I hear on the fear of not being able to achieve perfect finishes. It’s hard to have the patience to do so when there are so many other jobs to do. I think you have to just try and be forgiving to yourself. What will make you love that place is the memories you get to share in it with friends and family, not whether every corner of it looks as good as a professional finish or carefully styled shoot on Pinterest. From here, it looks like you are doing good, solid work and making a huge difference bringing that property back to life. I really admire your humility and humanity - those are good qualities to put into your house too. Good luck!

Hola Richard, another lovely video, and you definitely don't talk too much. We like seeing it all, the work, the chatting, the running about, everything, so don't try to change. As for the fireplace, lay the bricks flat, don't need a high hearth. We have very similar in this house, and it's perfect. Don't try to be too particular, it's a naturally beautiful, rustic house. The exposed brick wall is going to look lovely. Everything you do shows the pleasure your getting, even though it's hard work. We two years in with this property, many years older, not as fit, but love every minute. That glass of wine watching the sunset makes it all worthwhile. Love from our mountain in Spain ❤️

What beautiful countryside - it actually looks very similar (other than the ages of the homes, of course!) to Northern California when I was growing up and there were far fewer people in the state (only 7 million at that time). Great vid as usual, Richard. A nice relaxed pace and I enjoy your pondering and ramblings as you mentally sort things out in your mind. It's that spontaneous human touch again and we relate because we all do to some extent, or other :-)
The house is going to work out well; unassuming and unpretentious, but tasteful and homely, I imagine. Perfect! That said, onto the 'estate grounds'! :-) A little tweaking of the topography, some key structural planting and some simple hard landscaping to tie it all together and then suitably highlighted and edges softened with some interesting herbaceous planting. The whole will look awesome! 👍😀
Might I suggest you start keeping an eye out for trees and plants that catch your eye. Take a pic and note the time of year. Have a wander every now and then through garden centres, nurseries and public gardens. All will bring inspiration. Local advice on climate and heat and water stress tolerance will be invaluable and gardeners are always a nice, friendly and helpful bunch 😊
Don't forget tho': the more you have/own, the more it owns you! Keep it simple 👍😁
Keep up the good work, Richard, you're doing a great job.

Brings me back about 20 years when I was getting my bathroom done. Bought 16 boxes of tiles. Loaded them into the boot of my car, parked outside the block where I lived, then needed to get them a) from the boot into my block and onto the staircase, and b) up three storeys and into my flat, on my own. At the time, I almost had heart failure.....and I was in my early to mid-30s.....I needed a bit of a lie down afterwards. Good idea to get the stuff delivered Richard!

In the fireplace, instead of having a line of original stone vertically, how about putting a course or two of ordinary bricks with the old ones horizontally on the top as you're exposing brick on the wall it may tie it together, or render them before topping off. I like your new sawing horse by the way! 🤣

    • @RebeccaHarrington-lf2kx
      @RebeccaHarrington-lf2kx 4 месяца назад +2

Yes, I agree, horizontally placed tiles will visually tie in with the other bricks in the room and look more harmonious giving subtle repetition.

    • @adrianthorburn9872

With Italy having so many headline places to see and visit maybe it being away from the crowds is what makes it so special. I love it too. The little festivals that happen all over the place show the area is loved and the locals want to keep that going.

Love the blue tile color. Advice for the fireplace if you want it: use the firebricks you've kept for the inside of the fireplace and then put the tile for the raised part (apron) that extends from the fireplace. You would come out about 40 cm more or less. The tile and the firebricks should be level with each other. You'd have to build up under the tile to get them level. For a really professional look with the tile work you should get the trim pieces. Also, American country girl here, I'm glad you're enjoying country living.

Thanks for the tour of the area….would love to have a little place out there. Regarding your fireplace hearth… the old bricks look great, but being vertical looks a little incongruous to the rest of the house… I would try to use them horizontally.

I really enjoy your videos, for me they are credible, telling it like it is, doing up a house on your own in a foreign language. Don't worry its goi g to be great and i think the tree will grow back, nature is very resilent

Have heard of people using 'spirits of salts' to clean the cement of of the bricks, it's apparently cheap and works really well to get the cement colour off. Another great video, I like that you are tackling the outside when the temperature allows, it gives you a break and gets you outside. Great job with the plastering so far.👍

Stunning landscape. Just...where are the trees - the forests? The blue tiles looked really nice. I can kinda relate to your situation, as I just purchased a house that also needs a lot of loving care, though not as intense as yours. There was lots of junk, too. I hired a junk removal guy and it was a large cargo van and a huge trailer full of junk.

Hi @BlueAlgon There are large forests towards the lower hills and into the mountains. Plenty of open natural space in this region. Ancona head is a national park (I believe). Have a scoot around google earth and you will see plenty.😊

Hello Richard. Nice video. You are wearing the Azzurro t-shirt, just watching the uefa football game between Switzerland and Italy, so I guess now you are an Italian and shout for Italy 😂
I am very astonished about your camera equipment and drone etc. You manage everything and the videos very professional.
Did I miss your video about the new chimney on the roof? (Metall) What stove do you have inside?
Wishing you good luck as you move on. Thank you for showing me Marche when I cannot be there.

Hi again Richard thanks for the reply, loved the whole video especially the drone footage. Personally I think the bricks need cutting in half to lower the height in front of the fire place and go up on an angle at each side to meet the brick sides of the fireplace.I think the exposed brick on the outside would look nice the way it is maybe paint some clear brick liquid PVA or something to keep the dust down.Anyway excellent video love the house and I can see the potential and I can visualise what it will look like when it's done.

I was excited to see a new video yd and the brick wall looks great!
My son and I watched the giro d'italia a few weeks ago and tonight started the Tour de France (in Italy lol). I was wondering if you got to see any of either of those in person!!?? I keep watching for your town.

Hi @Frenchstarfish3 I did see the Giro but missed the Tour. This year has been badly managed with travel timing but next year I plan to travel around all the big events and fetsivals.
I'd love to catch a mountain stage on one of my journeys up/down one day.

I find making all the decisions myself means I get to the point where I can’t decide anything 😂. I go out and do gardening because I don’t have to think. I just weed and mow the lawn. No thoughts process. If my mind is too full I don’t get clarity. If that happens I just leave it for a few days and go back to it. Normally the decision is easy then.😊

those stones are beautiful and *rustic* and you did a good job on cutting them to size. Not sure about the vertical stacking. What’s about laying them horizontally and creating some sort of 2 steps? Painting the outside white would look great, but if you’re planning to have an open fireplace that would catch a lot of smoke and dust.
Like your style of video a lot, keep them coming!

If you bend the corner on the top left edge or corner where you pull over from on the trowel, it lets you get the cement or plaster smooth without the corner digging in.. a plasterer friend taught me that one 😊😉 Great stuff 😎

Hi Richard, stand the 2 bricks at the ends of the hearth, but lay the intervening bricks flat. They don't have to be perfect, that's part of the charm. Try a wire wheel on your drill for the brick wall, just hit the bricks or it may remove too much cement/lime? (beats a hammer and chisel) Anyway, keep trucking! Cheers from New Zealand.

It was by chance that I bought a bungalow. Every other house I viewed was a traditional style farmhouse with living space up stairs (most had the stairs outside of the building) and low ceiling rooms on the ground floor that used to house the animals and tools.
