My only issue with the lates modelers is that these seem not to care much about the quality of effects other than drives, cabs and sometimes reverbs. The phaser on this unit was weird up to an hilarious point, the feel was quite “ artificial “ compared to drives, same thing with vibe and others you displayed here. I hope people like you that has closer feedback with the brand can make this of notice to them. It seems like no modeler out there has a proper sounding vibe. Other than that, seems like a great unit and you did a magnificent demo. Cheers!
Most people I know who own fractal/helix/any other modeler use outside effects. The main point is just to have every amp at your disposal for the price of one boutique amp.
What cabinet would you use on stage with a modeler like this that doesn't muddy the tone with its own pre amp? I have a Crate 50w that I use the 4 cable system to bypass the pre amp. Is like to simplify my setup.

Hey I’ve been battling this dilemma forever - would appreciate some advice! So I am both lead guitarist and lead singer in the band (I also play flute and a bit of sax) so my choices are between this and a Helix Floor. Obviously this has more DSP and as a new model coming out vs an aged flagship model this *should* sound better, but does the Vocal functionality of the Helix make it a better choice as in all-in-one (considering I could use the Helix to add Vocal Delay+Reverb for a flute solo) or should I be focusing on buying a dedicated guitar processor for my guitar and then leaving VocalFX management on the mixer? (Can I route Fractal to control my mixer’s mic effects via foot pedal? Or can I use a tablet or iPhone to wirelessly control my mixer via bluetooth? That would mean I basically supersede the vocal benefits of the Helix. Would appreciate some input as someone who gigs ~200-250x a year and is new to modeling but not performing
My big question about this and similar units is what to route them through in a small live setting. FRFR speaker? Can they give the thick thump of a 4x12? Maybe a small FRFR can give the cream of of Blackface combo? I must admit I'm dubious about FRFRs as I have no experience with them. Buy a solid state power amp to drive one or both of my 4x12s (stereo?) Use my Dual Recto as a power amp to drive a 4x12?
What you're hearing from any modeller is the 'recorded' amp - the same thing you would hear in a recording studio's control room. That 4x12 thump is SPL from the quad box; a FRFR like the Atomic CLRs can park you next to it, but if it's the thump you're looking for, the real thing could be the ticket for you.
Modelers are modeling miced up amps. Not the amps and the cabs alone in a room. Of course the modeler does not sound like the guitar cab in a room alone because it's not meant to. If you want the real experience of having a 4x12 cab in a room, you'd might as well buy the modeler and only use the preamp models in there and run it through like an external power amp or something and run that into a real 4x12 cab. But I dunno what small pubs or clubs would allow you to use a 4x12 cab now days though.
I have some Yamaha studio monitors for $200 at GC that sound great. I can also do a 4 cable method to my Kanata Amp- not a huge improvement but if I needed loud, it would be louder for sure. The DRUMS on my external Boss drum machine sound particularly clear (cymbals) and actually kick with my monitors. The woofer is only 5" I believe. You can get a A/B/Y pedal and connect two monitors and your amp. Now it's a party- just watch your ears. You don't want what I have.
Built in expression/volume pedals are always the biggest failure point in units like these. Helix LT is notorious for having terrible expression pedal issues. And as someone who never uses an expression pedal, I’m glad it doesn’t have one. I can always add one next to it if I need it.
Is this thing available in Europe yet? I can’t find one anywhere. Edited: join an email waiting list on their website?! Okay, so back to plan A, other floor multi fx.
Your patches always sound great, but what does it sound like through a power amp and cabinet?…Not mic’d and recorded and mixed, just a mic in the room…Thats the way most kids want to use it, and nobody ever demos these things that way.
@@cardbored_ thats why i use synergy preamp modules and power amp for distortion tones, and use the axe for fx and clean amp tones…thats the only way to make it work like a traditional tube amp
My Axe FX II feels like an amp when I run it through my Uberschall's 120W power section (tube buffered fx loop return), and it sounds amazing. I'm not sure why people think that these modelers can't work as preamps.
@@cardbored_ What makes you think a modeled miked up amps would sound like an amp alone in a room? They are modeling miked up amps, not amps in a room dummy. All you modeler haters don't know this simple fact and I get a good kick back whenever you all demonstrate your own ignorance like this. Or you can use just the preamp modeler in the modeler, run it through an external power amp, and run that into a real guitar cab so you get that amp in a room sound.
@@jorgemm1000 I don't have a bias either way, I don't have any of these, I'm just looking at potentially getting one so I've been watching lots of demos and comparisons recently but a trend I've noticed is being unimpressed with the Fractal products. The Helix seems to stand out over and over in reviews and direct comparisons. The thing I'm mostly interested in is the quality of the amp sounds without effects and this is where I keep feeling the Fractal products don't sounds as good as others but the Helix IMO keeps coming out on top. I have heard a few bands playing with Helix and Fractal products and must say I'm always impressed with the Helix in those. This FM9 unit looks impressive and is priced competitively so I Must say I kind of wanted it to stand out as better sounding. So far not impressed from the two videos I've watched.
@@theauthenticsteve Fractal has better sounds, If Brett just takes this pedal and tweaks it, It will sound better (Fractal is higher in terms of sound, and now they've add some footswitches and some DSP, I think Helix gotten Knocked out)
@@jorgemm1000 Your English is fine. I can only say what I think sounds better to my ears and of course it is subjective. But I have watched plenty of comparisons, not of Factory presets but of just amp models that I am interested in and often using the same IR with each device and to my ears the Fractal stuff just hasn't come out on top or even near the top as I expected. Additionally I thought Line6 stuff was meant to be inferior to the others so I was very surprise that in every comparison I always preferred the Helix and the order to my ears so far has been Helix, Kemper, Mooer and the Fractal, so I was really disappointed each time to see this happening. The reality is I have a lot of apprehension to paying so much for a Line6 product because I have never really considered them as a reliable brand or a brand associated with quality or worthey of a premium price. I tend to think of Line6 alongside Digitech and I've only had issues with Digitech reliability in the past and that has been a big factor in my apprehension in modelling tech at all alongside with the fact modelling tech doesn't hold it's value so ultimately seems far more expensive long term than analogue stuff. A few years back I would not have even considered Line6 and Fractal vs Line6 would have been a no brainer decision to me. The functionality of this unit exceeds my needs and desires so it's an understatement to say it looks like an awesome unit. But the reality is to my ears live and on RUclips the Helix has sounded better IMO than the Fractal stuff every time. Unfortunately the other reality is the Helix is already a couple of years old and the older it gets especially once Line6 bring out something new, it will be worth a lot less and I'm not really keen on entering the revolving door of upgrades and loss that is involved with digital modelling. Following on from that I'm kind of tempted to just buy older stuff that has already taken the massive value loss in the hope that it won't lose much more, as long as it keeps working until I upgrade again.
@@joshuabenton3785 nice!! Thank you. That’s what I thought, but I’ve seen a couple people say it’s bigger. Saw a pic of leon todd’s on Instagram and it was definitely the same as his fc12
There's too much learning the ropes. Plus $2500 US is @ minimum 100 cases of very high quality BEER which would last me a minimum of 400 Saturdays. Who's supposed to learn it, the soundman? Makes me appreciate the Thunderbolt's 2 knobs. My brain hurts Burgs.
Ha! It's in the factory presets - as are all the sounds in this vid. I think I ran Preset #008 - Plexi 50W for that one. I love the 70s Alice Cooper stuff. First (proper) gig I ever saw was the Welcome To My Nightmare show back in '76. Dick Wagner was a big influence on me.
Does everything except a really good Clean tube amp sound that breaths . . . I wish they would make the clean amp sounds much better as well as a much better compressor pedal Effect. No doubt they have the overdrive & distortion sounds just killer and well as all the other Fx. I spent a week with the AXE FXIII , never could get a clean amp sound I could live with.
Honestly can't say i'm impressed. Sounds basically like any other generic Amp Modeler out there. Except from Kemper with some aftermarket/captured amps or Quad Cortex if you really put the work in. These two sound miles better and more natural when it comes to amps, and Helix is the bomb when it comes to effects. The rest, FM9 included, sound pretty "digital", plasticky and unlike the real amps. Even the effects weren't on the level i would expect from a machine in this price range. Is it just me, or the Axe-FX III and even II sound miles better, although they should on paper sound the same as FM9? Or is it just the presets?
And god said let all in the city of rock have an FM9....and lo everyone sounded the same and everyone continued to stare at their smart devices........
The thing is, you hear its a fractal Just like you can hear its a Boss multi unit no matter how your setting are. I will stuck to my stompboxes, no one has the same pedals and pedal order like I have-)
Good monitors. I like the JBL's. Gives amazing stereo. If you have another amp laying around and a A/B/Y switch, your rockin. The real cab will give bass and punch- amp in the room feel that many FRFR lack. 4 cable method. FX Loop.
I really think Fractal should hire a more bold designer for the visual design of the pedal. I mean, it's art on the inside - why not make it art on the outside also. That would make it complete - just like an iMac for example.
If there’s one thing stopping me buying this it’s the foot switch screen design. Why aren’t the illuminated LCD read outs the same colour backlight as the switch colours? The RJM Mastermind nailed that colour functionality. It makes it look dated already with the blue backlight. Plus the lcd panels are half the size they could be.

Edited: join an email waiting list on their website?! Okay, so back to plan A, other floor multi fx.
the ultimate in FX
Your patches always sound great, but what does it sound like through a power amp and cabinet?…Not mic’d and recorded and mixed, just a mic in the room…Thats the way most kids want to use it, and nobody ever demos these things that way.
Because they don’t sound or more importantly, feel like real amps that way so the avoid.
@@cardbored_ thats why i use synergy preamp modules and power amp for distortion tones, and use the axe for fx and clean amp tones…thats the only way to make it work like a traditional tube amp
Buy a line 6 power cab.
My Axe FX II feels like an amp when I run it through my Uberschall's 120W power section (tube buffered fx loop return), and it sounds amazing. I'm not sure why people think that these modelers can't work as preamps.
@@cardbored_
What makes you think a modeled miked up amps would sound like an amp alone in a room?
They are modeling miked up amps, not amps in a room dummy.
All you modeler haters don't know this simple fact and I get a good kick back whenever you all demonstrate your own ignorance like this.
Or you can use just the preamp modeler in the modeler, run it through an external power amp, and run that into a real guitar cab so you get that amp in a room sound.
Can it replace my vintage Zoom 505?
Wow. I might have missed it but was there a movable send and return for bringing in other pedals?
I didn't see it either. Deal breaker if not.
Out / In 2 and 3 can be used as external effects loops.
Was the 'Eruption' preset factory? Sounded really good!
Yep. Straight out the box.
@@BrettKingman What is your take on a clip like this sounding amazing through a DAW but not translating to the same tone through high end FRFR's?
At bedroom levels what about at some stage db’s?
What about Axe FX 3....?.....I can't keep up?
I can't say the sound was very impressive in this demo.
Stock presets never sound fantastic !! (I think they sounded good to be factory)
@@theauthenticsteve Fractal has better sounds, If Brett just takes this pedal and tweaks it, It will sound better (Fractal is higher in terms of sound, and now they've add some footswitches and some DSP, I think Helix gotten Knocked out)
Fractal has the best modelling technology !! (Sorry for my english)
Sweeet! I’m hype for this. Same size as the FC12?
yup!
@@joshuabenton3785 nice!! Thank you. That’s what I thought, but I’ve seen a couple people say it’s bigger. Saw a pic of leon todd’s on Instagram and it was definitely the same as his fc12
@@EstebanOnGuitar ya same, then I saw a photo elsewhere and confirmed it was, in fact, the same shell.
Yes. Notice all are divisible by 3. FM3 FJ6 FJ12 FM9. That is because they ALL use footswitches that come 3 on a board.
Wow!
This and the Fryette powerstation...
Good afternoon. This can be connected to the Marshal amplifier
Of course no.

You could use an FRFR monitor speaker to monitor yourself.
I didn't see a price for the FM9 on the Fractal website. Wondering what the US price is? It does say you must be on the waiting list.
They put it in their forum, it’s $1599
@@clayton_jansen Thank's
I didn't see the thing even listed on the fractal site this morning.
❤❤❤
Finally.
SOLD ! take my money 😀👍
Me too
Holy Sh…………..!
What the Fuc*, just WoW!!!!
Wow
Where can I get your alice cooper preset
@@BrettKingman Nice I will have it then on my FM3
Does everything except a really good Clean tube amp sound that breaths . . . I wish they would make the clean amp sounds much better as well as a much better compressor pedal Effect. No doubt they have the overdrive & distortion sounds just killer and well as all the other Fx. I spent a week with the AXE FXIII , never could get a clean amp sound I could live with.
You are the only one Dave. Almost comical what you are saying. If you are that picky, get therapy.
More CPU?
Same than Axe Fx 3 !!
@@jorgemm1000 not the same, almost, but not, III got more CPU power
2x the CPU of FM3
Tone is killer- stop
Is the DSP the same as the-fm3? Or is it better than the axe effects lll? Please do a DSP test thank you! 😉
It has double the DSP of the FM3 which makes it about half as powerful as the Axe-Fx III.
More. More is more gooder.
I had to settle for the Mooer GE300
I like
Wow! Any price on the unit and when will They sell them in Europe?
$1599.99 USD. I don't know when they plan to ship to Europe. Contact G66 to see if they know.
I just got on the waitlist for the fm9 through g66, it’s going to be €1950.
Thanks guys! 🤗
And god said let all in the city of rock have an FM9....and lo everyone sounded the same and everyone continued to stare at their smart devices........
Helix killer
The thing is, you hear its a fractal Just like you can hear its a Boss multi unit no matter how your setting are. I will stuck to my stompboxes, no one has the same pedals and pedal order like I have-)
Anyone have a good FRFR recommendation for around $500-$600?
Good monitors. I like the JBL's. Gives amazing stereo. If you have another amp laying around and a A/B/Y switch, your rockin. The real cab will give bass and punch- amp in the room feel that many FRFR lack. 4 cable method. FX Loop.
Price ??????
$1599.99 USD
I really think Fractal should hire a more bold designer for the visual design of the pedal. I mean, it's art on the inside - why not make it art on the outside also. That would make it complete - just like an iMac for example.
I saw the memes with this thing :D thought it`s a joke, and then they released it XD Nice stuff!
this pisses me off, why didnt they just release this to begin with instead of the FM3?? the FM9 looks like the true successor to the AX8
Look there's roughly 65k subs here and if you all. Gave me 25 cents each I could get one these. Jeeves arrange the go fund me.
I liked no more mr nice guy
