo don't require a monthly fee.
I think the subscription is just for the ability to keep the recordings and store them in the cloud for you. I don't think its a requirement for the device to be functional. It just makes those specific devices also double as a security camera. All security cameras since they first had them always needed a way to store the data from the recorded videos because thats a LOT of data if you're literally recording all day every day. so stores and banks and crap like that have to pay for a security service too for this reason, even when they were recording on tapes. One of them seem to want to fix this issue by using a micro sd slot or something based on what he said... But yeah, pretty sure its totally optional. without that it just serves as a camera so you can see whats going on right now, but doesn't actually record it. I would have to imagine there should be an option to store the recordings locally too if you have the storage space... but idk enough about these to tell for sure.
As far as I remember the FIBARO stuff have drawn my attention this year. They design stuff that is ready to work with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa which is dope. They also create HomeKit versions of their smart devices.
not a fan of all the stuff based around a subscription, even if it is cheap. youde think the subscription would help reduce the cost of the products themselves though, but they dont.
