Sting - A Thousand Years

  • A thousand years
A thousand years, a thousand more,
A thousand times a million doors to eternity
I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times
    An endless turning stairway climbs
    To a tower of souls
If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face
A million roads, a million fears
A million suns, ten million years of uncertainty
I could speak a million lies, a million songs,
A million rights, a million wrongs in this balance of time
But if there was a single truth, a single light
A single thought, a singular touch of grace
Then following this single point , this single flame,
The single haunted memory of your face
    I still love you
    I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
    Like galaxies in my head
I may be numberless, I may be innocent
I may know many things, I may be ignorant
Or I could ride with kings and conquer many lands
Or win this world at cards and let it slip my hands
I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times
Reborn as fortunes child to judge anothers crimes
Or wear this pilgrims cloak, or be a common thief
Ive kept this single faith, I have but one belief
    I still love you
    I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
    Like galaxies in my head
On and on the mysteries unwind themselves
    Eternities still unsaid
    til you love me

The production and sound is brilliant. So is Sting.
It's a great album. His blending of sounds are unique.
The song is a bit magical and haunting.
It's different from anything else he ever did.
I can only compare it to some tunes on Peter Gabriel's album " So " from 1986 which should have gotten album of the year, and was produced by Daniel Lanois. They stand by themselves in music.
Who is creating and writing music like this now?
Nobody. That's why we're listening to this instead of most computer pablum being produced today called " art ".

Sting's music is layered with artistic beauty. For the majority of the populace his songs are mere pop daliances, however there are those of us who appreciate his creative and articulate song writing poetry as in this song. He articulates in words what we feel but are unable to express. A true gift!

He is arguably the greatest songwriter ever. It conjures imagery, memories, emotions, and best of all, no auto tune or predictable record label decision making. I consistently shuffle between all of his albums, mainly dream of the blue turtles through brand new day.

    Such brilliant lyrics.
I remember Sting in The Bride, looking so devilishy handsome, dark and brooding...that's how I think of him when I hear songs like this or read his lyrics. It's not difficult for me to imagine him at a writing table, an oil lamp's light on his face, on the page before him on the table, while he toils over the words.
It's not the words that haunt, but it's the haunt that compels him to write.

This is my favorite Sting solo album. He reallyoutdid himself on this one. Each song tells a distinct story, all the stories are interrelated. and the end song "Brand New Day" brings us back to the beginning. "Concept" albums can be tricky but with Sting's brilliance, his expertise, his golden worlds, and his outrageous 7/8ths and 12/8s. Sting, you truly are the master and in my opinion this is the most incredible lp, You must be so proud of Coco, she's just like you!
    Love You More

I've heard this song a hundred times before today, and I've always loved its melody and lyrics. Today, however, it really wrapped itself around my heart with its beauty and intensity. I became the muse of a poet, the beloved of a wanderer of the ages. And then, just like that, the song was over, and I was left with my desk, my paperwork, and reality, having to pick up the pieces and go back to whatever my life was before. But every other song felt hollow. It was like going back into shadow after seeing the sun, or like being told "I love you" and never wanting to hear anything else...
