I was fortunate enough to be a 3DO owner from the time of launch (found a used Japanese FZ-1 for a good price and I sold my Sega Genesis and TG16 collection as well to fund the purchase).
This was revolutionary hardware when released and despite some real stinkers, there are some really good games available.

Oh man I loved my 3DO. I got a job, when I was 16 and saved all my money and bought one. This was around 97. I had almost all those games. I would include wing commander 3 to your list. Loved the dogfights and full motion video with Mark Hamill.
    Also demolition man.

    • @JLAvey

It's one of the older games that stood the test of time. Too bad they couldn't remake the game using the same script only with more modern technology.

    • @stacythomas9916

@@JLAvey they did, look into open source pc game project Urquan Masters

    • @NotRowsdower
      @NotRowsdower 2 года назад

@@JLAvey It was remade, and is available for free. The source code for SC2 was given to the open source community years ago, and at least two complete versions still exist: the amalgamated original and the HD remake.
On top of that, Star Control Origins was released a few years ago. It doesn't change much, if anything, of the original format but it's a huge love letter to SC2, and plays like such.

Road Rash... wow what a game!! I loved FIFA so much... the 3DO version was so amazing... like alien technology or something that came from the future... miles ahead of anything else at the time!! In fact, FIFA is the reason I bought the 3DO and It's still one of my favorite soccer games of all time. People bash the 3DO today.... but back in the day it was an amazing console... to me it was much more impactful and revolutionary than the PSX. The PSX was incredible, don't get me wrong, but the 3DO was way ahead of its time.

    •  4 года назад +7

Your comment is identical to my thoughts, I played FIFA on the 3DO more than I can say in words. I agree with the alien tech comment, when I first booted my 3DO and saw the FMV Batman episode, or Crash N Burn in real time, my jaw when straight to the floor, like seeing alien tech. People have no F-ing idea what it was like to see those graphics in 1993. I'm 100% sure had the 3DO been affordable, like 300 bucks instead of 700, 3DO would be THE powerhouse today. Not Sony, not Microsoft. We would be in the 7th or 8th gen of 3DO by now. Their mistake was charging too much and expecting everyone would pay so high for this alien tech graphics. In short, the 3DO was downright amazing in 93 and absolutely revolutionary. People have no idea how impressive it was in the early 90s.

3DO was the first time we saw some of the great 16bits franchises jump to 3d, even if it was sprite based. That console was on a league of its own and remembers me of a strange gone era were EA was the cool company

We ran a pool hall / arcade when I was younger and we had all the systems hooked up to big screens to rent out for $5/hour. The 3DO was ALWAYS rented out. The Playstation, Saturn, and Jaguar were on the same TV because they weren't rented nearly as much. 3DO was non stop rented. I absolutely loved that system, then when the M2 was announced, I was excited... then Trip liquidated everything. The gaming industry owes a ton to the 3DO.

I had the Goldstar 3DO console back in 1996 when the price came down to where I was willing. The games were better than the Genesis at least. Shockwave and Megarace were two games included. Sports and gameshow games were my favorites....so FIFA, Madden, PGA Tour, Foes of Ali, Slam N Jam, Zhadnost, Twisted, and Family Feud were others I owned. Unforgettable hours of fun. Ahh the 90's.

3DO was an awesome company, hired local teens for data processing, I had a few of these, the developer console, and an unreleased successor that had flash drive capabilities and one running game, Street Fighter 2. They were literally just dumping everything in the trash out back.and my friend took what he could fit in his small hatchback.

I remember my friend getting a 3DO, we had a blast with it; however we moved on to other games & systems, for a brief moment it was a holy grail of systems, just never took out, seems like they could have partnered with someone and improve on it for a next generation, ultimately it just faded into obscurity!

Shockwave 2 was an amazing game, even better than the original. I also loved Immercenary. It was a weird game with cheezy FMV acting but it was sort of an early open-world game. The premise was sort of Matrix-like except that everyone knew they were trapped in a virtual world. The only way out was to die in battle which also meant dying IRL.

I love the 3do game Star Fighter. It is so much better done than the Saturn or Ps1 versions of the game. The proof is when you fly up into the sky, everything shrinks and you even see the curvature of the planet you are on. What does the Saturn and PlayStation version do? Fog. Lots of damn fog. Has probably the best 3d of any 3do game I’ve ever played.

There are some great games here. I think the price tag for the system was what doomed it. At the time games like Super Street Fighter II Turbo and the most accurate version of Samurai Shodown not on the Neo Geo would have been system sellers. But that's not worth $700. The Jaguar launched at $250. That price point with these games would probably have gone somewhere.

A big one is Wolfenstein 3D on the 3DO - aka. the best console port of Wolf3D. Hi-res textures, CD-quality soundtrack, vastly improved sound effects and it combines the SNES/Jaguar shortened campaign with the original full-length PC campaign for a total of 90 levels. In some ways it's better than the PC version, and that's saying a lot for a retro FPS.

The occult themes fascinated me as a kid and reading the game's books for clues was a joy. It's one of the few games I can think of where reading texts was a draw and not just a means to an end. When I look at the 3DO it holds up so well compared to other consoles of this period. I still think games like need for speed and road rash look great. It doesn't have the technical abilities of the saturn or playstation but developers during this period combined fmv, digitized sprites and polygons in a way that gave the games personality. It's like an interactive b-movie video store. It's one of my favorite consoles.

The absolute best 3do game is Return Fire - still a great multiplayer game to this day.

For over 15 years now I have really enjoyed the heck out of the Iron Angel (Tetsujin) games. One day I might just finish one without cheating.

Loves Iron Angel I and II have them both. I finished 1 no problem, 2 was harder but did eventually finish both of them without cheating, good luck.

My local game store had playable 3D0 and Jaguar displays, side by side. They really did feel like the future had arrived.

Nice to see the 3DO get some love, too many people write it off as a bad console. One of my favorite games on the 3DO is Escape from Monster Manor. Think somewhere along the lines of Doom meets Disney's Haunted Mansion with only one usable weapon. It's not as cool or action packed as Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, but it oozes character with it's Halloween/Horror-themed design and becomes very charming as a result. I especially like Gothic, Horror and Halloween types of games so I was particularly attracted to this title. I also like Phoenix 3, it's a half quirky little platforming run n' gun and half simplified wing commander-style space shooter. The platforming parts can be hit or miss, but the space combat is top notch for its time.

I still remember reading my old gaming magazines and being blown away too by the screenshots, I still have them stored. But sadly I never did play or own it.
The game you are thinking of is 'Escape From Monster Manor' mate

This is a great list. The only great game missing is PO’ed which was tremendous fun back in the day. And Starfighter (I think that was the name).

I got my FZ-1 in 1996. I was absolutely smitten with Road Rash and Need for Speed! (Although Gex was pretty damn cool, too....) I eventually fell out of love with this system and listened to the magazines tell me it was archaic junk, and gave all my time to the PS and Saturn and N64, but this system will always have a soft spot in my heart. I wish I never got rid of it. Shame Shame.

Not sure if you know or not but Star Control 2 has been updated due to becoming open source. Check out pc game project "The Urquan Masters" :) It is SC2, updated to run on modern equipment and has been converted by fans to have full voice acting, HD graphics, and multiplayer online super melee. Best of all it is free.
