  • In this video, we derive the elemental stiffness matrix for a beam element including the associated shape functions and the finite element equation. A beam is a long slender structural member generally subjected to transverse loading that produces significant bending as opposed to twisting and axial effects. The bending deformation is measured as a transverse displacement and rotation i.e. two degrees of freedom per node. The stiffness matrix for a member is used to express the forces at the ends of the member as functions of the displacements of the member’s ends.
