WOW! After watching all four parts I see how Biased this show was, Charlie Rose the supposed moderator starts to insert his opinion to debate Zappa and the news clips only support the idea of regulation. Frank is right, a responsible parent's best effort is to educate their children early with knowledge of the world. A healthy understanding of sex will not only aid them as an ethic for life decisions but to avoid becoming a victim of sexual abuse. Don't take Candy from strangers!
It amazes me how Frank and Candy are on different levels of this topic. Frank clearly explained that if children have an idea from their parents about sex, the BIOLOGICAL, PHYSICAL function, they can filter information about sex the music industry tries to shove down their throats. Candy sat there and repeatedly said that sex is bad, we should censor it. Well done.
P.S. If you want to hear Frank Zappa speak on the same topic(s) that are covered here, check out the Bill Roller interview (you can find it here on RUclips). He's in terrific form on that show, and lays out every argument beautifully.
Her closing arguments- 40 seconds. His closing arguments- 4 seconds. I’ll be able to quote his closing arguments, word for word, ten years from now. God damn he was such a great speaker!
After watching this, I have two things to say. First of all, you can tell Zappa was SERIOUSLY PISSED...I mean, they kept interrupting him when he had something to say...what the hell? I would get pissed too. Second, WHY THE HELL DOES CANDY KEEP COMING BACK TO PRINCE??? Morris Day, Darling Nikki, Sheena Easton... Prince is a genius!!! Leave him alone!!! Go attack someone else!!!! :\
If I were a kid watching this in 1985, I would have gotten an ear load of free lyrics and info from Candy. She probably screwed some kids head up more than if that kid had bought those records and innocently listened to them.
Mr Zappa, one of the past century's most brilliant orchestral and rock composers, Kandy Stroud, the wife of some Washington politician, hmm, I think I know who's opinion I'll respect and adhere to on the mater of music labeling/censorship.
Ah, that'll be the day, when everybody thinks for themselves and everybody has their own culture, philosophy, physical appearance, aesthetics, common sense, and everything else! And everybody wouldn't need a group to do their thing, they would just need their self! Ahh, yes, that'll be the day...
i firmly believe everybody has a right to have and state their opinion on something be it rock music pornography or even racist attitudes. but one does not have the right to impose their opinion whatever it may be on anyone else
Frank has been much more eloquent on this subject, but, as usual, he is the one voice of reason in the room. We have had 25 years of consumer labels and sex is still everywhere in music (if not even racier) and kids still gravitate toward it. Especially the repressed kids whose parents believe in abstinence-only education. The shift we need in American thought is this notion that a parent has the right to limit their kids' education - as though ignorance will protect them.
It's not about the lyrics. It's about control and keeping you docile and ignorant on the issues that really matter. The people in charge or who want to be in charge, don't have your best interests in mind.
I think Candy Stroud's opinion is "how dare you as an artist disagree with me and be so articulate about it and come out with better serious points than me." This is a paraphrased quote here, but I have seen this type of discussion so many times over the years. Coming from the UK, I can think of the Life of Brian controversy in 1979/80 and a very famous debate between Malcolm Muggeridge and The Bishop of Southwark with Michael Palin and John Cleese, where the Pythons made them look ridiculous.
The simplest way around the issue and to avoid censorship is for record shops to have some albums with an 18 sticker on it, just as DVDs have and some video games. If a minor wishes to have such an album he/she can always ask someone of age to go into the shop and get it. Otherwise being over 18 a person has the right to listen to whatever he/she likes. Where would the harm be in that? We can listen to Dynamo Hum at leisure then-:)
Zappa is completely right of course in his general sentiments about lyrical content and uptight, puritanical worries about what "bad" lyrics will do to children. But nothing that Stroud desired as pertaining to self-regulation is abjectly unreasonable. It's reasonable for parents to be able to have SOME idea of what's on the album before purchase. If this stuff begins with the parents, well, that's how parents do it - by knowing what their kids have.
my favorite record at 15 was 200 Motels. My mother should have been protected from buying it by a sticker? I'm sure she didn't get the jokes in it. We were at close quarters in those days and she did not notice a problem with my incessant playing of that ablum. I assure you the consequent effect on my behavior was tied to the musicianship not the somewhat prurient language regarding sex on it. I wasn't a virgin.

I understand what you're saying & agree, but I think 'patriot', which seems to be used an awful lot nowadays, is the wrong word, for a patriot is he who thinks "My country, right or wrong" & it's an obsolete & narrow-minded idea, especially today when everything in the world is interconnected. Besides Zappa criticized reactionary ideas wherever he found them, & if he talks about the US it's simply because he lived there. As Samuel Johnson said: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel"
@BillTurkeyburger In Britain a person cannot buy cigarettes until he/she is 18, as with alcohol. The under-age can always find a way round it, but it doesn't mean that the age restriction is a pointless obstacle. Likewise, someone under 18 cannot purchase a xxx porn video. Just because we cannot stop minors from coming across such things doesn't mean that some sort of age restriction is a waste of time. To have an 18 sticker on certain albums would silence the would-be censors
Well, I can see both sides of the story, actually. But the key is in NOT letting the govt. intercede beyond its protective / productive role. The govt. should't be dictating to us our preferences. That's the road to control via nationalism and soft-fascism. Zappa has spoken on this issue as well.
It's too bad that every time Frank made a point that destroyed their argument, the moderator would simply interrupt or talk over him so that the full and actual point couldn't be delivered to the audience.
Frank is the man. The bottom line is that he is right about educating your kids. If you dont teach them about a subject or whats out there, the kids will search it out for themselves. And someone else will teach them. Its every parents responsibility to teach their kids. The government cant step in and do it for them. And btw, 38 years later, I look back at myself buying music in 1985 as a 9 year old. I believe in 1986 the parental advisory sticker came out. All it did was suggest that something inside was edgey. And the court case against Judas Priest was the first and last time anyone was tried to be accountable for their freedom of speech. And look at the result. The parental advisory sticker helped sales. Looking back, this was just a big waste of everyones time and money. And who started it? People close to the government. Senators wives with nothing else to do. What a joke
this debate is as olde as the hills and it's our loss we are still going on with it. frank was a stallwart defender of common sense and basic human knowledge. Those who paint with lies and lies X 10 tot he googleplex, are sinners and we will suffer and so will they. Go for Joy jesus pagan freedom is the way nowadays
Another result of the "moral majority" victory is that we no longer have popular TV shows like this one. On the one extreme we have people talking about nothing at all (passing fashions and whatnot), and on the other shows like Jerry Springer where they don't really talk at all, but scream and grunt at each other. The conservative's platonic ideal has been made real in "pure-minded" infomercials vs. mindless shouting matches. Here are lyrics we should obey: "Come together right now...over me".
@NWG92 That's probably true. I'm just trying to focus on the arguments and the reality of how this all played out. The motivations of the participants are interesting, but not what I ultimately care about.
i dont think charlie was disrespectful at all. he made a valid contribution at 0:46 by saying wouldnt frank defend kandy's right to speak about whatever she believes in. i believe in the motto i may not agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it.. Frank's position is more logical to me and im sure frank is not attacking people like kandy. he just wants to make sure a voice of logic gets heard in the issue. ya?
Labeling records has actually made it EASIER to put out edgier material, which I'm sure puts a bug directly up Stroud's crotch, and was almost certainly the opposite of what she desired. So, ironically, the issue these two were on opposite sides over actually led to DECREASED censorship. Zappa's concerns were understandable, but he actually should have been the one in favor of labels.
I'm with Frank Zappa on the censorship issue, and I enjoy his music, but boy, if he could read some of these vulgar and self-righteous comments about miss Stroud. You can disagree with someone without resorting to juvenile personal attacks. Show some class.
how conservative charlie rose was then compared to now. he didnt want zappa to say much cause he wanted to make the controversy last as long as the newscast could carry it. iff this was on his pbs show he would give frank a lot more airtime to say what he wanted. anyway, frank made a fool out of this woman.
When I was a teenager, I listened to a band called Infinite Annihilator who had songs such as "Devotion to the Child Rape Syndicate", "Anal Prolapse Suffocation", "Pinned Down and Fisted", and many more outstanding numbers. My friends, I'm proud to say that I'm 29 now and I haven't raped a child, caused anal prolapse or any such thing, and I rather enjoy the idea of good ol' love-making. I'm not a happy guy but... well somehow I don't think Infant Annihilator had much influence on that.
Frank wasn't shown at his absolute argumentative best here. His responses and rebuttals sometimes steered a little off-course. "I like masturbation...!" 'Nothing to do with the question that was just asked. I think he was just... angry, and blowing his top a little. He was doing a circuit of TV shows at the time-all surrounding this topic-and meeting and debating with people just like Candy Stroud. Probably felt like he'd had more than a belly full by this time.
@MrPECKERHEADD You said so many ridiculous things...It's a hopeless cause to respond to you, so I'll just leave this quote of yours for others to see and realize what I realized about you just now. "The crime rate is decreasing, people are becoming free and open thinkers (more biased, actually), kids are safe, and we all feel comfortable walking down our streets alone at night. " Yikes.
stupid, If there was consumer labels..the kids would still buy the stuff, they bought it cause they liked it, enjoyed the escape, the excitement of a realm so liberating - not because they had no idea what they were buying initially. Kandy's argument ain't so sweet...
Stroud has said nothing about "God" or any sort of religious, conservative leaning DESPITE her viewpoints. Yet, Zappa keeps refering to her, essentially, as being a Bible-toting whiner. He's not debating Stroud in these clips, he's just spouting off against the government and the more political sense of the social environment at that time. Stroud, on the other hand, forgets that labels on cigarettes, age requirements on alcohol deal with physical damage, not mental. ..which is harder to prove.
No, she won the debate. She stuck to her arguments and Frank got fed up from some point onwards and refused to address her points seriously. To neutral and undecided observers she came off as being correct. Nothing to do with the actual validity of her arguments. (It was something like you just did, calling her names.)
@drugsnbeer Ultimately, though, I don't think Stroud or the PMRC or any of these people are really all that sincere about the whole censorship thing. Frank's right...it's all a publicity stunt. Generic, insignificant people with nothing important or new to do or say in the world take it upon themselves to try to change or end something simply so they can have their five minutes in the spotlight. These people want to feel like they've accomplished something with their lives, regardless of others.
this whole issue is so childish and idiotic. People need to grow up, and as frank said, EDUCATE their children instead of depriving them. Sexuality is an amazing human trait and should not be a made hidden or mysterious to young minds. That only creates confusion and ignorance.
Rest in peace, Frank. You are not forgotten.
WOW! brilliant closing statement by frank.
A warning. That's all he had to say after what he had already said.
Zappa was a serious man who made some of the wildest, strangest and most beautiful rock & roll ever.
Frank was the absolute definition of a true Patriot. Period. We need more like him.
What a fenomenal sense of humor Zappa has..he was amazing..
Well done.
God bless you Frank wherever you are. Freedom of speech, freedom of choice, freedom at last.
I was really glad I got to meet Frank. Ten minutes with him stuck in a hotel lobby door. He took it well.
Did u fart?
Charlie Rose calls the show "Nightwatch" at the very end.
Show's Nightmatch, Mr. Rose.
P.S. If you want to hear Frank Zappa speak on the same topic(s) that are covered here, check out the Bill Roller interview (you can find it here on RUclips). He's in terrific form on that show, and lays out every argument beautifully.

Frank Zappa is awesome!

This brings to mind something the late George Carlin said: "People are a lot stupider than we give them credit for".
Frank said it during the debate, these songs and most of the "pornographic" stuff that is still being put out for the masses today is purely 'product'
Poeticly said!
Smart man! to deal with those people and not explote, is something else....
Frank looks fucking pissed at the end. Goddamn.
Ah, that'll be the day, when everybody thinks for themselves and everybody has their own culture, philosophy, physical appearance, aesthetics, common sense, and everything else! And everybody wouldn't need a group to do their thing, they would just need their self! Ahh, yes, that'll be the day...
Loved this guy. We could use voice like his today
i firmly believe everybody has a right to have and state their opinion on something be it rock music pornography or even racist attitudes. but one does not have the right to impose their opinion whatever it may be on anyone else
@mrbrianmccarthy He probably felt the need to debate because the person he had on the show to debate Zappa could not adequately debate.
short but sweet. frank's sarcastic wit is unbeatable!!!

LOVE ZAPPA
It's not about the lyrics. It's about control and keeping you docile and ignorant on the issues that really matter. The people in charge or who want to be in charge, don't have your best interests in mind.
I noticed that too. He interrupted him and started talking extremely slow and dull, ending up killing Zappa's speach.
Candy Stroud--- "Stroud" is the name of an oldskool safety company that makes parachutes--- so does that mean she is an edible parachute?
On the contrary, Zappa was the conservative here. He wanted to uphold the First Amendment.
Freedom of speech should not be a problem for any ideology! Everyone should have have access to information
I think Candy Stroud's opinion is "how dare you as an artist disagree with me and be so articulate about it and come out with better serious points than me." This is a paraphrased quote here, but I have seen this type of discussion so many times over the years. Charlie Stroud disappointed me with his one-sided attitude in this debate.

constitutionalists rule, frank!if america lived up to it's constitution, they'd still be the greatest country in the world.by far.
@ThieleM
yeah it was like 2 on 1
my favorite record at 15 was 200 Motels. My mother should have been protected from buying it by a sticker? I'm sure she didn't get the jokes in it. We were at close quarters in those days and she did not notice a problem with my incessant playing of that ablum.

I don't think he did fight against anything or believed his effort makes the change. He just wanted to say "That's mistake." because he thought so.
@abbycat1965 Al wasn't part of the PMRC, Tipper was.

Charlie Rose needs to understand how a MODERATOR to a debate is supposed to act. His conduct in this debate was deplorable.
Well, I can see both sides of the story, actually. But the key is in NOT letting the govt. intercede beyond its protective / productive role. The govt. should't be dictating to us our preferences. That's the road to control via nationalism and soft-fascism. Zappa has spoken on this issue as well.

1:54 she's just thinking, "...I wonder what it's like on mars. There's probably no life up there.. What am I doing here again? Who am I?"
Candy,she was a fine girl.
She could get down wit de get down
All de way down.
She do your laundry. She change your tire. Chop a little wood for the fire! Poke it around, when it die down - oh yeah!

Good job Frank. I think you got under Charlie’s skin . Right on Mo Fo !
whew! am I the only one that got turned on hearing Stroud read those lyrics? hott!
Parents ducking their responsibilities.
Slayeeeerrrrr!!!!!
1:55 The curtain is pulled back on her THREAT! and we see what this is REALLY all leading to!
@NWG92 That's probably true. I'm just trying to focus on the arguments and the reality of how this all played out. The motivations of the participants are interesting, but not what I ultimately care about.
"Congress probably will do something about it because you can't trust them either. That's it..." - Priceless =D
Frank is just debating Mrs. Creamcheese in his mind
I have to agree with you. But it was two against one.
yeah the booz ads never came back either...
UK nanny state 2009, let's goooooooooooooo!
i dont think charlie was disrespectful at all. he made a valid contribution at 0:46 by saying wouldnt frank defend kandy's right to speak about whatever she believes in. i believe in the motto i may not agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it.. Frank is sadly missed he was a lion
She was wrong but she won the debate.
Charlie Rose of all people taking the moral side of the debate.
Exactly!
I think she needed to have a good lay. simple
lyrics on a record should be restricted is anologous to restricting harmful actual substances?
that's idiotic.
Labeling records has actually made it EASIER to put out edgier material, which I'm sure puts a bug directly up Stroud's crotch, and was almost certainly the opposite of what she desired. I love Zappa and totally agree with his message, but I don't think he handled the debate well.

@MrPECKERHEADD I agree
haha. Zappa's the man.
ZAPPA!!!!!
irregardless of the debate they were having i think its clear who was the smarter of the 2
Irregardless is not a legitimate word.
ahhahh nice point
@geitepung ..at least forgotten
@LionWarrior28 masturbation has been proven to be psychology stimulating, not just physically stimulating. It has to do with the release of chemicals
I agree, he was a genious.. But I think he would not think the same about you, commenting on her looks... Come on, how old are you..?
sorry, genius.. English is not my first language
" Yikes.
they thought they had a patsy........it was gonna be easy pwned by Zappa again...
Religious conservatives have so much fucking power in this country. :(
Charley Rose---so serious. Ha, ha! What a joke.
The funny thing is...he believed in the most high. But he didnt like christian veiws of it.
is she wearing yet another blue fart bag dress?
stupid,
If there was consumer labels..the kids would still buy the stuff, they bought it cause they liked it, enjoyed the escape, the excitement of a realm so liberating - not because they had no idea what they were buying initially.
Charlie Rose was a joke here
@pcarpanini When in reality they're not evil, just nonsense : )
this whole issue is so childish and idiotic. People need to grow up, and as frank said, EDUCATE their children instead of depriving them. Sexuality is an amazing human trait and should not be a made hidden or mysterious to young minds. That only creates confusion and ignorance.
